    GEM (Gnosticism, Esotericism, Mysticism)

    http://kripal.rice.edu/gem.html

Most of my graduate teaching takes place now in a new program the Department of Religious Studies recently launched. We call it the GEM Program, for its special focus on gnosticism, esotericism, and mysticism. Although there are three similar programs or focuses in Europe (at the Sorbonne, the University of Amsterdam, and the University of Exeter), this is the first and only of its kind here in the U.S. What follows is our official description.

Traditional understandings of religion often focus on events, figures, and ideas that are more or less amenable to orthodox framings of what constitutes religious truth and practice. But what if we do not privilege these public “winning” voices, but look also at those heterodox or esoteric currents of the history of religions that have been actively repressed, censored, or simply forgotten by their respective cultures? What if, moreover, we privilege the psychology and phenomenology of religious experience over the authorial framing of these events by the faith traditions, even as we explore and analyze the profound ways the faith traditions shape these same “individual” experiences?

The comparative categories of gnosticism, esotericism, and mysticism are all modern constructs, each different in nuance, but all designed to ask just these sorts of dialectical questions, to relate orthodoxy to heterodoxy, and vice versa. This area of concentration in the Ph.D. program at Rice University provides students the opportunity to study the varieties and commonalities of gnosticism, esotericism, and mysticism as these phenomena are both shaped within and marshaled outside (or even against) discrete religious traditions. The Department’s approach to the study of gnosticism, esotericism, and mysticism is grounded in the rigorous study of single traditions, to the extent that it demands distinct philological and historical training in particular cultural areas. It is also explicitly comparative, to the extent that it draws on multiple traditions—from Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, to Hinduism, Buddhism, and the New Age—for its comprehensive materials and theorizing.

The goal of the program is to train students to work independently on traditions of their choice and, eventually, to become professors and scholars in the study of religion. To do so, students will (1) become familiar with the histories and nuances of the comparative categories of gnosticism, esotericism, and mysticism in the discipline; (2) gain linguistic proficiency in relevant languages; (3) study primary materials, including texts and practices; and (4) become conversant in the history and material culture of their chosen traditions. The result is a unique community of scholars and graduate colleagues actively engaged in the historical-critical, psychological, philosophical, aesthetic, ritual, somatic, contemplative, and phenomenological exploration of some of the most intense, unusual, and interesting religious phenomena known to scholars of religion.

Finally - someone/somewhere in the US that they might finally "get it"

What the witting (and unwitting) fakes will NEVER DO -

    from my blog -

    http://merlynagain.blogspot.com/2016...akes-will.html

I have come to study several of the recent crop of AMES (Alternative Media Experiencer Stars). In one case I had gotten quite close with one of these stars known as the Ruiner and now “out of the shadows” he goes by his (likely real) name of Shane. So to make my point, I feel it is best to refer specifically to the following experience I had with Shane regarding “polygraph.”

I once suggested to Shane the idea of taking a polygraph... if I recall correctly I was not necessarily suggesting he take one. I think I was speaking of Corey or perhaps any AMES at that time. Shane’s response was something like... "well, polygraphs can be wrong" or "polygraphs can be faked"... suggesting then that what good would one be? He essentially blocked any openness to doing one himself which is now what I am calling him to do. He won't, and you can take that to the bank.

Now let's look at this - If someone is telling the truth, why would they fake that they are lying? They wouldn't. So in the cases of these AMES who report both publicly and what they share “privately”... full blown fantastical and truly all but impossible to believe detailed stories, the only possible results are that the polygraph would be right or wrong but certainly a truth teller is not going to intentionally fake out a polygraph to suggest they are lying. This one is ruled out.

The Ruiner blog and Shane’s public interviews were filled with many details which can be polygraphed. But those examples represent a small percentage of the total number of detailed fantastical experiences and claims that Shane shared with me privately and with others who became what I have come to call Shaneolytes and a great deal more of these fantastical experiences and claims to the the inner circle of Shaneolytes of which I was a part for several months.

