When I did a general search for mead all the results came up without the 'e'.

I used to live in Laurel, MD, not far from Fort Meade. No doubt that spelling became embedded in my mind.

I spent years thinking sherbet had a second 'r'. I wrote and spoke it that way.

I have no excuse. I studied french. Sorbet. Sherbet. No second 'r's'.
