    The Hopi are just one group that say they were helped by strange beings when the world was hit by a firy catyclysm.
    Who are the ant people?

    “The Hopi are connected to so many different entities,” David said, “that we might think of as extraterrestrial today. They have the idea of the ‘Sky People,’ or ‘Sky Elders,’ coming down to the Earth. One particular group of people that the Hopi have talked about in their legends—and I found evidence of this in the rock art there—are the Ant People, a very important group that helped the Hopi out during the destruction of two different worlds.”

    That Hopi sense of history goes like this: the first world was destroyed by fire, which may have manifested itself as an asteroid strike or some kind of volcanism. The second world was destroyed by ice, indicating the ice age or an extremely cold period. The Ant People led the Hopis down into caverns where they survived the terrible cataclysms being suffered by the Earth. The Ant People also taught the Hopis to sprout beans in the caverns in order to feed the people, an event commemorated even today by the ritual Bean Dance

    “The Ant People are basically benevolent creatures,” David said. “In the pictures I’ve seen in the rock art there are antennae on these creatures and they have spindly bodies and large eyes and bulbous heads. Some of these creatures assume what’s called a ‘prayer stance.’ That means that both arms are raised at their sides above their heads and the elbows are at right angles. This is a traditional stance that you see all over the Southwest in rock art. Also, in the Freemasonry lore, it’s called ‘the grand hailing sign of distress.’ So maybe this information from ancient times was filtered through the Knights Templar and eventually the Freemasons, this very ancient knowledge about the Sky People coming down.”

    There is also a linguistic link with the Anunnaki of ancient Sumeria, thought by revered scholar Zachariah Sitchin and others to be the alien race that came down from the sky to teach man the ways of civilization.

    “It’s funny,” David said, “but the Hopi word for ‘ant’ is ‘Anu,’ and the Hopi word for friends is ‘naki.’ So you put those two together, the Anunnaki, the Sumerian cylinder seals and so forth, you see these Sky People came down to Earth. So the Ant People might be the same as the Anunnaki of the Sumerians.”

    The friendly Ant People seem to have left the Hopis to their own devices when the time came for the Third World to be destroyed in a terrible flood. In that disaster, the Hopis survived by going across the ocean on bamboo rafts to arrive in our present Fourth World and the Ant People dropped out of the story. But other helpers soon came along.

    “The Hopis have other benevolent entities that have helped them,” David said. “They have what is known as the Sky God Sotuknang. He has a curved headdress, again similar to a helmet, and looks very much like an alien being. There’s a legend about Sotuknang related to the flood.”

    According to the story related by David, a great flood was about to engulf a Hopi village and the people were fleeing the coming destruction. There was a little boy and girl, twins, who were somehow left behind. They decided to try to find their parents and escape the flood.

    “So they went out across the desert,” David recounted, “and during the first night they were camping. They saw what is called a ‘flying shield’ come down right before them. This being, this sky creature, got out of this flying shield. It was described in the legend as having some kind of clothing or costume that glittered like icicles, and the face shone like a star. That’s the way they describe the face.

    “So this might be some kind of inter-dimensional being,” he continued, “or it might be that the helmet is lit up in some fashion. But this creature came to the children and said, ‘Don’t be afraid. I’m going to take you up into my flying shield and we’re going to go up above the desert and find your parents.’ So much like the account in the Book of Enoch, these two children are taken up into this flying shield, many miles above the desert. And this entity Sotuknang gave them something to eat, corn and melon and so forth. And he said that, ‘In the future, I’m going to come to you in your dreams and I’ll instruct you in the proper way to live and the proper life to pursue.’”

    The sky creature located the twins’ parents and delivered the children to them, after which the flying shield took off again. David explained that flying shields are a frequent motif of the Hopi, and there is again a linguistic connection.

    “The flying shields are interesting,” he said, “because the term for them is ‘paatuwvota.’ The prefix for this word is ‘paa,’ which means ‘water’ or ‘wonder.’ Some think that this describes the concentric circles in water, the way they expand in water. This is the way flying shields looked in the air when they were flying.”

    Along with Sotuknang, the benevolent Kachinas, the spirit messengers, also pilot the flying shields-type craft. There is yet another Hopis god with extraterrestrial overtones, named Masau’u.

