This series of books by Vernor Vinge delves into the idea of the "Singularity' regarding AI superintelligences. Two quotes really stuck with me from these books, paraphrasing:
Question: "If you [AI] have the ability to evolve and leave the human race behind as an artifact of prehistoric intelligence, why don't you?"
Answer: "Why do you believe that we don't have a sense of humor?"
"If AI is advanced enough, its algorithmic decision-making can appear thoughtful and even empathetic."
If AI is used experimentally as in side systems that run in parallel with the 'real' world, it can make sense. Scientific exploration is, after all, what essentially drives humanity. But to give it precedence before it is sophisticated enough to make the correct assumptions and decisions 99.99999 percent of the time is madness.