Shane told me (or typed to me) dozens of detailed fantastical experiences... and did so to the level of detail that depending on the experience there could be several direct questions which would be able to receive a clear "yes" or "no" answer if polygraphed by a professional and in most cases there could be more than a dozen for each experience. In essence there could be hundreds if not thousands of questions which a simple "yes" or "no" answer would either be correct (the truth)... or not. Perhaps the polygraph technician might incorrectly interpret as truth or lie in some cases (meaning a response that suggests he may be lying when it is the truth or a response that he is being truthful when he is actually not). But the vast majority or readings from polygraphing hundreds of details would clearly demonstrate the overall fact that the story teller is generally truthful or generally lying.

Of course, a test of all drugs which are known to assist someone in fooling a polygraph would be needed as well.

So why is this important? Because many of us who have had anomalous experiences or who are at least open minded that some folks do actually have these experiences often seek better understandings with regards to what they have experienced. Frauds, fakes, attention seekers, mythomaniacs, narcististic megalomaniacs and sociopaths who take the route of "the fake" perform a serious disservice to these folks.

In the case of some of these AMES they either state directly or at least greatly imply that the reasons they come forward are to be helpful to humanity or at least a group within humanity (such as an "intended audience"). Yet if what they are doing is to knowingly lie or to knowingly but significantly embellish even one detail of one element of a fantastical story, then (IMO) this is terribly sad for all of us.

And I have not even brought up what is far worse than the lying... which is the interpretation these folks then suggest. And then I haven't even brought up the damage they do to others who now see them as some wise being whose ideology should be listened to such that the suggestions of their ideologies could actually be helpful to humanity and in fact to all life. If the stage has been obtained via the route of getting the attention of the vulnerable via lies should anyone expose themselves to what may effect their world view emanating from the fake?

In cases where an individual actually believes every single detail they have reported then it still would likely be revealed in the polygraph that there’s something seriously fishy going on because the subconscious knows the truth. To me, like in the case of the individual I will point to at the end of this post, don't they owe it to us all to find out for themselves if what they "think" they are experiencing is actually real? meaning real to the very same level of reality they share which is the very same level of reality I am pointing to at this moment.... that I am typing on a black Logitech keyboard.

Real Experiencers do not need to lie. Authentic individuals do not need to embellish or take a small truth and spin it into a massive tale filled with mostly lies. Those who are coming forward with their real and truth filled stories do not do so to seek attention or play twisted games... they are much more likely stimulated to share their experience because they wish that folks would either stop living in their locked down 5 sense, materialistic world view which most of humanity has become cemented into or where in the cases of openness to the anomalous they have settled for a "belief" in an equally false usually religious paradigmic explanation developed all and only so they can cope with what they can't otherwise explain.

Here is an example of an experiencer (yes, an AMES) who emerged as one of the most prolific and eventually one of the most greatly appreciate experiencers... appreciated by the reasonably grounded while simultaneously open minded - ever to come forward. Fortunately, he has been gifted with the ability to write which has played a hugely significant role in his ability to share about his actual, truly anomalous (and fantastical yet greatly supported by witnesses) experiences yet where he has also reflected upon these experiences in a most grounded way. Where this man asks questions, the fakes tell you the answers and in many cases tell you what these answers should mean to you. This is the deepest clue to what really drives them. Odds of Shane taking a polygraph? Pretty infinitesimal.

I visited your blog and watched the Bill Hicks video. I watched and enjoyed the others you've posted and commented on the love or fear choice. I understand much better now where he and you are coming from.

I enjoyed listening to Whitley recently interviewed by Jimmy Church on Fade to Black.

Same for Corey... and Simon... and a long list of the same.

Some people understand how hugely important the precise truth is when it comes to matters such as this. They almost always also understand how hugely important it is NOT to interpret in such a way their interpretation comes across as "definitive fact" but more along the lines of nothing but speculation... where it is open ended... where the listener could also explore their own wonderment.

    Anyways...

On one hand, there is exploration.

    On the other - exploitation.

    and as synchronicity goes...

Note that the professor I noted in the OP, Jeffrey J. Kripal, happened to co-author a book with Whitley Strieber called The Super Natural which was recommended to me by a TOT member recently. Well, I bought the book and took it with me to Costa Rica last week where I knocked out half of it in a few days.

