In late December, the New York Police Department sent a packet of material to the U.S. Capitol Police and the FBI. It was full of what's known as raw intelligence — bits and pieces of information that turned up by scraping various social media sites. It all indicated that there would likely be violence when lawmakers certified the presidential election on Jan. 6.

The NYPD sent the information to Washington under the assumption it would be folded into a formal intelligence bulletin by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. The FBI's version is known as a joint intelligence bulletin. The DHS produces a threat assessment. These reports are typically written as a matter of course ahead of high-profile events. Local law enforcement officials see them as actionable intelligence — an early warning system to help them prepare for incoming threats.

And yet, for last week's deadly attack on the Capitol, an event the president himself had promised would be "wild," no formal report was ever released.

A spokesperson from DHS' Office of Intelligence and Analysis confirmed that the agency didn't produce any threat assessment about the possibility of violence on Jan. 6. The FBI confirmed it didn't produce one either. Instead, DHS provided a report about the "heightened threat environment during the 2020-2021 election season, including the extent to which the political transition and political polarization are contributing to the mobilization of individuals to commit violence," the DHS spokesperson said.

    NATIONAL SECURITY

"I was surprised that we didn't receive any information" about Jan. 6, Mike Sena, president of the National Fusion Center Association, said. "We received a number of reports, but they were all regarding events all around the election cycle, you know, information sharing."

The federal government created fusion centers after the Sept. 11 attacks to improve communication and intelligence sharing among local and federal law enforcement officials. There are 80 of them across the U.S., and one of their key responsibilities is to disseminate these kinds of intelligence bulletins.

The bulletins are considered a finished product — a synthesis of validated and analyzed intelligence that helps local law enforcement make informed decisions.

Some FBI officials have said that the bureau and DHS didn't produce a bulletin for Jan. 6 out of concern that doing so might run afoul of First Amendment free speech protections that allow people to protest and assemble peacefully.

But three law enforcement officials said that this didn't stop DHS and the FBI from issuing intelligence bulletins ahead of mostly peaceful demonstrations in Portland, Ore., after the killing of George Floyd last May, before Black Lives Matter marches in Washington in early June or in anticipation of an annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America.

Given all the Sturm und Drang ahead of the Jan. 6 joint session of Congress to count the electoral votes and given all the threats on social media weeks ahead of a pro-Trump rally that morning, it struck Sena and other local law enforcement officials who spoke as strange that there wasn't a DHS-FBI report on what to expect. Threatening and planning violence aren't protected First Amendment speech.

The FBI revealed this week that its field office in Norfolk, Va., had indeed uncovered intelligence that might have helped the U.S. Capitol Police decide how to deploy its forces.

One law enforcement official confirmed that Norfolk FBI officials had found specific threats against members of Congress, an exchange of maps of the tunnel system under the Capitol complex, and gathering places in Kentucky, Pennsylvania and South Carolina where extremists were meeting before convoying up to Washington. (The Washington Post first reported the existence of the Norfolk FBI warning.)

The problem was that the threats they uncovered hadn't gone through any rigorous analysis process. "They seem to have only had a couple or single sourcing," said R.P. Eddy, a former U.S. counterterrorism official and diplomat who now runs Ergo, a private intelligence firm. "So, if you were a consumer of that intelligence and that's all you saw ... you'd say, 'Oh, it's just one source. You know, I'm not so sure I'm going to invest $2 million into extra overtime and get a bunch of new gear for my troops."

Three FBI special agents in charge around the country and four current and former DHS officials agreed that Jan. 6 was a fast-moving event that was hard to anticipate. But they also said a specific threat assessment from the FBI and DHS in the weeks before might well have persuaded Capitol Police and others to beef up security.

Eddy said if there wasn't an intelligence bulletin ahead of the pro-Trump rally, that was a problem. "If the reality is that ... neither FBI nor DHS did a threat assessment for Jan. 6, that was blinking red. If that's indeed the fact, then that's absolutely a failure of intelligence ... and weird," he said.

The head of the U.S. Capitol Police told reporters last week that he had no intelligence that suggested there would be a storming of the Capitol. DHS and FBI officials said that what he hadn't seen was a specific threat assessment report or intelligence bulletin from DHS and the FBI. A raw intelligence report a day before an event just isn't the same thing.

    "The invisible obvious"

Last week, Steven D'Antuono, the assistant director in charge of the FBI's Washington Field Office, told reporters that the FBI was working closely with its partners and that there was no indication that Jan. 6's events would turn so horribly violent. D'Antuono reversed himself this week after it became public that the Norfolk field office had indeed provided intelligence about a possible assault on the Capitol the day before the rally was set to start.

