    Hi OG,

I think Aragorn is trying to be diplomatic to avoid World War IV.

Hi Chuckie, That makes sense. Thank you. Mods have to be Switzerland. I have been away for ages, too, so failed to appreciate the fact that so much of this has been talked to death already.

Ukraine War: Israel says Lavrov's Hitler remarks 'unforgivable'

Israel has called Sergei Lavrov's remarks "unforgivable" after he claimed Hitler "had Jewish origins" during an interview.

He also claimed "some of the worst antisemites are Jews".

Lavrov's comments came as he hit out at the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, saying his "ancestry doesn't mean anything" while trying to justify Vladimir Putin's call to "denazify" the nation.

It will be interesting to see how things will unfold during the spring and summer. In June Finland and Sweden might declare that we will join NATO, who knows how it will affect things in the long run. I'm sure it would annoy Putin a lot though because generally Sweden and Finland have been seen as quite neutral countries and now we are taking a stance too. How about other countries in the region? All in all it's just a very unfortunate situation and it certainly isn't bringing any more stability to the world which already is quite chaotic.

Ukraine: Russia using ‘missile terrorism’ in wide attacks

Complaining that the West is “stuffing Ukraine with weapons,” Russia bombarded railroad stations and other supply-line targets across the country, as the European Union moved to further punish Moscow for the war Wednesday by proposing a ban on oil imports.

Heavy fighting also raged at the Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol that represented the last stronghold of Ukrainian resistance in the ruined southern port city, according to the mayor. But a Russian official denied Moscow’s troops were storming the plant, as Ukrainian commanders claimed a day earlier.

The Russian military said it used sea- and air-launched missiles to destroy electric power facilities at five railway stations across Ukraine, while artillery and aircraft also struck troop strongholds and fuel and ammunition depots.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba accused Russia of “resorting to the missile terrorism tactics in order to spread fear across Ukraine.”

Air raid sirens sounded in cities across the country on Wednesday night, and attacks were reported near Kyiv, the capital; in Cherkasy and Dnipro in central Ukraine; and in Zaporizhzhia in the southeast. In Dnipro, authorities said a rail facility was hit. Videos on social media suggested a bridge there was attacked.

There was no immediate word on casualties or the extent of the damage.

The flurry of attacks comes as Russia prepares to celebrate Victory Day on May 9, marking the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany. The world is watching for whether Russian President Vladimir Putin will use the occasion to declare a victory in Ukraine or expand what he calls the “special military operation.”
Ukraine war: Russia denies it plans to declare war on 9 May

Moscow has up until now denied it is at war, instead referring to the invasion as a "special military operation".

But Western officials have speculated that President Vladimir Putin could use the 9 May Victory Parade to announce an escalation of military action.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, however, said there was no truth to the rumours "at all".

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said last week that the Moscow parade - commemorating the defeat of the Nazis and end of World War Two - might be used to drum up support for a mass mobilisation of troops and renewed push into Ukraine.

"I would not be surprised, and I don't have any information about this, that he is probably going to declare on this May Day that 'we are now at war with the world's Nazis and we need to mass mobilise the Russian people'," he told LBC radio.

Russian officials only refer to the invasion as a "special military operation" to "demilitarise" or "de-Nazify" the country, referencing a baseless claim about Nazis in the Ukrainian government which Moscow used to justify the invasion.

As well as the annual parade in Moscow, there are also long-standing reports that the Kremlin is planning some sort of additional parade in the city of Mariupol in southern Ukraine, almost all of which is now under Russian control. Ukrainian forces remain in one area of the city - a vast industrial steelworks called Azovstal.

Latest reports suggest that after the recent successful evacuation of some civilians, attacks on the steelworks have resumed and contact has been lost with the last remaining soldiers inside.

Ukrainian officials say the streets of the city centre are being cleared of debris, bodies, and unexploded bombs. Large parts of the city lie in ruins, after Russian forces bombarded it relentlessly for weeks under siege.

Ukrainian politician Alyona Shkrum told the BBC she was expecting things to become more difficult alongside Russia's victory day celebrations.

"For Putin and for the empire he's trying to build, basically this is a symbolic day, right?" she said.

"So he takes some kind of victory day and he turns it into a big fight right now against Nazis, which is obviously Russian propaganda and completely ridiculous.

"We are expecting that there will be quite tough times here in Kyiv and in Odesa and in Mariupol, and in other cities for 9 May."

