This is an older video ─ 4 years old, to be precise ─ but considering that we're talking about bass gear, I wanted to post this one too.

This particular Rickenbacker model has always been one of my favorites ─ ever since my teenage years ─ and it has also always been fairly popular among professionals, albeit not quite as popular as the Fender Precision Bass and the Fender Jazz Bass. But Paul McCartney used to use one of these, as did Lemmy of Motörhead, as did Geddy Lee of Rush ─ he had/has several of them, actually.

Not really a music gear video ─ although there's some discussion of gear near the end of the video ─ but Richard Bona is one of the jazz world's most famous and most talented bass players.

Guitar of the Day: 1979 Fender Stratocaster
I have played many a 1970s Stratocaster in my time ─ and all of them were finished in black and fitted with black plastic parts ─ and I've always liked them, except for one thing: the three-screw bolt-on construction. It was a new type of neck fit for all Fender electrics in the 1970s, with three screws attaching the neck to the body and two smaller MicroTilt screws for adjusting the neck angle.

The construction was very unstable, and the neck would start wiggling from left to right in its socket after a while, causing all kinds of intonation and action issues, and requiring a periodic fastening of the screws. Fender eventually abandoned the design and went back to a four-screw neck joint in 1981, albeit retaining the MicroTilt adjustment screws. Music Man ─ a company started by Leo Fender and later sold to Ernie Ball ─ went the other way; all modern bolt-on Music Man guitars have five screws holding the neck to the body.

What I did very much like about the 1970s-era Strats were the five-way pickup selector switch and the larger headstock with the curved "Stratocaster" logo ─ not only does it look cool, but the extra wood mass also enhances the tone and the sustain ─ as well as the flatter fingerboard radius. Earlier Stratocasters had a 7.5" fingerboard radius, which I found uncomfortable, but the 1970s-era Strats had the (currently still used) 9.5" fingerboard radius.

In addition to that, whereas Fender had always set up the vibrato bridges as non-floating in the 1950s and 1960s ─ meaning that you could only bend down, not up ─ the vibrato bridges on 1970s Strats were set up as floating, and they were quite stable for a non-locking unit. Of course, that's still not enough for the kinds of pyrotechnics Eddie Van Halen was pulling out of his sleeves, but this in turn led to the creation of the Floyd Rose whammies, with EVH being one of the very first guitarists to put a Floyd on his Frankenstrat ─ which was actually not a Fender, but a guitar he himself had built from a Charvel body and spare parts, with a Gibson PAF humbucker in the bridge position, no pickup in the middle position, and a non-connected Strat pickup in the neck position.

Either way, the Stratocaster was created in 1954, and even now today, 68 years later, it is still a timelessly modern and beautiful design that has been copied and imitated by loads and loads of other manufacturers. It was the first ever solid-body electric guitar to feature three pickups, and the first ever guitar ─ solid-body electric or otherwise ─ to feature a double cutaway, a vibrato bridge, and ergonomic body contouring (on both the front and the back).

As popular as the Broadcaster/Telecaster/Esquire had been up until then ─ and with the very first (and at the time still flawed) Gibson Les Paul having been officially introduced only two years earlier ─ the 1954 Stratocaster in its original two-tone translucent sunburst finish on an ash body with a white pickguard blew everyone away. It became the shape and the look that everyone would think of when you asked them to picture an electric guitar. And even today, it remains the best selling electric guitar in the world, with the Gibson Les Paul as a close second.

Leo Fender was a genius, and even Les Paul ─ himself having been a Gibson player throughout almost all of his career ─ acknowledged that. In a phone call with Eddie Van Halen, Les reportedly said: "There's only three people in the world who know how to build an electric guitar: you, me, and Leo Fender."