    “Masau’u was there at the beginning of the Fourth World . He’s the god of the Earth and the underworld and fire. This god led the people around and determined where they should build their villages. The people were basically migrating across the desert and building stone pueblos. They would live in these pueblos for maybe a century or less, and then they would abandon things and move on to another place. And the god Masau’u was with them all along in their journey. That’s where I believe this pattern of Orion on the desert of Arizona was fixed, by their migrations and the instructions of the Hopi god about where to build these villages.

    “But Masau’u is a strange looking creature,” David continued. “He has a bulbous head and very large round eyes and a large round mouth. And he’s kind of bald. It’s said that his skin resembles the texture of a summer squash, kind of bumpy like that. His feet are very long and his body is always described as being gray. In fact, the word ‘amaus,’ the root word of Masau’u, literally means in the Hopi language gray.     This story comes from the Hopi people of northern Arizona. "Hopi" means "People of Peace". The stories here were recorded in the 1950s by Oswald White Bear Fredericks and his wife Naomi from the storytelling of older Hopi at the village of Oraibi, which tree-ring dating indicates has been inhabited by the Hopi since at least 1150 AD.

    The Four Creations

    The world at first was endless space in which existed only the Creator, Taiowa. This world had no time, no shape, and no life, except in the mind of the Creator. Eventually the infinite creator created the finite in Sotuknang, whom he called his nephew and whom he created as his agent to establish nine universes. Sotuknang gathered together matter from the endless space to make the nine solid worlds. Then the Creator instructed him to gather together the waters from the endless space and place them on these worlds to make land and sea. When Sotuknang had done that, the Creator instructed him to gather together air to make winds and breezes on these worlds.

    The fourth act of creation with which the Creator charged Sotuknang was the creation of life. Sotuknang went to the world that was to first host life and there he created Spider Woman, and he gave her the power to create life. First Spider Woman took some earth and mixed it with saliva to make two beings. Over them she sang the Creation Song, and they came to life. She instructed one of them, Poqanghoya, to go across the earth and solidify it. She instructed the other, Palongawhoya, to send out sound to resonate through the earth, so that the earth vibrated with the energy of the Creator. Poqanghoya and Palongawhoya were despatched to the poles of the earth to keep it rotating.

    Then Spider Woman made all the plants, the flowers, the bushes, and the trees. Likewise she made the birds and animals, again using earth and singing the Creation Song. When all this was done, she made human beings, using yellow, red, white, and black earth mixed with her saliva. Singing the Creation Song, she made four men, and then in her own form she made four women. At first they had a soft spot in their foreheads, and although it solidified, it left a space through which they could hear the voice of Sotuknang and their Creator. Because these people could not speak, Spider Woman called on Sotuknang, who gave them four languages. His only instructions were for them to respect their Creator and to live in harmony with him.

    These people spread across the earth and multiplied. Despite their four languages, in those days they could understand each other's thoughts anyway, and for many years they and the animals lived together as one. Eventually, however, they began to divide, both the people from the animals and the people from each other, as they focused on their differences rather than their similarities. As division and suspicion became more widespread, only a few people from each of the four groups still remembered their Creator. Sotuknang appeared before these few and told them that he and the Creator would have to destroy this world, and that these few who remembered the Creator must travel across the land, following a cloud and a star, to find refuge. These people began their treks from the places where they lived, and when they finally converged Sotuknang appeared again. He opened a huge ant mound and told these people to go down in it to live with the ants while he destroyed the world with fire, and he told them to learn from the ants while they were there. The people went down and lived with the ants, who had storerooms of food that they had gathered in the summer, as well as chambers in which the people could live.This went on for quite a while, because after Sotuknang cleansed the world with fire it took a long time for the world to cool off. As the ants' food ran low, the people refused the food, but the ants kept feeding them and only tightened their own belts, which is why ants have such tiny waists today.