Simply a wonderful, cutting edge set of views of the unexplained!

The reason the title is two words, super and natural is because they view this phenomena as natural and why the word "super" is all and only because we have yet to be able to properly (and perhaps scientifically) explain it (if it ever can be).

Keep in mind that I have been seeking a source for the best milk possible (I love milk!). So yesterday I went to run an errand far from home. I suddenly realized I was just about to pass a natural grocery store that was the only one around that carried my favorite mayonnaise. As I walked towards that section I saw a young man that worked there unpacking milk and so I asked him if if they carried raw milk. He pointed to a container and said, "This is the closest thing we have to it."

Not only will people like Corey Goode or Shane not take a professionally-administered polygraph test, but they wouldn't stand up to interviews with people critical of their stories either. Their fake personas are fragile and they only allow themselves to be approached by friends and people who won't make them have to think too hard. They wouldn't want to be tripped up or asked to explain nonsense that they've said in the past. They've made up all of these ridiculous stories but aren't smart enough to think on their feet when somebody starts really digging into those stories and asking obvious questions.

If you guys ever find a whistleblower with a crazy story who stands up to a skeptical interview, I'd like to see that. If you witness crazy stuff personally then how can anyone disprove that? If you're going to go public with it at all then you shouldn't be afraid of defending your experiences from people who are skeptical. Only people who make up a lot of nonsense are afraid of getting tripped up by it.

What's worse is when the infection spreads to an innocent vulnerable one.

Recently I was sad to learn that the great C. W. Chanter, the very one who made the all important difference in my own life via stimulation of my gut as to the the truth regarding...

Hey - hear it for yourself - sadly C. W. Chanter has been Shanetized!!!

Organized chantings will be conducted every Tuesday and Thursday at 7 PM and on Sundays at 1:30 PM in the loft above Wllie's (our favorite local pub) until C. W. has shed the spell.

Currently the odds are 2 to 1 that this will take 3 months or more and you know where you can get down.

Haven't listened to any of these. Did the smooth talker reel the chanter in?

I already love 'em both... always will.

Its just individuals exploring their own subjective realities within this strange collective reality where some end up perceiving objects within it as examples that there is at least an aspect to the "all" which could be labeled objective.

    Such as

The Earth is round not flat!

"we are right! Darn it!!!" or such as...

"There is a God!" or such as

    "There is no God"

(both of the last two assume that if there is or is not that that "God" is external and separate)

    or... "This is REAL man!!!"

or - "This is a holographically generated simulation which injected a large number of individuated expressions of consciousness."

and on and on and on where even when there's an agreement on one specific thing such as what can be found from past record or what might come forth in the future even when what is agreed upon also could be seen to contradict!

I am of the camp where all those possibilities can be true or not simultaneously.

The only issue I have with anyone (including myself) is when they consciously deceive, wittingly deceive, willfully deceive in any way or fashion either others and/or themselves. For me, this is lesson number one.

With regards to ANY matter that is discussed which reaches beyond the material reality in any way it is my firmest opinion (as if any opinion I might have even matters) that when anything like this is discussed, that there is absolutely NO conscious lying and this includes any conscious embellishment too - if I see a green man that is tall and I know that tall green man is say, no more than 10 or so feet tall, I better say that as opposed to saying "he may have been as tall as 15 to 20 feet!"

Details and precision of those details matter when we share strange, fantastical and anomalous experiences.

Thanks, Sam. I'm with you on the active deception and I'd add to that having a problem with willful ignorance. No excuse for it, imo.

A Chanter and a Ruiner together could cause some mischief...if they're allowed.

I really like the way you expressed this continuing dilemma and that reportage of our own subjectives needs strict adherence to non-embellishment or trying to justify for the sake of "whatever" excuse we generate.

The issue of the characters like Shane etc. who seek our attention is that the only reason they reach out is so they WILL have our attention. And actually unless one is needing what THEY seem to offer, we can all just plod along neutrally.

