I can try...The way a child forms a sense of self begins from the beginning...looking with eyes barely able to focus the infant sees a reflection...of his/her mother or father. If the child sees a smile it begins to form a sense of 'hmm, that seems cool'. As it develops, the child begins to associate from a very visceral level his/her value from how it 'feels' which is a direct result of the level of care from the parents (in deference to EB, I'm assuming you realize this, of course, and have asked me to expand as a test of veracity... it's kind of like looking in your rearview mirror and seein' a Pole-ece car)
anyway...one of the most vital things to healthy development is 'validation' that what we feel, think, and value is not only rational, sane as in a reflection of reality but that it is important. The most dysfunctional of parents who thrive on the double-bind instill a sense of loss of self in their children by not giving due compassion and even 'agreement'. This is one simple but very egregious example that I saw a friend do to his daughter one day. She was very little, 4 or 5 probably and She said to her dad while riding in a car, "I'm hot. He responded, "Oh hell, you're not hot, you don't even know what hot is!" I was thinking in my head that my friend had no idea the damage he was inflicting on his innocent baby.
They learn that they cannot trust their essential sense of self because they have been invalidated. Speaking from personal experience it is the most painful of experiences. And when I see it visited on other innocent children it saddens me beyond words.
