Glow in the dark trees to replace street lights , it could be the future ?

According to Daan Roosegaarde, the future of art and design is awash with spectacular innovation.

From giant vacuum cleaning systems aimed at eradicating smog to "smart" apparel that becomes translucent when the wearer is turned on, the Dutch artist/designer/architect has helped imagine some hair-raising projects that could propel us into a new era of aesthetics.

His newest endeavor -- a plan to replace light fixtures with bioluminescent plants -- is no letdown in comparison.

Taking a cue from biomimicry, Roosegaarde is hoping to transform your average street-side trees into beacons of light for passersby. Like the luminescent abilities of jellyfish, mushrooms or fireflies, Roosegaarde, scientist Alexander Krichevsky and the State University of New York are all on the case, splicing DNA from luminescent marine bacteria with the chloroplast of a houseplant.

Yes, and in the not too distant future, just a year or two from now, you will be able to get wifi from the streetlights - movies, email, downloads, everything.

Everywhere you walk it will be tracking you. And you can download whatever you like. Good eh?

The downside is that as you download from the street lights, they will be sucking all the data from your mobile phone, ipad, iPod etc.

All your data in return for downloads.

How do you like them apples?

Welcome to the brave new world.

Also this Futuristic highways in the Netherlands glow in the dark

A futuristic highway that can save energy and improve road safety is set to be installed in the Netherlands by mid-2013. Two companies, Studio Roosegaarde and Heijmans Infrastructure, came up with the highway, which includes: glow-in-the-dark road markings painted with photo-luminescent paint which are charged during the day and light up during the night; temperature-responsive paint which indicates slippery roads when temperatures fall below zero; and interactive lights along the highway that light up as cars approach. Wind lights that light up using the draft produced by cars and priority induction lanes that can recharge electric cars as they run along them also feature.
The luminous road markings and weather indicating roads will debut in the Dutch province of Brabant in the middle of next year. The wind powered and interactive lights along with the induction lanes are also planned to go into service in the next years.
