I would guess that at the time in the early sixties on the mainstream understandings of space it was for the brave and strongest and a pilot was not usually the brains.But stubborn, single minded and endurance pron types.Test pilots was braking speed records and used to a state of emergency at all times . The scientists were not.

Also Real scientists were not the stereo type image hero ,that they wanted . Today scientists would be far more adequate, for society today but not then.

Just my quick thoughts.

In the Stargate movie and series O'Neill clearly has no respect for the scientist Jackson. It takes time and events for him to learn to appreciate the scientist. Perhaps this is a refection of how things were/are.