Local law enforcement partners said they felt blindsided by events because they had only a general intelligence report about unrest during the election season with which to work. Typically, raw intelligence, which is what the NYPD and Norfolk FBI provided, needs to be vetted and analyzed before it is actionable. A reporter reached out to U.S. Capitol Police asking if a federal intelligence brief about Jan. 6 would have changed its planning and has not heard back.

The Office of Intelligence and Analysis at DHS is responsible for producing these threat assessments, and it often works in concert with the FBI. The I&A Office, as it is known, has had staffing and operations problems for months, ever since the former FBI agent who ran the division, Brian Murphy, was removed from the job in August after media reports that he was compiling dossiers on journalists and protesters in Portland. Among other things, the dossiers made note of which journalists were publishing leaked documents.

The acting secretary of homeland security at the time, Chad Wolf, ordered the intelligence office to stop collecting the information on journalists and said there would be an investigation into the matter. A short time later, Murphy filed a whistleblower complaint in which he alleged that he had been told to stop reporting on Russian threats to the U.S. election in his threat assessments. He said he was told it would make President Trump look bad. His whistleblower case is still pending.

Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf resigned this week, just days after the storming of the U.S. Capitol and a little over a week before Inauguration Day.

Murphy was replaced in the fall by a longtime member of the department's general counsel's office. He was a lawyer and didn't have an analysis background. What that meant, officials said, was that one of the department's key missions — disseminating actionable threat information out to local law enforcement — was hobbled. This week, acting Secretary Wolf announced his own departure.

Against that backdrop, instead of a specific intelligence report focused on Jan. 6, the I&A Office produced something more general about demonstrations, according to a DHS spokesperson.

The National Fusion Center Association's Sena remembers seeing that report, and other local law enforcement officials contacted said they recall only that back in December there was a bulletin that focused on domestic extremists who might mobilize and create violence "in the coming months." It didn't focus on the Jan. 6 joint session of Congress, and it didn't indicate that Capitol Hill could be a target.

Some security specialists said they didn't think an intelligence report would have made much of a difference. "It was perfectly obvious, if you read the newspaper, that there was going to be a big rally, that the president was talking about ... be 'wild,' and that the focus was going to be the Capitol, where they were having a certification vote," said former Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff. "It didn't take rocket science to see if there was a realistic foreseeable risk to the Capitol and you would enhance the security."

The threat was so out in the open, Chertoff said, you didn't need the threat analysis to know what was going to happen.

A specific warning finally came from federal authorities the day before the riot at the Capitol. After the FBI field office in Virginia issued that explicit internal warning quoting an online threat that cited specific violence and an assault on the Capitol, officials convened a conference call with local law enforcement to discuss it. But by then it was too late.

By the time a warning finally came from an FBI field office in Virginia, it was too late. Less than 24 hours later, a mob would descend on the U.S. Capitol.

Eddy says in hindsight he believes the problem was something he calls "the invisible obvious" — things that sit right in front of us that we don't notice. "The reason that they are invisible to us ... gets to our biases," he said. "The situation here, I'm unfortunately quite sure we're going to find, that it was very hard for these decision-makers and these analysts to realize that people who look just like them could want to commit this kind of unconstitutional violence and could literally try to and want to kill them."

This was supposed to be a pro-Trump rally, until it wasn't.

"Foe look differently, foe act differently, say different things," Eddy said. "They don't have the same bumper stickers. They don't have the same yellow flag of 'Don't Tread on Me.' It was hard for them to see that the law-and-order hierarchy in which they were born and bred ... where they got their paycheck, was inciting the mob that was going to commit the violence that was indeed the foe, not the friend."

This Sunday, the FBI formally warned local law enforcement that armed protests were being planned for all 50 statehouses and the U.S. Capitol. The warning also said an unidentified group was calling on others to help it "storm" state, local and federal courthouses should Trump be removed as president before Inauguration Day. In Washington, the secretary of the Army announced that as many as 20,000 National Guard troops are expected to be deployed with guns.

There are assumptions, but they will manifest as realities before it is all said and done.

Partially yes, but my intellect and intuition rarely fail me, my good friend Mr. Aianawa.

And there most certainly was violence too, as well as an attempt to capture and publicly execute Mike Pence and Nancy Pelosi — who to the best of my knowledge still qualify as politicians and who were present in the building when the mob forced its way in, albeit that they were safely escorted off the premises by security.

