    From Empty Wheel

    October 31:

Let’s start with the unexpected heroics of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) which disclosed in a very early Saturday morning court filing that Donald Trump was trying to block release of 750 documents out of 1600 identified and requested by the House’s January 6 commission during its investigation — documents over which Joe Biden as the current president chose not to exert privilege.

The commission also filed a brief supporting its position that Trump as the former president does not have the authority to claim executive privilege over Trump administration documents sought by the commission.

You’ve likely read POLITICO’s report — the tl;dr [too long, didn't read] version is Kyle Cheney’s Twitter thread describing NARA’s filing.

What boggles the mind is how Trump has tipped his hand as to which documents are most damning.

The cherry on top is NARA’s filing which details Steve Bannon’s role in the seditious conspiracy to incite rebellion and insurrection.
U.S. National Archives — which has knowledge of content of Trump White House records and which could've chosen many different examples to show specific and relevant information sought by @January6thCmte— notably highlights allegations involving Steve Bannon-Trump.

Now add the claim reported today in Salon that Michael Flynn may have conspired to extort performance from Pennsylvania GOP elected officials in order to reseat Trump in the White House.

What’s deeply concerning about this plot is the possible involvement of foreign entities:

… Because of his intelligence background, Stern claims at least two people representing a Flynn-linked group called “Patriot Caucus” approached him earlier this year after a speech with an offer to hire his firm to gather “dirt” on officials and recruit others to assist in the plot. At one point, one of the men allegedly told Stern that they had retained the services of active intelligence officials “both domestic and foreign.” …
This sounds very much like something Flynn would do based on his past record of involvement with foreign agents.

Stern was also encouraged to achieve the ends desired using violence if necessary — “accomplish the mission even if you have to use domestic terrorism” — which he found very disturbing.

    More to come...

Today's moral: Never underestimate the enemy.

There are sources in OSINT, Open Source Intelligence, who are working on finding those who orchestrated the insurrection. In America we have Sedition Hunters, and there is Bellingcat based in the Netherlands (which has been around for a while).

This comment is from someone likely in the American crew.

Let me be really blunt about this:

It was a f***ing brilliant op. Really.

Trump was only notionally in charge. Bannon was the architect & engineer, or the mastermind as it were, and he should not be underestimated just because he subscribes to quack theories of history.

Flynn has serious .mil background and was head of DIA for a while, and as with Bannon, just because he believes a huge hunk of horse shit doesn’t mean he can't plan & execute. Manafort has done his share of covert ops overseas.

Stephen Miller is a soulless sociopath, Eastman a self-interested actor, the two of them having the detachment needed to get beyond ideology to action.

    Never underestimate the enemy.

These people put together a truly impressive hybrid warfare attack that by all canonical measures should have succeeded.

That it failed is not a testimony to their own failings.

It was a testimony to the fact that at the end of the day, a sufficient number of people each did their small part to resist or refuse to play, that the whole thing collapsed, one piece at a time. Even Dan Quayle.

Arguably even Billy Barr found that treason (by the strict definition) left a bad taste in his mouth, so he resigned rather than ‘go there.’

The autocoup collapsed slowly enough that each additional component had to be brought into play until all angles were revealed, and at last it came down to attempting to abduct, or facilitate the abduction of, the sitting Vice President.

So on one hand the institutions held. But on the other hand, we quite literally came within a few words not spoken, a football’s throw of distance, and a minute at most of time, of losing it ALL.

And we are nowhere near out of the woods yet.

Is it any wonder that folks want to focus on the trial of Kyle, or the CRT of fairyland, or the Sesames of the Street?

They got a lot to run away from and sweep under the big fat rug.

Factual, in the court records, minorly displayed in mainstream media, proven beyond question plus now an investigation into the finger pointers ( think n feel Inversion ) because there may be actual Russian collusion from them, funny old world NAPBOB, fact check yourself before or after moiself though, to make sure.

Ps may have to take a thread or two out of hoax section but also okay with doubly triply fourissyy downing.

That's a not-sequitur. The folks who broke into the Capitol, damaged and stole property, shat and pissed in our House, and then were nicely escorted out don't have anything to do with Russia or claims of collusion.

They have said themselves that it was 'a Revolution', they were 'storming the Capitol' and that their leader, Trump, 'invited them'.