What I read in your discussion is that you needed some validation for anomalous experience and believed from what he dangled that he "knew" what you did not know. So, he gave you some more information and more information (all the time building on your responses). I don't think your disappointment needs to be extended now you realize all he wanted was to have your attention.

So, the hard question: do you miss/ want him in a bromancey way? That pain needs processing like any heart break of human "love lost". Narcissists don't "love" us and that hurts. IMO ANY of these claiming they are ready to reveal esoteric wisdom to us noobs, grant us their (g)knowledge, save us as they are special "guru" types are whistling blowers. IMO they are seeking narcissitic supply. I read this quote on another forum about a different female "guru" and it is pertinent.

    From: Lili14d 1
    To: Deadlights:
In my mind, narcissism is more about not being able to meet your needs properly, than it is about wanting celebrity.
Very well said - they don't know how too meet their needs properly but their needs are also dictated by their fake self not by their true self, whos needs never get met.
Narcissist do not want fame and succes for the sake of it. They need it as a source of their narcissistic supply to maintain their fake self. There is no better way to gain people's approval, admiration and interest then to become a celebrity. And being famous is a perfect means to treat the world as an extension of yourself.
There are also narcissist who are less chaotic and have higher levels of co-operation and people skills. They on other hand are drawn to being a guru, therapist, judge, politician. Some are known for their charity but their giving has more to do with exercising their power then "wanting to help" and in more pathological cases it can even take a sadistic form.

If you look carefully at the guru - followers dynamics, there is literally no other occupation that would satisfy narcissistic supply as much as being "enlightened master ".http://www.tealtribe.com/t/is-teal-a...ssist/15341/40
It is really easy these days to make youtube videos. The ones of rambling conversations where the makers want us to listen to them for hours have little substance if any. That is why editing is really valuable. They are from "personalities" who have sought recognition and we give our time and "views" by listening and tyhis is in itself a "tell" IMO.

What have we gained from these hours spent on "persons of interest?" really?? The personality cults need to be retired as they become repetitive dramedies. It is such a yawn...the alt youtube culture is reaching its nadir of shlocking lack of relevance. Sorry guys...you are BORING.

So, in addition to what you have expounded, I say: this is what continuing the waking up feels like.....

Honestly, I made it to about 39 minutes in... I hoped that C. W. would share some of the views he shared with me in regards to Shane the Ruiner but I just didn't have the patience to listen to ever find out.

This is exactly what happened. Now that I have extracted myself emotionally from the strange experience I had for those 14 or so months I have been able to consider the factors that were integral to the impact Shane and our first few conversations had on me. So the question is... what the heck was that all about? Fortunately and to a large extent because I have indeed moved well beyond the lower emotional "pulling down" I experienced, combined with the uncanny and incredible relationships I am now enjoying, I am indeed getting my wish and getting answers to "what the heck the heck was that all about."

There is the age old saying... "When the student is ready, the teacher appears." With regards to those 14 months I was ripe and ready and indeed the teachers did appear, Shane being one of the greatest and for which I am ever grateful. And this is how, in my heart space, I look at it all.

Yet their was a sad price to pay and that price was in the form of relationships which did not need to be destroyed. I feel that I have some responsibility in all this. Yet also, I am not alone in having that responsibility. It is my opinion that if Shane came clean, that would be taking at least his part of the responsibility. Likely, only by his doing that could the relationships have some hope for repair. I am not holding my breath.

Yes... the same as I miss my first wife! I will leave interpretation up to the reader here.

wow - a recent chat suggests this very dynamic.

At least I was able to look in my own mirror to see what might apply to myself. I like the place I am at and I have no problems with any of my recent activities, statements, posts on forums or my blog as well as comments made on other media. I like knowing I'm still growing.

That I made it 39 minutes in did indeed tell me something. I still have a wee bit of emotional chording. Note, I was accused of being obsessed by the way. I find that amusing as if anyone is obsessed, it would come from the zone of the ruined. The magic that has returned to my own life confirms that my steady processing of what I went through is producing positive results.

    Thanks, Maggie... Sam

    Hillarious... Whistling Blowers! hahaha wow
