I'm too much of romantic too to believe this to be the case, in fact I refuse to believe it! We exist because of love and that is why our species will live on too.

Oxytocin does play a key role in bonding but the biology doesn't mean the experience is fake.

We may not be our thoughts, but we are ourselves, we think and we act on those thoughts. It's all real in the end.

Until we die and wake into the larger reality.

What an incredibly sad vantage. And this from a man who calls himself a Catholic and even tried to get me to adopt Catholicism again a while ago.

Never fear, I would never impose my truth (which at least in this case happens to be the real truth) on another human being. I'm single and celibate remember. Facts is facts and I calls 'em like I seez 'em.

You have indeed already made the statement before here at the forum that you possess the absolute truth. And apart from still being wrong in your assessment, that makes it even sadder.

Romantic love can be true and unconditional love. It just focuses that love on a single individual with whom one has a very intimate Yin/Yang connection.

ok you don't get it...I embarrassed you and I apologize...I was just kidding Palooka... I always concede one a-hole move and that was yours. And I'm sure you feel it was justified but as I said it was just an offhand joke. We can proceed peacefully from here or we can have open warfare...it's your choice.

Just a small remark here. Romantic love is a reflection of divine love. It is a smaller, less perfect version, but it nevertheless reflects that infinite, universal love in a dualistic version of the larger whole. That spiritual hunger and unfulfillable desire and attraction that lovers feel for each other is not only a function of hormones and electrical signals in the brain, but an elemental longing to be together again. When we were created, we necessarily had to separate ourselves from the creator and everyone else, to become manifest. When we reunite our opposing polarities with another person, we become whole again and this happens on many levels, from the physical, to the spiritual and in some cases all the way to the divine. Under ideal conditions, one person becomes God, the other Goddess and their reunification shakes the world. This is also the central philosophy of Tantra.

Nice...now I'll have to reconsider my cynicism...it is pretty deeply embedded within my psyche though. In my Catholic indoctrination among celibate nuns and priests not to mention that my adoptive mother died when I was 5 years old and through most of my formative years there was no such conceptual object as 'romantic' love in my family home I will at least think about it.

That is a very deep and knowledgeable insight into the 'potential' meaning of such love. Science is much more pragmatic in its description. I think that is why people have been attacking you Chris, you are a good soul and it is patently obvious.

i can dig that. but, at the same time, i can't overlook this either... If everything is a reflection of whatever is going on on the deeper layers of the cake and all roads lead back to the godhead then what does this reflection that is clearly a massive reflection of sex outside of love by the manifested spirits, tell us about what went down in the godhead?

    amen!
If you have ever seen a Hindu or Jain temple wall with what is basically a depiction of various orgiastic sexual positions, you will appreciate that sexuality without love is not outside the divine order of things. Sacred prostitution is still practised today in a religious context. I don't really want to bring Inanna into this, due to my past history with her, but her cult had a very definite sexual element, which also included sacred prostitution and homosexual and transgender priests. In cultures based on non-monotheistic religions, sexuality is seen as a completely normal human need that can be satisfied without too much guilt associated with it. This is particularly true in the various tantric traditions I wrote about here, where sexuality is seen as a divine act, the reunification of God and Goddess.

It should also be noted that Romantic Love is a western concept and a pretty naive one at that. It was really a product of 19th century Romantic Literature and has not been common practice in other cultures or even our own, before that time. In Asia for instance, Romantic Love is seen as tragic, it always ends badly for both parties. Marriages are generally arranged and are based on many things, but mutual attraction by the couple isn't one of them. They generally only meet on their wedding day, or if they're lucky, they may see their spouse-to-be just before the wedding on a brief visit.

That is not exactly correct. There are countless ancient tales of romantic love — often with a tragic twist to them, this is true, but then again, most ancient tales have tragic twists to them, regardless of whom or what they are about — all the way from Asia and Africa, and via the Middle East up into the West.