Trump's responsibility in all of this, albeit disputed, is that (1) he was the one who invited all of his followers over, and that (2) he did nothing within his legal power nor within his power as the Messiah of that far-right mob to stop them, even after his former coworkers pleaded with him to intervene. He wanted it to happen, because he did not (and still does not) accept his electoral defeat.
Unfortunately there's hundreds of eyewitness and video accounts that show otherwise, including Capital Police escorting protestors through the Capital. There is no evidence that any of the protestors made it to the alleged underground tunnels. I agree that Trump invited his followers over to the Capital grounds. The Capital building itself has doors that cannot be opened or breeched from the outside. But Trump did ask them to go the Capital peacefully. And I also agree he left them out to dry. He could have pardoned all of them before he left office. But he didn't. Recently he's now made motions and statements declaring how much the J6'ers mean to him since he has a serious opponent for the primary. This is news to me. There's been no evidence, or even an interview with J6ers or family in the last two years and now suddenly he has a warm relationship with them.

I'm looking at the physical evidence presented, not tenuous plots from the least reliable and most swampy agency that most recently had the public stirred up with Weather balloons. All information that mysteriously cannot be tried or heard nor has even seen the swipe of a RICO act brush but rumored and hear sayed. People want to attack the argument because they think I'm defending Trump. I'm not. I find people with Trump Derangement Syndrome pretty much the same as those who are in the Trump Cult. All composed of personal bias and passion. Thin line between love and hate. Neither of them can see anything clearly and both are obsessed with plots and plans and fluff that never materialize into any substance but in the media. J 6ers are held without charges for a reason.

The 'evidence' presented that J6 was an organized plot would be enough to jail Trump forever but the focus remains on charges that he's already been acquitted of so I cannot overlook the lack of seriousness on the part of those who think some organized plot was afoot on such a large scale. The accusers are not taking the rumors of organized plots seriously so I won't either.

Trump was never as bad as the TDS people made him out to be nor as good as his Cult Members claim him to be.

In the last two years I've come to suspect he's a red herring, meant to deceive both sides of the issue, a sort of fifth column to keep his lovers and detractors all wound up with love and hate and hopium. And I see evidence of that everyday.

In the bigger global picture, its incongruent that so many people across the world insist that the US government is a destructive malign entity, and it is, and everyone would be better off if it was disappeared into a permanent circular file but the idea of the American people overthrowing their oppressive, destructive government is an outrage as well.

Curious then who should put an end to the US Gov regime?

Tut and Tsk. The anti Trumpers are perfectly entitled to their own Qanon-esque plots and conspiring as much as the Pro Trumpers.

    Hi Boids,

The text of your posts goes to the heart of the point I was making above to Aianawa.

The truth is, I would argue that the U.S. government is not malign enough for the people that stormed the Bastille on January 6th. The U.S. right has for centuries tried to pull the government towards malignancy but as yet have failed. And that is what the internal struggle is about. Octupus Garden has made the point that there are two perspectives to consider. The first is the helicopter view and the second is on the ground. We live the policies and practices of our government. We can judge for ourselves what factions of power produce minimally invasive approaches and which produce maximally abhorrent approaches. I have made my perspective obvious for years here on the One Truth. In my bean there is absolutely no doubt.

At what point, after Ukraine and initializing WW3 with Russia and China will it become malign enough to be worthy of dissolution? Only when there's a Republican in office? That US global domination and destruction is okay when an Obama, Clinton, FDR or LBJ are in office? The liberals are not going to overthrow the government. They will go burn down their own communities and federal buildings safe in the knowledge they will be protected from prosecution but who are they hurting--their own communities.

Not sure how people can keep insisting the right and left are wings of the same bird but still maintain one wing is still absolutely more good, moral and loving than the other.

In American common law, in its whole and uncorrupted state, we have a series of checks and balance. That basically means some form of liberalism and some form of conservatism must exist at all levels to keep things balanced. It is the same concept as keeping the divine masculine and feminine in check.

The hidden hand bird government with its contentious shit stirring wings has the same concept. To prevent obvious exposure of its corruption it also must have a right and left to keep things in check so the entity remains safe. But its still the same entity.

Take into consideration my observations of the left and right. I'm rather more conservative fiscally and socially liberal. My perspective is that right should have a healthy respect for economics and fiscal responsibility of the nation. They've always been rather stagnant in terms of social reform because it sometimes treads dangerously near to fascism and communism as social justice is an imbedded belief in all socialist, fascist and communist regimes which no longer means power to the worker but reducing everyone down to the lowest common denominator. We can all starve and stagger under massive amounts of government debt and induced poverty but we'll all be equal. That's pathological. It's not justice in any way shape or form. Not all equality is good.