They were responding to the lies trumpeted by Trump about a stolen election without any evidence.

60 failed court cases and folks from Trump's own party telling him that there was no evidence of fraud didn't matter to them.

Republicans don't give a shit. They're still passing laws to make it harder to vote because they've failed to win hearts and minds of the American people.

They're reduced to lies, grift, gerrymandering and voter suppression.

    It's pathetic and they're weak.

Not even, Aianawa. The 'fraud' was predictable and mathematically calculated BEFORE the election. Lightning will strike a voting booth first and then 'voter fraud' will swing an election. No matter how hard the right tries to employ cheating to win an election they never get away with it because the preventive measures are too good.

More and more is coming out every day. I couldn't post it all here. Records of Trump calling the 'Command Center' at the Ritz on the day of the insurrection are now in the hands of investigators.

The Ritz. Man of the people? Not for a day in his life. Golden toilets, silver spoons, and millions from daddy. And folks think this guy should be the face of revolution. Dear God.

Get your popcorn out folks. The new year is upon us and the show is about to enter the next act. There will be more public testimony. You may recall the police officers who testified last year about their experiences defending the Capital and confronting the violent mob.

There were other 'special forces' around.

Beau talked about these forces last year. I haven't listened to that video yet. I will be shortly.

These forces are in the news this week, likely because some stuff is going to be coming out in the hearings.

Lots of good quotes in this one.

Edit: Beau didn't make a video, he tweeted about it. So I'm going to see if I can find the tweets.

    @MuellerSheWrote
So during “russiagate” I was labeled an “alarmist”, and during the insurrection investigation, I was labeled “hope porn”. Thank you to everyone who trusted me. It’s been weird.
Beau called it coup a year ago. This video is from this week:

    Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6zjigTxfQ4

Trump may have been directly involved in planning the Overturn attempt afterall (also know as the “Green Bay Sweep” by the Coup-insiders). If this DRAFT LETTER FROM POTUS ever sees the light of day. From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

According to a letter from [Bernard] Kerik’s attorney, the document is called “DRAFT LETTER FROM POTUS TO SEIZE EVIDENCE IN THE INTEREST OF NATIONAL SECURITY FOR THE 2020 ELECTIONS” — and it’s believed to have been written on Dec. 17, 2020. That was a critical time for the Trump insiders who were accelerating their schemes to deny the presidency to Biden, even after the Democrat won 7 million more popular votes and the Electoral College by a 306-232 margin.
A proposed “National Emergency” letter is completely in sync with last month’s bombshell revelation of a 38-page PowerPoint presentation that circulated among Trump’s inner circle and their allies in Congress just before Jan. 6. The PowerPoint laid out a scenario in which Trump would declare “a National Security Emergency” as a pretense to invalidate electronic voting and possibly prompt lawmakers to award electoral votes to the incumbent president in states that he’d in reality lost.
Those Willard War Room conversations must've been pretty darn interesting...

Steve Bannon is openly praising the idea of a coup, because why not? It seems that Trump and others believe that if you announce your crimes out loud they're somehow magically not crimes anymore.

    From Empty Wheel:

Dunbar’s number is a term that describes a presumed cognitive limit to the number of people with whom an individual can maintain social relationships. It’s a way of thinking about limits to our ability to understand a network. People argue about what the actual number is, though 150 is a good standard.

Using that figure, the number of people arrested in the January 6 attack is, thus far, 4 2/3 Dunbar numbers, with two more Dunbar numbers of assault suspects identified in FBI wanted photos. By my count, one Dunbar number of suspects are charged with assault. There were one Dunbar number of police victims from that day. There have been, Attorney General Garland revealed last night, one Dunbar number of prosecutors working on the investigation. One Dunbar number of Congresspeople backed challenges to the vote certification last year, and a significant subset of those people further enabled the insurrectionists in more substantive ways. The January 6 Select Committee has interviewed two Dunbar number of witnesses about the event, a group that barely overlaps with the suspects already charged.
The Proud Boys led a multi-pronged assault on the building, one that is most easily seen on the coordinated assault from the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, America Firsters, and Alex Jones on the East door. That assault on the East door appears after 22:30 on NYT’s Day of Rage on the riot, which remains the most accessible way for people to try to understand the riot. That assault on the East door, because of Pied Piper Alex Jones’ role in providing bodies, leads directly back to Trump’s request that Jones lead rally attendees from the Ellipse to the Capitol.
Sedition Hunters have compiled a Capitol Attack Timeline. They have been instrumental in finding and identifying a great many insurrectionists.

