Some of my little cousins were due to attend a party with a lot of kids they didn't know. I was with my cousin (the mother of one of the two and aunt to the other) and we overheard a little exchange they had. One of them is more reserved and shy whereas the other is very outgoing, confident and assured.
They were eight (the reserved one) and nine (the outgoing one). The eight year old said he wasn't sure whether it was going to be fun and the nine year old asked him why. He told her that he was nervous, and she turned to look him straight in the eye and, in the strangest combination of serious and flippant I've ever heard, said "just be yourself. That's the person I love and I know about these things." Then they skipped off together while my cousin and I gave each other one of those looks.
