Black Flies On The Window Sill.....

.......is not only an amazing song by Ben Howard that oddly reminds me of Seikou (no idea why), it is also a predicament that I find myself in at my new house (hence my lengthy absence from TOT of late). I am having to murder a couple of dozen a day and I'm not at all happy about that. It affects my smug spiritual muse far too acutely to continue.

Does anyone know of a more efficient way to dispose of the pests than my current acrobatics? This consists of me flying around the living room and kitchen area, tea towel spun into a make-shift whip, in a display of martial prowess perhaps only rivalled or bettered by Shezbeth.

Any solutions would be gratefully received.

There is an electric swatter similar to a badminton racquet which is very effective 777 which zaps them dead instantly.
Alternatively, there are plug in ultra violet appliances which do the zapping for you.

Either way, you are still guilty of insect murder! lol

I remember something from feng shui.
A bowl of water in front of the house, but can't find or remember at which angle from the sun...
Which was important. it had to do with the energetic properties of water and the reflection of the sun..
You could try putting a few bowls in the window sills and a larger bowl in the front and back yard...

what are those species exactly, I know the black flies (Simuliidae) are active in the summer and you can't even see them in the winter unless it is at least 15 degree outside.

Anyway here os a link that suggest 11 ways of getting rid of them, here:

    http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Flies-in-the-House

One of them is lavender essential oil, i will add probably lemon grass oil or eucalyptus oil.

If nothing helps then you buy one of these Head nets are perhaps the most effective physical control of black flies in your immediate personal space.

and you can also add Lighter shades of clothing are supposed to keep black flies away, or at least make you look less delicious. I don’t know if there’s actually been any scientific studies done on the color range that black flies find less inviting, but white, off-white, and light tan colored shirts and pants seem to attract less black flies than darker colors like blue, red, black, green, or brown. Why is this? You’re asking the wrong person.

cucumbers for flies .. i forgot about cucumbers . anyhow thats what mother in law says lol peel the cucumbers and leave the peelings lying near the window sills and on the kitchen counter on plates. also .....
Lavender Essential Oil on paper left around where the flies are and dried Basil hung up on cheesecloth both work as a good repellent too ! xx

Erm, a fly swatter may be useful, they have holes in them so the fly doesn't get "blown" past it due to the air displacement you get with a solid object, a hardware shop might have them.

Large black flies at this time of year are likely to be from the corpse of a dead animal or person in the house somewhere........I wouldn't swat those with a tea towel

Time to check the loft & prise up some floor boards

Maybe a cat or a rat got in & got trapped & died in some hard to get to place, behind or under something.

I were you, I'd quit focusing on the flies and start looking for the dead body under the floor boards.

put used, but unwashed jam jars istead of bowles of water. place them in 2or 3 strategic positions. wait until they flock.

sneak up on them with your vacuum cleaner. if you care for their livelihoods you could empty the contents of your vacuum bag straight after.

you'll avoid the risk of staining the walls etc by smashing
