A farmer noticed the entrance to a cave - what he found amazes the world

The Sơn Đoòng cave in Vietnam is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular places we can visit on the planet. It was first discovered by a local farmer in 1991, but it took 18 years before scientists were able to make their way into the cave and see what was hiding there.

What a sight it must have been!

The Sơn Đoòng cave is not only the world's largest cave, it is a separate little world. Under the roof there is enough space to fit a 40 storey skyscraper. It has its own separate jungle, a river and a rich wildlife. The cave is five times larger than Phong Nha cave, a nearby cave previously considered the biggest cave in Vietnam.

Sơn Đoòng means "Mountain river cave" and the researchers estimate that the cave is about five million years old. The largest room in the Sơn Đoòng cave is more than five kilometers long and stretches 200 meters into the air. With these dimensions, Sơn Đoòng overtook Deer Cave in Malaysia in 2009 to take the title of the world's largest cave.

In 2013 the first guided tour was arranged to Son Doong. The price was rigid - $3,000 for five nights in tents. But then you would have a nature experience that very few people ever had.

Yeh, It's an amazing cave system. I live in Vietnam and did the Phong Nha cave tour... staying at the Phong Nha Farmstay where the tour started from. Well worth the visit if you are ever over here.

We stopped there in 2013 when my son and I did the motorbike "thing" in Vietnam. Bought a couple of bikes and toured the country.... awesome experience!

Pity we couldn't do the Sơn Đoòng Cave, maybe next time when the price is a bit lower....
Thanks for the bringing back that memory

Son Doong cave, discovered by a local 18 years ago, is more than 200 meters wide, 150 meters high, and at least 6.5 kilometers long, though the explorers said they were unable to explore it fully. British explorers have recently discovered that Son Doong is much larger than the world's biggest known cave. The biggest section of Son Doong is five kilometers in length, 200 meters high and 150 meters wide, said Howard Limbirt of the British Cave Research Association team searching the area April 10-14, 2009. Son Dong is much larger than Deer Cave in Malaysia, currently considered the world's largest, an explorer said (Deer is 90 meters wide, 100 meters high and 2 kilometers long). The Son Doong cave has replaced to take pole position as the world's largest cave.

    I like caves :-)
    Probably not all caves though.
Would love to be in a crystal cave.

Oh, I found this and just had to post it, tee hee.

Beautiful spar crystals in the Aragon Room of Soldiers Cave. These crystals, which are several inches long, formed under water.

They are awesome indeed, but I am not picky, I also like trees, very much.

So, a cave, WITH TREES, well hey.
Still, surely there's some crystals in there too!
