All this tornado talk 'inspired' me to look for a video that gives you an idea what they look like from close range...

Back in 1974 my brother lost his house and 2 of his next door neighbors. I didn't realize for years that I was suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome.

There is some Kansas footage taken a number of years back (filmed from an underpass) that shows what looks like a sheet of paper blowing around in the background. It later was stated that it was actually a white van caught in the vortex. It's my brother's current home location. I get the heebee jeebees watching videos like this.

    Question

Without wanting to derail this thread, and you may color me ignorant, but if the United States of Acronyms is tornado/hurricane country — which it is, quite evidently — then why the hell is the vast majority of houses, farms and other rural buildings made up of wood and plaster, pulled up around a brick-and-mortar chimney? Why not make the houses out of some stronger materials, like industrial-grade concrete and cement, instead of spending that money on a swimming pool in the backyard?

It just doesn't make any sense to me. If I were an Acronymian and I was going to build me a house, it would have to be about as strong as a World-War-II-era military bunker. And the US most certainly does have those. It just so happens to be that you commonly only find them at missile launch sites.

Yeah, that's a good point. Growing up in Kansas during a different era, I was determined if I owned a home, it would be equipped with an underground shelter...away from the house.
Here in Texas, I have a home that is in a 500 year flood plain (that use to be good enough)...oh and it is brick...

However, the home I grew up in was built in the early 1900's. Not much planning or forethought went into those homes.

When I graduated from college my plan was to live in New Mexico because I felt it was one of the safest locations in the U.S. save sinkholes. Fate was not kind and I ended up along the Texas coast. Anyway, you are absolutely correct that people need to be a lot smarter but if you'll notice those most often impacted by adverse conditions are those that don't really have viable alternatives to their circumstances.

God protects fools and idiots...It appears that Gov. Rick Scott may emerge unscathed. It's about the money. Texas, for one, is economically squeeky, they save their money for a rainy day, yet, when the rainy days appear, it appears they have no money. Just another thing that drives me crazy...

It's saddening what drives you crazy. What can you do about it - not much or nothing. So why allow yourself to spend time thinking about it, at least not the way that leads to start feeling crazy. You could stop putting your focus on it and free yourself from that happening. With Blessings and love. K

Tornados have always fascinated and frightened me. When we moved to Georgia I would have dreams of tornados following me down the street. They come through MD occasionally. The west coast doesn't have them much.

    Hi Kathy,

I appreciate what your saying, honestly though, my concern is for other people that suffer because of rampant dysfunction. At one time I was in a space where all the suffering and self-destruction would nearly drive me to tears...then I got on the correct medication...

We are scientists engaged in the study of biological and health effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (EMF). Based upon peer-reviewed, published research, we have serious concerns regarding the ubiquitous and increasing exposure to EMF generated by electric and wireless devices. These include–but are not limited to–radiofrequency radiation (RFR) emitting devices, such as cellular and cordless phones and their base stations, Wi-Fi, broadcast antennas, smart meters, and baby monitors as well as electric devices and infra-structures used in the delivery of electricity that generate extremely-low frequency electromagnetic field (ELF EMF).