Also known as, Mob members. Rioters. Violent traitors who wanted to overturn an election and who state that their leader, Trump, sent them.

    The opening paragraph:

    Goals and pre-planning

The attack on the Capitol on Jan 6 appears an organized, coordinated attempt to flood the building with people and shut down the process of certifying the electoral votes. The crowd was seeded with members of organized extremist groups (e.g. Proud Boys, Three Percenters and other local militias, Oath Keepers, “Groypers” from America First) who move purposefully. We estimate around 5% of the crowd was under orders to complete some task, though most were likely not aware of a full plan. Many had mingled at prior events, and the Nov 14 and Dec.12 DC rallies seem important as rehearsals. Even the ‘normies’ (those not acting under orders, who do the bulk of the fighting) had been prepped via an extensive disinfo campaign with themes and ideas that are repeated often, in terms of language (“This is our house!” 1776!” “They work for us”) and concepts (“the lawmakers are in the tunnels”, “invoke the Insurrection Act”). Many were broadly aware of a plan to enter the building, and many came armed with pepper spray, knives, heavy flagpoles or other weapons; gear such as helmets, tactical vests, radios, and bullhorns. During the attack, breaches occurred abruptly, seemingly on command, instigated by a few but quickly pulling in wider participation. Attacks were organized to produce nearly simultaneous breaches on both sides of the Capitol (even despite some apparent setbacks and delays). Note: the use of a large civilian crowd to confuse defenders and achieve a strategic objective is a tactic that is now taught in military academies around the world.
The pivot point was Mike Pence. He was the one who would count and finalize the election. He's the one Trump asked to stop the process. He was the one whom the crowd chanted to be hung. This article from Empty Wheel lays out many details. The Select Committee and DOJ Investigations Converge at Mike Pence.

Who would've thunk that two men like Quayle and Pence would end up being pivotal in securing our democratic process? Not me.

George Washington University has a page on the Capitol Hill Siege.

In keeping with our tradition of providing primary source documents to the research community and the public at large, The Program on Extremism has launched a project to create a central database of court records related to the events of January 6, 2021. This page will be updated as additional individuals are charged with criminal activities and new records are introduced into the criminal justice system. You can view today's numbers, check out our interactive visualizations, browse the cases, read our related reports, and download our database below.
(Primary source documents means, of course, not hearsay and not a social media talking head)

    Today's Numbers:

The number of federal cases against individuals involved in the Capitol Hill Siege stands at 723. According to our latest analysis of the cases:
    Average age: 39-years-old
Individuals came from 46 states and the District of Columbia
Cases have been brought against 630 men (87%) and 93 women (13%)
The largest numbers came from Florida (78), Pennsylvania (63), and Texas (63)
The majority (>77%) were charged in part using evidence from their personal social media accounts, others' accounts, or both
At least 85 (12%) have military experience (77 Veterans, 2 National Guard, 4 Reserve, 1 Active Duty, 1 Attending Basic Training)
    177 (22%) have pleaded guilty
Marcy Wheeler at Empty Wheel sifts through primary source documents and pays a pretty penny to do so.

When TV lawyers tell you what there is or is not evidence in the January 6 investigation, you might ask them how many thousands of pages of court filings they read before they came to that conclusion. Because chances are very good they’ve read almost none of it.
There are links on this page to six articles at Empty Wheel about the insurrection and attempted coup.Trump, Navarro and others have admitted to it being a coup. It was an auto-coup which failed.

I find myself wondering at the team which has glommed so hard onto losers.

Confederates. They lost the Civil War.

Nazis. They lost the World War.

Trump. He lost the election and is a very sore loser.

What is it about glomming onto losers?

    I dunno.

I dunno either DT, but you missed one that belongs in that category:

United States. They lost both the Vietnam and Afghanistan Wars.

Which team glommed hard onto them?

They are experiencing sympathetic identification. But that's weird when one considers that what was lost was a usurpation of Democracy (with a capital D)