    Finally Sotuknang was done making the second world, which was not quite as beautiful as the first. Again he admonished the people to remember their Creator as they and the ants that had hosted them spread across the earth. The people multiplied rapidly and soon covered the entire earth. They did not live with the animals, however, because the animals in this second world were wild and unfriendly. Instead the people lived in villages and built roads between these, so that trade sprang up. They stored goods and traded those for goods from elsewhere, and soon they were trading for things they did not need. As their desire to have more and more grew, they began to forget their Creator, and soon wars over resources and trade were breaking out between villages. Finally Sotuknang appeared before the few people who still remembered the Creator, and again he sent them to live with the ants while he destroyed this corrupt world. This time he ordered Poqanghoya and Palongawhoya to abandon their posts at the poles, and soon the world spun out of control and rolled over. Mountains slid and fell, and lakes and rivers splashed across the land as the earth tumbled, and finally the earth froze over into nothing but ice.

    This went on for years, and again the people lived with the ants. Finally Sotuknang sent Poqanghoya and Palongawhoya back to the poles to resume the normal rotation of the earth, and soon the ice melted and life returned. Sotuknang called the people up from their refuge, and he introduced them to the third world that he had made. Again he admonished the people to remember their Creator as they spread across the land. As they did so, they multiplied quickly, even more quickly than before, and soon they were living in large cities and developing into separate nations. With so many people and so many nations, soon there was war, and some of the nations made huge shields on which they could fly, and from these flying shields they attacked other cities. When Sotuknang saw all this war and destruction, he resolved to destroy this world quickly before it corrupted the few people who still remembered the Creator. He called on Spider Woman to gather those few and, along the shore, she placed each person with a little food in the hollow stem of a reed. When she had done this, Sotuknang let loose a flood that destroyed the warring cities and the world on which they lived.

    Once the rocking of the waves ceased, Spider Woman unsealed the reeds so the people could see. They floated on the water for many days, looking for land, until finally they drifted to an island. On the island they built little reed boats and set sail again to the east. After drifting many days, they came to a larger island, and after many more days to an even larger island. They hoped that this would be the fourth world that Sótuknang had made for them, but Spider Woman assured them that they still had a long and hard journey ahead. They walked across this island and built rafts on the far side, and set sail to the east again. They came to a fourth and still larger island, but again they had to cross it on foot and then build more rafts to continue east. From this island, Spider Woman sent them on alone, and after many days they encountered a vast land. Its shores were so high that they could not find a place to land, and only by opening the doors in their heads did they know where to go to land.

    When they finally got ashore, Sotuknang was there waiting for them. As they watched to the west, he made the islands that they had used like stepping stones disappear into the sea. He welcomed them to the fourth world, but he warned them that it was not as beautiful as the previous ones, and that life here would be harder, with heat and cold, and tall mountains and deep valleys. He sent them on their way to migrate across the wild new land in search of the homes for their respective clans. The clans were to migrate across the land to learn its ways, although some grew weak and stopped in the warm climates or rich lands along the way. The Hopi trekked and far and wide, and went through the cold and icy country to the north before finally settling in the arid lands between the Colorado River and Rio Grande River. They chose that place so that the hardship of their life would always remind them of their dependence on, and link to, their Creator.

    On a narrow ledge in Dinosaur National Monument a series of Classic Vernal Style trapezoidal anthropomorphs decorate the sandstone cliff face. The anthropomorphs are large, 3-5 feet tall. Several are decorated with dot groups on their torsos and heads. Here again as at McKee Springs Wash and Ashley-Dry Fork several figures are attached to a mushroom-shaped form. While this appendage sometimes has facial features elsewhere, here they are solidly pecked. One of the largest figures has a miniature group adjacent to one shoulder. Located on a high cliff, this site is both hard to find and difficult and dangerous to visit.

    The story of the "Hormiga People" is an integral part of the legend, history and mythology of the Hopi Indians of northern Arizona. Hopi traditional wisdom speaks of how, in very, very ancient times, the Earth underwent a series of terrible cataclysms (or cycles) that manifested themselves in Ice Age forms, massive floods, and possibly even disastrous polar inclinations.

    Such is the story, the Hopi might well have been exterminated when the world was in the process of enormous change, were it not for the aid of a race of mysterious and diminutive humanoids. They said they live underground, in parts of the southwestern United States. They were, of course, the "Ant People". According to the legends, for the most part the "Ant People" stayed away from the human race, which was largely unaware of the existence of the strange world under the depths. However, sometimes the "Ant People" would come to the surface, and also from time to time offered their help. Thus, little by little, the "Ant People" became known and legends began properly.

