Did This Lost Megalithic Site in the Sahara Unlock Humanity’s First Stargazing Secrets?

Long before Stonehenge stood tall in England, an ancient civilization in the heart of the Sahara may have built the world’s first astronomical observatory. Hidden beneath the scorching sands of Egypt’s southern desert, Nabta Playa is a prehistoric site where massive stone circles align with celestial movements—suggesting that its builders were tracking the stars over 7,000 years ago. Could this forgotten structure rewrite our understanding of early astronomy?

Nabta Playa, now a desolate stretch of desert, was once a thriving oasis. Nomadic groups gathered here, drawn by seasonal water sources, leaving behind artifacts and structures that archaeologists only began to uncover in the 1970s. Among the discoveries were large sandstone slabs positioned in carefully arranged circles—eerily reminiscent of Stonehenge but built thousands of years earlier.

Archaeologists believe that the people of Nabta Playa were cattle herders who used these stones to track the movement of the Sun and anticipate the arrival of monsoon rains, vital for survival in an increasingly harsh climate.

A 1998 study of the site revealed at least three separate megalithic circles. Each consists of large, irregular sandstone blocks forming an oval space, with a rectangular slab at the center aligned along a north-south axis. The precision of these arrangements suggests they weren’t placed randomly—they likely served a purpose far beyond simple gathering spots.
