Could be a long trial, gauging by this but everyone needs to know and discover the truth, as both sides say.

It was a lost cause, Aianawa ... Repubs are willfully blind (they love their families AND their POWER) and the Dems got some business to attend to.

Strictly speaking this wasn't a coup (attempt), merely an insurrection, and a pretty spontaneous and leaderless one at that. Trump even didn't stand by the insurrectionists...

In order for this to have been a coup a significant portion of the military and /or police would have had to support it, which clearly wasn't the case.

Interestingly, I saw a lot of parallels with Hungary in 2006, when protests against the ruling socialist government, on the anniversary of the 1956 revolution, took a turn to the bizarre and the protesters ended up storming the state TV station building and one protester even commandeered a tank (a museum piece, but still) and drove it around for extra visual brownie points.

That episode, more precisely, the communist-lite overreaction to it in terms of police tactics led to the downfall of the socialists and the Left losing all credibility for a generation. They still haven't recovered from that fiasco, which is why we have a hard-right government that's pretty much unremovable at this point, for lack of any decent alternatives.

With a bit of hindsight, I think the Capitol Hill riots were blown all out of proportion, I simply don't buy the "fascist / right-wing coup narrative.

I do ... but I got it figured out now:

The Repubs are playing the game like the masters they are. They understand the authoritarian mind like no other.

They knew it wasn't necessary for them to react to Trump's insanity, they obviously have used it to their own advantage in significant ways. Perhaps they are a little too Machiavellian for their own good, though.

The civil justice system will deal with Trump's crimes and if his followers insist on facing off with the SWAT teams, civilian police forces, and if necessary the National Guard armed with lethal force. They can but it wouldn't look good for them. We know these MAGA soldiers have heavy firepower as the drug wars in Mexico have civilian police battling with the drug cartels and often the civilians are outgunned. It is also a well-documented fact that the cartels get their arms from the United States. The U.S. civilian forces will not have that problem as they have access to military armories. It might be exciting to watch as long as I've got plenty of popcorn in the cupboard and a good TV connection.

Witnesses would have been good. But the overwhelming evidence put out by the seditious crowd itself was already more than enough.

'Shoot Nancy', 'Hang Pence', 'We're here by Trump's invitation', etc. Trump's words, including the 'go in peace' stuff. Taken in context, it's the kind of cover your ass thing criminals do and didn't give him an out at all.

But of course, Republicans had to hide behind procedure because who really cares about principals?

And those...who feared that Trump might actually pull off a military coup—Nope. The conditions and internal organization of the military are nothing like what would be required.

Another four years of Trump, however, might have made that possible. The deterioration of democratic norms and consensus in the States is scary.

    Cassidy, in his own words:

"I voted to convict former President Trump because he is guilty. That's what the facts demand," Cassidy wrote in the Baton Rouge Advocate. "I have no illusions that this is a popular decision. I made this decision because Americans should not be fed lies about 'massive election fraud.' Police should not be left to the mercy of a mob. Mobs should not be inflamed to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power."

Nonetheless, within hours of casting his vote, the Louisiana GOP voted unanimously to censure him. Yes, that would be the same party that refused to censure former KKK grand wizard David Duke in 1989 when he was a state rep. Only the best people!

Throughout the trial, the Democratic impeachment managers presented overwhelming evidence of Trump’s criminal culpability, his incitement of the January 6th assault on the U.S. Capitol. Their case was clear: for months, Trump sought to undermine, then reverse, a national election, and, when he ran out of options, after he was thwarted by various state election officials and the courts, he proved willing to see the lives of his own Vice-President, the Speaker of the House, and other members of Congress endangered so that he might retain power.

There is a long history of violence against democratic processes and voters in America: in the eighteen-fifties, nativist gangs like the Plug Uglies set out to intimidate immigrant voters; in the eighteen-seventies, white Southerners formed “rifle clubs” and attacked Black voters to hasten the end of Reconstruction. But this event was unique in U.S. history. This mob was inspired by a President.

    "It's all about control."

When folks say that, sadly, they're usually not talking about the suppression of votes, one of the most important kinds of speech.

    The fundamental danger:

“[Trump] truly made his base believe that the only way he could lose was if the election was rigged,” Joaquin Castro said during one of his trial speeches. “And, Senators, all of us know, and all of us understand how dangerous that is for our country. Because the most combustible thing you can do in a democracy is convince people an election doesn’t count, that their voice and their vote don’t count, and that it’s all been stolen—especially if what you’re saying are lies.”

Raskin paused and went on, telling me, “Look, Trump’s motivation was clear. He wanted to prolong and delay the certification of the Electoral College votes in hopes of putting so much pressure on the Vice-President and Congress that we would cave. And then the President would try to force the election into the House of Representatives, where each state delegation would have one vote and the Republicans have a majority of the states. All of his concentration was on thwarting the count so that the Vice-President would be forced to say there’s a need for a contingent election. That is what the President had in mind, and he came dangerously close to succeeding. And at that point he could also have decried the chaos and declared martial law.”
One person I know thought that martial law would last 'for a couple weeks'.

How wondrously naive. I'm sure the fictional folks from a galaxy far, far away thought Palpatine would do as he promised and give up power.

Of course, Trump never even made such a promise, did he?

What’s become evident is that Republican members of Congress fear not only the indignity of losing a primary; some have come to fear the potential for violence among their constituents. Rather than persuade, resist, or prosecute such people, they placate them. To do so, they bow in the direction of Palm Beach.
    Such painfully exquisite irony.