At the risk of stating the obvious, there is only one person who can be absolutely sure of how Russia plans to mark its annual Victory Day on 9 May and that is Vladimir Putin. And he is keeping his cards close to his chest.

Moscow's denial that it plans to declare war that day need to be taken with a hefty pinch of salt.

In the days leading up to the invasion on 24 February Russian officials queued up to ridicule suggestions of an imminent invasion as "western hysteria and propaganda". Yet invade they did, catching even many Ukrainians by surprise.

So the very least we can expect is some triumphant announcements of objectives achieved and enemies (real or imagined) vanquished.

Blame for the slow pace of Russian advance in the eastern Donbas region will likely be placed on Nato and there will probably be further warnings to the West to stop helping Ukraine defend itself.

Whatever happens on 9 May it is hard to see this war ending any time soon.

LIFE IN KYIV TODAY: 2 Months Since the War Started

    Johnny FD

Restaurants, cafes, stores are all slowly opening again in Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine. Life has changed here, but continues to go on. People need to walk their dogs, socialize, eat, and go to work. Here's what life looks like now, 2 months after the war started, in both the city center as well as the "sleeping districts" of the left bank.

Well, Gio, that's a video no-one expected when this thread was started. But none of this has played out as expected, has it?

And what do we know about Patrushev? Other than that he's still alive, therefore has been going along with Putin. Does he believe in the mission, whatever it's morphed into? Does he have his own vision? Is he another 'acolyte' of Ilyin and Dugin?

I guess I'll have to look into him now.

This doesn't justify Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but their invasion was a reaction to US imperialism. The US seeks to dominate militarily and economically over the rest of the world. This imperialism is used to impose capitalism and economic dominance onto the world with US military dominance, ever since the end of world war 2. Now they have achieved the
Russia's invasion is a reaction to this.
This is also behind the US and the media going against China, they see China as a threat to the global capitalistic order they have established.
There are many right wingers which claim to be against the establishment, and yet they are in favor of capitalism and US imperialism which are what the establishment want.

The war in Ukraine has entered a new stage. As villagers around Kiyv emerge from a month-long occupation, telling stories of war crimes, Putin’s army is pummeling the East of the country. The Donbas region has been hit with constant shelling, making civilian evacuations deadly.

VICE News travelled to Donbas to witness the evacuation of civilians in the encircled town of Severodonetsk, and the impossible choice civilians hiding in shelters have to make: stay and risk being buried alive, or leave everything behind.

This Russian-speaking region of Ukraine presents a more challenging battleground, one where Ukraine must contend with enemies from within, indoctrinated by the Russian neighbor’s influence. VICE News followed police investigators in their painstaking task of discerning friend from foe in a battleground where the stakes couldn’t be higher.

What are your views now and how have they evolved when it comes to your views on capitalism? I have become much more anti capitalistic recently, and become more in favor of systems which benefit everyone.

It is indeed a matter of blind radicalization, akin to football/soccer hooliganism. "Our club is the best, the elite, and everyone else is a <fill in a random expletive here>." And their club isn't even theirs, because they're just fans, not players.

But it runs deeper still, and it ties in with the reason why we are now looking at a whole generation of daycare-raised kids who don't have any values and who know no respect, namely the fact that the financial-economically driven society model breeds opportunists and rewards arrogance and sociopathy. The whole western society model is very, very sick to the core.
People have become so radicalized to have a knee jerk reaction to anything which questions the capitalistic system that they live in, because of pro capitalistic propaganda. They can't even see the obvious that is right in front of them. They don't realize that they and society as a whole does not benefit from this system, and that change would lead to a better system. The amount of consumerism in western culture is a large part of how people have not seen the problems with capitalism.

Americans especially tend to be very brainwashed into believing that capitalism is a great thing.

You know, the myth about The American Dream. The American exceptionalism as Aragorn says.

Capitalism might be the best system we have, but it's still a shitty system. When you say that it doesn't mean that one would be in favor of communism either, not the versions we've had here anyways. At least in Europe there is some sense with the financial systems, especially so in Scandinavia where we have social democracies, but in USA crony capitalism has been crazy and has only gotten even more out of hand during the past few decades. As the last great true leader of America ever had famously said; "This country has socialism for the rich, and rugged individualism for the poor."

Personally I also find it sickening that how much money is spent on warfare and weapons which are used to destroy lives instead of helping and healing people who would really need that aid, both in America and in other countries too. Also public healthcare shouldn't be dictated by corporations at all.

Chris Hedges lays out the truth succinctly here.
