At the Southern Baptist Annual Convention:

Pence spent more time praising the great stature and works of his political born again God, Donald Trump, than he did praising the life and works of Jesus Christ.

Which went over about as well as an ex spouse at a wedding. Evangelical reaction was swift and brutal. Evangelicals took to social media and twitter, blasting Pence for hijacking their meeting for his own crass political purposes. The outcry was so great that the leaders said that they will entertain a motion in their next session to stop inviting political figures to speak at future annual meetings. Apparently, there is a limit to even Christian charity, and Trump and pence have tapped out that wallet.
This time, it's not just liberal heads that are exploding, GOP heads are turning cherry red, with steam spouting out of their ears as well. For once, almost nobody is buying Trump's bullshit about blaming those stupid, liberal Democrats. It was time for drastic action.

It was time to appeal directly to evangelicals, in the language they could most easily understand. Namely, the bible. This was not in Trump's wheelhouse, since he once famously referred to the body and blood of Jesus Christ as having "his sip of wine, and his little cracker."
Sessions came out and defended the policy in a speech, referencing the Letter of Paul to the Romans, about bowing to the authority of government, without mentioning the part in the letter that dealt with displeasure over immoral or unjust laws. This didn't go over well. The problem is that Paul's letter that Sessions quoted has also been used to justify slavery in this country, as well as by authoritarian figures in other countries, to justify submission of religion to the government.
    It turns out that many religious leaders and pastors actually prefer Matthew 25:40 for guidance in this issue, but it doesn't quite fit Trump or Sessions criteria;

"Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me"
Trump recently rammed through a change that abolishes the restriction on the clergy from making political statements from behind the pulpit.

Seriously? That was the Republican's baby. That's how they politicized religion in the Gingrich years. Wow.

Pastors all over the country are already speaking out publicly against this policy.

Pastors will begin to speak out from behind the pulpit as well. And their flocks will listen.

    Thumbs Down

It seems like there's no end to The Donald™'s madness. Now he wants to create a separate military space force.

Yeah, being the greatest political bully of Earth wasn't enough yet. Now they're going to bring that imperialist shit into space. Just what the universe needed.

Steve Schmidt is making it official:

Republican strategist Steve Schmidt — who convinced John McCain to appoint Sarah Palin as his running mate — renounced his membership in the Republican Party over the continuing abuses of President Donald Trump.

29 years and nine months ago I registered to vote and became a member of The Republican Party which was founded in 1854 to oppose slavery and stand for the dignity of human life. Today I renounce my membership in the Republican Party. It is fully the party of Trump.
It is corrupt, indecent and immoral. With the exception of a few Governors like Baker, Hogan and Kasich it is filled with feckless cowards who disgrace and dishonor the legacies of the party’s greatest leaders.
“This child separation policy is connected to the worst abuses of Humanity in our history,” Schmidt said. “It is connected by the same evil that separated families during slavery and dislocated tribes and broke up Native American families. It is immoral and must be repudiated. Our country is in trouble. Our politics are badly broken.
On Ronald Reagan’s grave are these words. “ I know in my heart that man is good. That what is right will always eventually triumph and there is purpose and worth to each and every life.” He would be ashamed of McConnell and Ryan and all the rest while this corrupt government
Establishes internment camps for babies. Everyone of these complicit leaders will carry this shame through history. There legacies will be ones of well earned ignominy. They have disgraced their country and brought dishonor to the Party of Lincoln.
“The first step to a season of renewal in our land is the absolute and utter repudiation of Trump and his vile enablers in the 2018 election by electing Democratic majorities,” he added. “I do not say this as an advocate of a progressive agenda. I say it as someone who retains belief in DEMOCRACY and decency.”
I'd just like to point out that Hogan governs my state. Even my husband thinks he's a decent guy and will vote for him.

My husband knows when politicians have a heart or not because they are responsible for the funding that supports the disabled people my husband works with.

Appears Trump is breaking or smashing the one party system, very fast.

He's breaking all kinds of things. But what he wants is a one-party system. Republicans have been talking about it for decades.

It's called "Permanent Republican Majority". It's why they've been stacking the Supreme Court - Citizens United is the case that made money speech and stacked things way towards the rich - gerrymandering, striking down parts of the Voting Rights Act, etc. It goes back to Karl Rove.

    Remember Bush's Brain?

You have to take rights away from most of the people, which is happening, and then you get your one party permanent majority.

    That's their plan anyway.

I don't think it will work for one simple reason.

The Republicans have always relied on lower and lower voter turnouts. That's why they doubled and tripled down on negative campaigns.

They also rely on suppressing the vote as much as possible. This includes throwing away registrations and all kinds of disenfranchisement.

The massive voter wave that's forming now will overcome all of that because raw numbers will trump trying to fix the system.

Raw numbers of voters will overcome all the obstacles Republicans have put in the way. They're very much afraid of this already.

So expect Trump to start screaming about unfair and rigged elections, the same one's he 'smartly' used to win.

It's the last desperate gasp he and his party will have.

After that comes the "march on Washington" and "civil war". Because some sore losers are very very dangerous.

    "He's really good at winning."

Very True. And up until now, Trump has always stayed in the arena where he knows he has the mad skills. This is the first time Trump has had to play in an arena like this. And there is no arena like this. The closest thing we have is Governor. Which is why most presidents had been Governors. They had experience.

The Trump organization is not run like the US government or any other government. Not even close. His skills at winning are showing and they involve a lot of bullying. (and probably money laundering)

He can't succeed long-term that way in the Executive Branch.

There aren't enough Americans to support that.

As an example, of all the groups surveyed recently, and there were many, only one group supported the family separation policy. The Republicans. No other group did. Teachers, Doctors, Miners, Lawyers, you name it.

    Only one group.

They are not the One Ring. They do not rule us all.
