I haven't forgotten Colin Powell and his statements about WMD. I lost a lot of regard for him that day. And I haven't forgotten how he kept repeating the words, "I serve at the pleasure of the President." Again and again. What was that? It was obvious to me that Bush was gunning for Iraq long before they came up w/the WMD story.

This hacking/advertising on social media/undermining democracy thing has been going on a lot longer than Trump's presidency. Russia has every reason to do it. It serves them well to have upheaval here. Division and lack of faith in our government is a huge boon for them. They use it in any way they can. Why wouldn't they?

People have patterns of behavior. Trump did a lot of business with mobsters, first of the Italian kind, then of the Russian.

Trump keeps talking about collusion because that's a distraction. The crimes would be money laundering, tax evasion, and possibly obstruction of justice. That one's harder because intent must be demonstrated.

I figured out that something was very wrong when they kicked off the Iraq war with the wrong mech division on the ground and the AF out of precision guided weapons because we’d shot most of them up in the Kosovo war (remember that?). I knew from my NATO work that the we were ill prepared, so what, the f**k, was the hurry? Then I’d heard from Wesley Clark (I had worked for him in NATO when he was SACEUR) that seven Muslim countries were being targeted at the start of the W administration. This was the clue that something was very wrong with American foreign policy.

Yeah. They had a whole plan to topple a bunch of countries in the Middle East.

Sam here is an example of a man who got caught up in the sexual abuse wave and lost his job. But then he made his case and got his job back.

He speaks with James Risen who wrote State of War among others. The book covers the Bush Administration and the CIA. Sam and James talk about the Bush era and also Obama. They talk a good bit about how harsh Obama and Holder were with whistleblowers. There is a law now, because of them, in VA and DC that says that reporters cannot protect their sources. It's still in effect. How effing outrageous is that?

This is long. You can skip the intro news section if you so desire.

The thing that really caught my ear was a conversation with Condaleeza Rice where she told Risen to go home, burns notes and never speak of the topic at hand again. He didn't, of course. She had no authority to demand that. But then authority is given by consent quite often, isn't it? He hones in on the fact that most of the secrecy that protects 'national security' is to cover up screw-ups. That was the case in the conversation with Secretary Rice.

Covering up mistakes was, in fact, the foundational case law for secrecy. I wish I had the citation. The case was sealed and the family was never allowed to find out what happened to their son. A reporter unconnected to them got the case through FOIA, called the family and asked how they felt about what happened to their son.

It was the first time they ever heard anything. They had to learn from a reporter who used the Freedom of Information Act.

I originally listened to a segment of video which I can't find right now, so I'll try to mark where they discuss different subjects as I listen here.

I have a family member who runs a security firm. He knows about clearance and classified information. He was recently talking about how intelligence is still stovepiped. This has not been remedied.

The various intelligence agencies have not gotten together to all tell the same, supposedly politically motivated, lie about Russians hacking the DNC. That's a distraction, imo.

Trump learned of the idea of an inside job from his numero uno info source, Fox News. There seem to be a lot of people tracking how Trump tweets about things shortly after they're reported on Fox.

So many memos, so little time...

This past summer, as the Mueller investigation was heating up, Binney co-authored a memo, published by members of a group of former intelligence officials called Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS), making the case that the DNC emails were not hacked by Russia, but stolen by an insider.
“Key among the findings of the independent forensic investigations is the conclusion that the DNC data was copied onto a storage device at a speed that far exceeds an Internet capability for a remote hack.”
The memo garnered attention on the right, but its claims have been disputed.
Drake, who for so long had been closely associated with Binney, publicly opposed the memo, joining a group of dissenting VIPS members who have attacked it.
Drake and the dissenters complain that the original memo was deeply flawed and came to biased conclusions based only on a sketchy analysis of information that originated with Guccifer 2.0, which the U.S. intelligence community believes is a front for Russian intelligence. The dissenters also point out that it is indeed possible for a remote internet transfer to occur at the speeds identified in Binney’s memo
The controversy surrounding the July VIPS memo didn’t seem to deter Pompeo from meeting with Binney.
Binney said he was not told what the meeting was about until he sat down with Pompeo. He said that in addition to Pompeo, two other CIA staffers, who gave only their first names, attended the meeting and asked technical questions about Binney’s analysis. When Pompeo asked Binney what evidence he had to support his analysis of the DNC email theft, Binney says he told him that it was based only on the online analyses of information published by Guccifer 2.0.

Binney said that since their meeting, he has not heard from Pompeo about scheduling follow-up meetings with the NSA and FBI.

I posted this article on the "Robert Mueller interviewed at least one Facebook employee for Russia probe: report" thread but I thought it's relevant here too. Aragorn, feel free to delete one if you think double posting is too much, cheers.

You mean "like anybody" politically? That would be a fair assessment as he holds many anarchist values.

ok, I won't argue...I don't suppose his biases are any worse than anyone else's on this fair Earth.

I heard that "at the pleasure of the President" phrase again the other day. It's related to the "Unitary Executive" idea pushed by Bush/Cheney where the White House is in charge rather than part of co-equal branches.

It also sounds very regal. As in "At Her Majesty's leisure [...]."

That's why I was so bothered every time I heard him say it. Plus it felt like a statement that had a lot more meaning than just the words. Like sending some kind of message.

Who do you think the Trumpet really is? Ed Chiarini says he is Ron Masak the actor.
