I'm not feeling pessimistic like they were in this song, but I am loving the guitar solo.

This here is a slightly modified version of an old classic, but the reason why I'm posting it here is because I've been wondering about something — to the degree of silliness — in this particular version of the song.

During the outro jam, Greg Phillinganes (on the keyboards) sets in a tune from a (possibly older) US American television show, and then the others pick up on that. And that's the part I've been wondering about, because I recognize the tune but I cannot place it. So I'd appreciate it if one of our Acronymian members were able to tell me what TV show this tune was for. The pertinent section starts at 5:38 and lasts until about 6:12.

Edit: Never mind... Somebody posted it in the comment section. Apparently it was a drama series with Brian Dennehy, called "Birdland".

I'm glad you found your answer and that you shared this. Good one. I did't realized they jammed so much live.

Going to Celtic Fling this weekend:

We know these dudes, they're great guys, talented and hard working.

Oh yeah, that has always been one of Toto's stronger points. After all, they're all session musicians with a background in jazz. They even jam on some of their studio recordings.

The bass player is hardly audible in this recording, but it's a very good cover version. They've stayed pretty close to Eric Johnson's album version of the song — I have that album.

    This here is the original.

This is a song that has stayed with me over the years...enjoy the poetic description of Vincent Van Gogh in words and music.

I guess I'm in my Toto mood again, but then again, they've got so much material — both old and new — that I'm still discovering, and they are without any shred of doubt one of the greatest bands ever, notwithstanding that they've never been quite as popular as some other contemporary artists.

I only discovered these two songs through the video of their 35th anniversary tour, but they're both quite old already. The song of the first video below was recorded with Bobby Kimball — as you can hear — but Bobby has in the meantime been replaced again by Joseph Williams.

During the 35th anniversary concert tour, Joseph also did the lead vocal on the song in the second video below, but the song as it appeared on the album and as you can hear it here was actually sung by Steve Porcaro — only of the very few songs he ever sang, because he considered his voice not powerful enough. Steve later on left Toto in order to pursue a career in writing motion picture music scores, but when Mike Porcaro was diagnosed with ALS, Steve rejoined the band as the only one of the three Porcaro brothers to remain — Jeff Porcaro had already passed away over twenty years ago, and Mike Porcaro passed away three years ago.

Local bands around here cover Toto. They know good music when they play it.

I think I saw him in concert - semi small venue...it sucked, the acoustics were very bad and I couldn't get a clear 'hearing' no matter where I positioned myself.
