Two Tickets To Paradise by Eddie Money. A song I used to sing in clubs, back in the day.

"To learn who rules over you simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize" -- Voltaire

"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."-- Eleanor Roosevelt

"Misery loves company. Wisdom has to look for it." -- Anonymous

Well found an apt article which seems to capture the spirit of the written word somewhat.

Personally I do believe some form of skillful means may provide an answer, as well as some common sense and an ability of when to be writing and when a painting.

From Plato’s Phaedrus, commenting on the invention of writing.

Here, O king, is a branch of learning that will make the people of Egypt wiser and improve their memories. My discovery provides a recipe for memory and wisdom. But the king answered and said ‘O man full of arts, the god-man Toth, to one it is given to create the things of art, and to another to judge what measure of harm and of profit they have for those that shall employ them.’
The people who invent something new, create a new tool or technology, are not necessarily the people who are going to understand what the social impact of those inventions will be.

And so it is that you by reason of your tender regard for the writing that is your offspring have declared the very opposite of its true effect. If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls. They will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks.

What you have discovered is a recipe not for memory, but for reminder. And it is no true wisdom that you offer your disciples, but only the semblance of wisdom, for by telling them of many things without teaching them you will make them seem to know much while for the most part they know nothing. And as men filled not with wisdom but with the conceit of wisdom they will be a burden to their fellows.
One thing we’re not doing as effectively today as we’ve done in the past is to learn lessons by heart. If you don’t know things with perfect recall, how can you expect to apply them?

Socrates goes on to compare a written text to a painting:
You know, Phaedrus, that is the strange thing about writing, which makes it truly correspond to painting. The painter’s products stand before us as though they were alive. But if you question them, they maintain a most majestic silence. It is the same with written words. They seem to talk to you as though they were intelligent, but if you ask them anything about what they say from a desire to be instructed they go on telling just the same thing forever.
Socrates believed that writing was not an effective means of communicating knowledge. To him, face-to-face communication was the only way one person could transmit knowledge to another.

Oh the irony of having an argument against writing in a written text.

    Enjoy,

I could not agree more vociferously, Eelco. The written word replaced memory and is easily corrupted. Thank you for bringing this Wisdom into the Tent.

Books are burned easier than the bodies that contain knowledge. Of course, both have been consigned to fires to eradicate the Wisdom of the ancestors. But, flesh feels pain while paper does not.

The question though remains. What do we do now our memories have been corrupted through the years.
As somewhat of a geek when it comes to history I see quite some value in old texts that slowly but surely are being re-discovered, painstakingly translated and then tested to see if the results match our understanding, or the promises made in these texts..

Because our memories are not what they used to be, I cannot thank Toth enough for granting us the ability to write stuff down.

My phylogenetic and past life memories have become accessible once I embraced our Creator, Gaia, the Wisdom Goddess of the Earth. I will say, it was written fragments that did stimulate the recovery. Nature abhors a vacuum. There is utility with the written word but, it has become sacrosanct and that is an error in human judgement. A sort of mind virus, in my terms.

Agreed. To see the insideous workings I only have to see my Facebook page where for years it is written there that I am a woman with her birthdate in may.

That Dallas eye is quite realistic with the vascularization and the natural flaws of the iris.

I'd like to give a hearty second to being out in/connecting with nature. We're blessed to live in a very natural setting with a stream. I love it dearly.

I've already long ago disabled the vBulletin word censor here, although I didn't announce it, so as to not invite deliberate abuse of that leniency by certain individuals who believe that swearing would be an artistic expression ─ and we've actually had such an individual here, who gratuitously swore at least once in every single sentence they wrote, and even defiantly refused to back down from that after several warnings to cease and desist.

However, while I do not agree with it being artistic, I do believe that swearing ─ in good time and place ─ is a natural form of expression that helps alleviate emotional distress, and thus, that there's a fucking place for it, goddammit.