Unfortunately as far as the conservatives who sit around paralyzed into stagnation just allows those two elements to creep in so fear of doing something that might be construed as progressive fiscally like the concept of a quantum economy and a quantum currency must be shrunk from instead of explored. However, Democrats are notoriously not good at taking on anything with teeth. I'm not sure why. Every city in America that is run democratically is in distress because the checks and balance system is not allowed but total power must be held by the left. This ensures the further decay of America.

There not longer exists a liberalism concerned with everyone being equal under the eyes of the law, its now involved itself in preying on children, child mutilation, trafficking, declaring all parents unfit simply for being parents, pornography in schools, further dumbing down schools, loosening requirments into all jobs for diversity hire, no reason or logic or math, just hysteria, emotional arrest, violence, reparations for crimes never committed to people who were never victims, and out in the open and observable mass money laundering scheme. Everything and everyone is racist and unfair like roads, food seasonings, colors, English, Math and nearly all STEM programs. Making up petty problems and trying to solve them by putting an entire society on trial isn't justice. Acceptance by force isn't acceptance. You can't force people to like each other not liking each other was never a crime anyway morally or legally. YOu can't force a marriage minded family man he must date a woman with a penis but those people are being criminalized as haters so they cannot plan their own futures or families without being accused of transphobia. It's getting increasingly difficult to like the people the left puts forward as heroes like luggage stealing officials and crack addict criminals who are above the law and in no way equal to others. While conservatives stagnate the left is all too busy but not doing anything that helps people EQUALLY.

Not sure how this makes them better than the right who is more than likely has numerous members involved or at least tacitly in agreement with what are crimes against society, instead of justice? And no one can explain how that is better. It's not compassionate, its not noble, its not high minded, it doesn't serve society; it only serves the people who wallow in their own emotional arrest.

I'll refer to another post I believe posted by you. About whole scale revenge and vengeance. Which is what we see perpetrated upon the people today by their own government which is predominantly left.

Those you cited inherited right wing bids for power. FDR only conceded, after refusing for a very long time (in terms of wars) to engage and only when it was nearly unanimous among the American public that going to war was their mandate. Obama continued because the right would not let him try to engage in peace. Have you forgotten so soon? Barack "Hussein" Obama.

As one lady so eloquently stated and with great fervor I might add: "I don't give a good goddamn if we burn down 'our' community, We own nothing, nothing."

Truth is truth, perspective is perspective. One is correct and all the others are wrong. I'm always correct. If you don't realize that yet, you will, just hang around.

Mmmm Boidsey, boidsey, feel your correct, Chuckie and myself have other ends of the table , cult problems or at least programming glitches lol, a now gone member called Dreamtimer was given a vid around event 201 explaining the planned pandemic or other side of table, planning the pandemic, she watched and could not see anything of substance of my sayings or vid content, that realllly moved me, so i bought it back to myself and said , mmmm Verney old chap, but but n butt i could not go there, mass confusion as usualllly i could, so i thought n felt into why i could not. Reply was something very ugly to print here, hopelessly silly even nowadays, a triple set up, a lose lose lose situation, for both of us, how to transmute this appeared impossible but always there be a win win or win win win in this case. We were on course to both hold our view, narrative, belief and one would be thrown within greatly sooner or later because in these times of great transmutation of energies past future n present, we i god nature wins, so soul is the instirrgator n precurser plus happy judge, aaaaah happy judge is the key, happy here is happy there is happy there , eggy chicken keys. Giving once you die, you get it, the big pic, and it all ( the here on Earth, drama's , love n loves etc ) does not matter once not here, you gone to beautifullll energy-ies again and all is fine and fined sunny in soul world, our home, so Dreamy and myself will find heaven on Earth as that is our desire, both us stated this that.
So how does ones and we all have one, Wile E Coyote win ourselves, not define but win as we have already onewon-now so soul is cause n leader boss so now is winning knowing as knowing is winning now, yip won now n now won. So gut heart n soul here n there mind trio often have the higher self or etc dancing in the heaven rain when we crumble to who we are not, here, when we open the gut-mind-heart or begin anew, or mmm you get the picture , so where are we at ?

Being greatly hated and greatly loved is a large facet of one who has won the now won won now, lol the greatly loving ones have now to love themselves ( which great master has created the most masters ? ) n other end of table the haters who now have presented a narrative not theirs, of the set up, Osho did so well for their times, Buhdey amazingly, Matt Kahn doin well ( went off him few moons ago, maybe because of Kryon circle of 12 data, unsure ) , means little, just getting to now won won now is the simple heaven here journey, yes imo playing with the future is key with extra keys available once coyote is inner friendly and roadrunner empathic.

Either way, QED. I rest my case, Your Honor.

We will never see an actual American progressive Democrat in office any more than an actual conservative with means or a plan will be there. The DNC wouldn't allow it anymore than the RNC.
