Apologies, I missed it, it looked to me like you were just looking at titles.

My point is, there are a fair number of people, not to mention kids who resonate with the "I noticed ____ when I was younger" or "when my Dad was in the military" etc. Indeed "harvestable" as DJ says. I've talked to a number of younger guys just out of the military, a fair number of them are resonant to the "weird sh!t that is going on" or "that I noticed" thing. Very rich vein they can tap into. This seems to work until you get to about and age of 35 or so, with those older not interested or having time, or thinking you're crazy.

I have to correct Gio on something here. Unregistered visitors cannot post here, and never could. Likewise at Project Avalon, and I think this would apply to most forums.

Some posts do have the title "Guest" underneath the poster's name, but this is a different thing. Those are posts made by a member whose account was deleted. Deleting the account automatically sets all of the posts made by that account as "guest posts", because if the posts were deleted as well in the same go, then that could seriously mess up the continuity of the threads these members had participated in.

Super moderators and administrators can hard-delete posts or even entire threads — i.e. physically remove them from the database, as opposed to soft-deletion, which simply marks them as deleted and allows them to be undeleted again later — but this is separate from the deletion of member accounts.

I have to correct Aragorn on something also ... They could at the original Project Avalon Forum ...

Realizing the staff here (or perhaps even Avalon) could ever again handle such a flow ...

It was another time within a community with a lot less hate than now ...

    Oh well.

It would either way be very dangerous, Gio. Even right now, with our three-factor registration process [*], we still get occasional spammers making it through, or at the very least also into the second stage of registration.

And they're not all people, even. We are constantly being hit by bots trying to register an account here, or even trying to PM somebody. And it's not all from malicious botnets either. Sometimes it's just the bots from Google or Amazon.

We can block some of that traffic by adding firewall rules, but that's a tricky thing in and of itself. Not all of those IP addresses are static, and if you block entire IP ranges, then you're also preventing bona fide human beings from signing up here. But the traffic from those bots is really huge — about on par with benign traffic on a good day, and exceeding that on a bad day.

    [*]
    • The candidate-member signs up. This puts them in the "users awaiting e-mail confirmation" queue. The server then sends out an e-mail to the address that the candidate-member signed up with here.

    • The candidate-member responds to the e-mail by clicking the link therein, which puts them in the "users awaiting moderation" queue.

    • Either Malc or I myself will do a background check on the e-mail address and the IP address against several online databases of known forum spammers, as well as against Google, just in case we may be dealing with some shady character — which has already happened, even though they weren't listed as spammers anywhere. If the member checks out clean, we accept their registration, and this then puts them in the "registered members" group.
