I would guess that at the time in the early sixties on the mainstream understandings of space it was for the brave and strongest and a pilot was not usually the brains.But stubborn, single minded and endurance pron types.Test pilots was braking speed records and used to a state of emergency at all times . The scientists were not.
Also Real scientists were not the stereo type image hero ,that they wanted . Today scientists would be far more adequate, for society today but not then.
Just my quick thoughts.
