The altitude is quite different for the newer military jets, quite higher.. Temperatures are much colder higher up, the condensing ability of water vapor in jet exhaust is greater, more obvious at higher altitudes. A contrail is not a chemtrail.
LOW altitude Spraying happens. That and particulate emission from tires being worn down, and vehicle emission at LOW altitudes.
50-60,000 foot flight altitudes preclude surface exposure. The water vapor never reaches down here (* see note )
Volcanic dust emission which rises to about 100,000 feet is the closest analogy to determine particle movement at altitude - (link)
Looking at the graphic below, pay attention to the light being blocked by CONTRAILS, it is minimal.. The blockers are different. Coming from combustion gases. Volcanic particle emission of microfine ash creates nucleation sites (nucleation sites are what allows clouds to form from smaller particles, the particles build, a perfectly normal natural process)..

Military jets travel into high altitudes, their exhaust emission remains the same, if anything they are more efficient and have MORE water output than CO2.. (to answer ur observation on questioning your b-in-law's engineering observation. If he is not aware of emission reduction in modern jet engines, he would have not tracked how changes improved CO2 reduction and INCREASED water emission - water emission leads to increased nucleation and combining with volcanic dust, becomes visible.. Some days the particulate content is greater, the sky is "yellower, darker" as noted in the graphic)..
*Note: Some anvil clouds from thunderstorms can have cloud-tops up in the 60,000 foot altitude range. If there is a strong thunderstorm at the same time as high altitude contrails, and volcanic ash at the same time, those particle (acid rain or sulfur dioxide SO2) plus the ash particles, plus the CO2 probably as carbonic acid, plus nitrogen dioxide from lightning and the nitrogen plus oxygen in the air coming down with the rain and most likely hail. Anyone with a chemical analyzer such as a FTIR or mass spectrograph COULD very well and easily analyse such a sample of the rainwater and/or hail for the alleged trace chemicals purported to be in "chemtrails".. that will cinch completely this argument of chemtrails.. It's a no brainer to do that analysis and report the results. BTW, I have never seen contrails AND a high altitude thunderstorm at the same time.. I suppose that means that for the "alleged stuff" to reach the earth, the high altitude thunderstorms would have to form then right after the period of contrail activity. Any legitimate researcher with the equipment could do such.. Storm chaser networks exist all over.. AND that one could get samples and ship to a researcher willing to do the analysis.