    A Hopi Legend

    The First People of Tokpela, the First World, were safely sheltered underground as fire rained down upon the earth. Volcanoes and fire storms destroyed all that was above them until the earth, the waters, and the air itself was all elemental fire.

    While this was going on, the people lived happily underground with the Ant People. Their homes were just like the people's homes on the earth-surface being destroyed. There were rooms to live in and rooms where they stored their food. There was light to see by too. The tiny bits of crystal in the sand of the anthill had absorbed the light of the sun, and using the inner vision of the center located behind the eyes they could see by its reflection very well.

    Only one thing troubled them: the food had begun to run short.

    It had not taken Sótuknang long to destroy the world, nor would it take him long to create another one. But it was taking a long time for the First World to cool off before a Second World could be created. That was why the food was running short.

    "Do not give us so much of the food you have worked so hard to gather and store," the people said.

    "You are our guests," the Ant people said, "What we have is yours also." So the Ant people continued to deprive themselves of food in order to supply their guests. Every day, they tied their belts tighter and tighter, and this is why ants today are so small around the waist.

    Finally, that which had been the First World cooled off. Sótuknang purified it. Then he began to create the Second World. He changed its form completely, putting land where there was water and water where there was land so that the people upon their emergence would have nothing to remind them of the previous wicked world.

    When all was ready, he came to the roof of the Ant kiva, stamped on it, and gave his call. Immediately the Chief of the Ant People went up to the opening and rolled back the núta (the straw hatch that covered the opening to the kiva). "Yung-ai! Come in! You are welcome!" he called.

    Sótuknang spoke first to the Ant People. "I am thanking you for doing your part in helping to save these people. It will always be remembered, this you have done, The time will come when another world will be destroyed, and when the wicked people know their last day on earth has come, they will sit by an anthill and cry for the ants to save them. Now, having fulfilled your duty, you may go forth to this Second World and take your place as ants."

    Then Sótuknang said to the people, "Make your emergence now to the Second World I have created. It is not quite as beautiful as the First World, but it is beautiful just the same. You will like it. So multiply and be happy. But remember your creator and the laws he gave you. When I hear you sing joyful praises to him I will know you are my children, and you will be close to me in your hearts."

    So the people emerged to the second world. Its mane was Tokpa (Dark Midnight). Its direction was south, its color blue, its mineral was qöchásive (silver). Chiefs upon it were salvi (spruce), kwáhu (eagle), and kolíchiyaw (skunk).

    It was a big land, and the people multiplied rapidly, spreading over it to all directions, even to the other side of the world. This did not matter, for they were so close together in spirit they could see and talk to each other from the center on top of the head. Because this door was still open, they felt close to Sótuknang and they sang joyful praises to the Creator, Taiowa.

    They did not have the privilege of living with the animals, though, for the animals were wild and kept apart. Being separated from the animals, the people tended to their own affairs. They built homes, then villages and trails between them. They made things with their hands and stored food like the Ant People.     The Hopi god of death, the earth, and the Underworld is named Masau'u. Like the ants, he possesses knowledge of both the surface of the earth and the chthonic regions. He wears a mask with large open eye-holes and a large mouth. His huge, bald head resembles a summer squash, and his forehead bulges out in a ridge. His feet are long as a forearm, and his body is gray. This color is essential, since his name comes from the Hopi word maasi, meaning gray. In fact, this description from Hopi mythology is uncomfortably close to contemporary images of extraterrestrial Greys.

    Masau'u is also the terrestrial equivalent of Orion, whose name, as we said, means ant. The Hopi believe that distances are insignificant to Masau'u because he can traverse the entire earth before morning comes. What better way to express OrionÃ*s movement from the eastern to the western horizon during the night?

    The Hopi word for ant is anu. In the same language naki means friend, prayer feathers, food offerings, or sand--a nexus of concepts pertaining to this insect that sometimes flies. A combination of the two words (anu-naki, or "ant friend") may be related to SitchinÃ*s Anunnaki. The Babylonian sky god was also named Anu. One Sumerian cylinder seal from around 2250 B.C. shows the pantheon of primary deities wearing peaked hats. The Hopi sky god Sotuknang, closely associated with the earth god Masau'u, also wears a pointed headdress. Like their Middle Eastern counterparts, these American Indian divinities were present at the creation of the universe and continued to be instrumental in the cultureÃ*s development.

