I remember reading about this Great White attack out in California just a few weeks back. Here's that lucky survivor in his own words. I wonder what kind of ongoing nightmares such survivors must suffer from. That's gotta be something deeply personal I would imagine...

This was a lucky find. The U.S. Navy followed a centuries old maritime tradition in the West of hazing inexperienced crew members, in the navy's case they call it the "Shellback Initiation", and it happened to anyone who had yet to sail across the equator. If you've already done it you're a "shellback", if you haven't, you're a "polywog". The shellbacks are fully in charge on this day.

This is actual footage of the day I became a shellback back in late '93 aboard the aircraft carrier USS America, off the coast of Somalia. We had been cruising up and down the coast for 50 straight days in support of the aftermath of the infamous "Blackhawk Down" incident, so everyone was pretty wound up tight going that long without a port of call on what was dubbed "Groundhog Station" named after the movie "Groundhog Day", so it was a real blast to cut loose out on the flight deck like that. It's good to be young!

They don't do that any more in this age of political correctness, and yes it definitely was hazing no two ways about it, but nobody was forced to do it. Regardless of rank, if you opted out, you spent the day in the dark dingy anchor room, and of course were pretty much considered a pussy.

So anyway here it is, the camera didn't happen to catch the 27 year old version of myself groveling through all that gross shit, but it sure did bring back some memories. Those are moments in time you don't forget. I still have that little card they used to give you as being recognized an official "Rusty Crusty Shellback".

This is one of the most hair raising wingsuit jumps I've ever seen. Just one tiny misjudgment and it's lights out. One hell of a ground rush on this one they're really pushing it!
