I can try...The way a child forms a sense of self begins from the beginning...looking with eyes barely able to focus the infant sees a reflection...of his/her mother or father. If the child sees a smile it begins to form a sense of 'hmm, that seems cool'. As it develops, the child begins to associate from a very visceral level his/her value from how it 'feels' which is a direct result of the level of care from the parents (in deference to EB, I'm assuming you realize this, of course, and have asked me to expand as a test of veracity... it's kind of like looking in your rearview mirror and seein' a Pole-ece car)

anyway...one of the most vital things to healthy development is 'validation' that what we feel, think, and value is not only rational, sane as in a reflection of reality but that it is important. The most dysfunctional of parents who thrive on the double-bind instill a sense of loss of self in their children by not giving due compassion and even 'agreement'. This is one simple but very egregious example that I saw a friend do to his daughter one day. She was very little, 4 or 5 probably and She said to her dad while riding in a car, "I'm hot. He responded, "Oh hell, you're not hot, you don't even know what hot is!" I was thinking in my head that my friend had no idea the damage he was inflicting on his innocent baby.

They learn that they cannot trust their essential sense of self because they have been invalidated. Speaking from personal experience it is the most painful of experiences. And when I see it visited on other innocent children it saddens me beyond words.

I actually had a lot of experience with that. And it continued into adulthood.

People just automatically, as a knee-jerk, assume something is wrong or unsupported and reject the idea out of hand without thinking or looking. They might even go the next step and tell others about how 'wrong' something was, when in truth they're clueless.

They have to proactively 'bring people to their side' by creating a bias against the person who doesn't toe their line. And it undermines family relationships.

This is what happens when people need to be right or are so sure they're right that they just don't listen or think.

And yes, doing it to children is awful.

I think plenty of children experience this.
Then there are the ones who experience entirely different traumas, like their parents all dying in Africa from disease.
Or having Israeli police spray their schools down with liquefied human effluent every day for months.
Or parents that neglect to notice the friends older kids have been sexually abusing their young children.
Or the 100's of thousands of male babies that were circumcised and have no idea where their trauma came from.
Or even the millions of parents who teach their children that magic is just a disappoint by lying to them about Santa and Fluffy Bunny.

Some of the stuff people would put at the top of the list as being 'bad' are actually identifiable, which ought mean they are able to be over come. Other stuff, I can even hear people sniggering about now, is not considered, therefore you can't fix what is unknown or repressed.
We can't forgive that which we don't identify. Does it still have an effect on psyche? I am sure it can. And it will be ridiculed as nothing, even by those who would offer compassion on other instances.
So, if there is a positive, which is always the aim to seek, surely.. the positive is when one can identify their particular trauma, then they can overcome it. But, well plenty don't want to it seems. They will let resentment become part of their motivation. I have seen many many people who claim to have over come their demons, but often they have just repressed them or dressed them up as reasons to feel validated for other behaviours.

When the things you listed are happening, enjoy being, family communication isn't even really an issue is it? These are atrocities and terrible tragedies.

When you have the time, place, and peace to be able to put aside ego and communicate with your children/spouse/ect., you really should because you don't have a chance to think about it when social upheaval is going on around you.

Makes me wonder why so many seem to want to bring it here - as in violent action including delusions of civil war and revolution. If the desired outcome is to weaken America so the rest of the world can swoop in, well, they'll succeed, won't they?

It is difficult to know how some of those listed that are macro atrocities, fare on the people's ability to communicate with their family. My feeling it is a topsy turvy world and I see evidence of people who have had those BIG things happen, appreciate each other in their family. Where as in the comparatively 'petty' civilised world of easy living, families can create drama and emotional conflict under the radar, as an outlet for emotions.

All the tears weigh the same, it's just a different game. I have only watched sections of the fellow this thread is about. He seems to speak common sense to people who need it, but I don't feel I need it as I was once him and over came. I believe EVERYONE is traumatised or has been psychologically injured just in different ways, and I am quite ready to believe it has been a necessity for soul growth over quite some years. Well, maybe not soul growth in that meaning, maybe more soul repair.

I find watching it all play out can be quite frustrating when you can see through it all as injured people all lashing out at each other or self medicating at others expense.

Actually the soul growth/repair thing is not worded right. In the same breath I think of witnessing a few people, who by the end of their life are battered and crushed, and then shortly before passing away can sometimes have things happen to them medically in which they 'go' away, and come back for a while, noticeably changed and more 'serene' more like the soul they arrived on the planet as. So I dunno.