    Anu (or Danu) was also the appellation of the Celtic mother goddess and patroness of the dead. In addition, Anu was another name for the Egyptian city of Heliopolis, where the benben stone of meteoric iron was kept. Furthermore, the Egyptian word anu meant not only products, revenues, or something brought in but also gifts, tributes, and offerings.     The Ant People may have also lived in ancient Egypt. Akhenaten, the 18th Dynasty pharaoh who ruled from 1351–1334 BC, is shown in some depictions with an elongated skull like the shape of an ant’s head. His almond-shaped eyes and neck are like the ant’s, and either the serpent or the vulture on his uraeus resembles the ant’s mandibles. He also has spindly arms and legs like those of the ant, and his upper body resembles the ant’s thorax while his lower body mirrors the ant’s abdomen. Akhenaten’s body type can be specifically compared to the Pharaoh Ant ( Momomorium pharaonis ), which originated in West Africa. It also has an elongated head, a yellow to reddish brown body, and a darker abdomen with a stinger.

    Perhaps it is more than a coincidence that the Egyptian word sahu means “stars of Orion,” whereas the Hopi word sohu means “star,” the most important of which are those in the constellation Orion.     Palatkwapi-Sedona: City of the Star People

    A legend among the Hopis states that there was once a great temple city of wisdom built by the Star People, the Kachinas. Many of the Hopi clans visited this city during their respective migrations throughout the Americas and later shared stories of it when all the clans reunited at their final destination on the Hopi Mesas. This mysterious city, known as Palatkwapi, the “Red House,” was where the Star People taught important rituals and secrets of the universe that are still enacted and honored by the clans.
    Over the last one hundred years there has been much speculation regarding the location of Palatkwapi. An abundance of ethnographers have located Palatkwapi in the Sedona-Verde Valley region, but there have also been other academics who have placed it much further south. Most everyone agrees, however, that the City of the Star People was someplace south of the Hopi Mesas. One Hopi legend of the Patki or Water Clan recounted by ethnographer Alexander M. Stephen in Hopi Journey states: “...no one knows just where the Red Land is, but it is someplace in the far southwest [of Hopiland].” Distance is, of course, relative, especially when you are traveling by foot.....

    .....As previously mentioned, although the destruction of Palatkwapi appears to coincide with the end of the Third World the period of its initial construction is nearly impossible to pin down.
    If, for example, one subscribes to the time periods known as the Hopi Worlds (A “World” is a cycle of time. Historically, there have been Four Worlds) or the Dream Time of the Australian Aborigines, then Palatkwapi could have been constructed as recently as 10,000 years ago or as anciently as a million or more years ago. This is because the “Worlds” and “Dream Time” are very inexact time periods........

    .......If the building of the ancient megalithic circles and temples occurred during the time the Hopis refer to as the First or Second Worlds - when humans had their crown chakra wide open and remained in continual communication with the Creator - their designs could have been spontaneously implanted by the Creator into the minds of their builders. The creative “Gods” could have also received some supernatural abilities to build the temples from the same source. While constructing the temples in Sedona these “Gods” would have also been assisted by the natural earth energies of the area. The amplifying vortexual power combined with the iron and crystal-infused particles would have first magnified the thought forms of the “Gods” and then magnetically united the Sedona sand into the solid formations delineated by the builders’ mental blueprints.

    The extent records of Palatkwapi imply that its original builders were the Kachinas. They also reveal that the city’s initial construction preceded the Fourth World. Some Fourth World construction (or reconstruction) is, however, said to have been overseen by the Kachinas and carried out by the Hopis and/or the members of other tribes residing at Palatkwapi. Completely surrounded by a high wall, the first section was reserved for ceremonial purposes; the second section, adjoining it, contained storage rooms for food; and the third section comprised the living quarters for the people of all clans.     Sedona: City of the Star People reveals the esoteric history of Sedona, Arizona, which author Pinkham says was known in very ancient times as Palatkwapi, the “Red House.” According to Hopi legend, Extraterrestrial Star People built Palatkwapi as a glorious city of sacred wisdom.
