You're very optimistic. I think it's going to be a long time still that we'll be wearing masks, my friend. The virus keeps on mutating, and there are still plenty of covidiots who either refuse to wear one and/or who are holding lockdown parties.

Over here, the police has to shut down lockdown parties every day. One such party had even been organized in such a way that they had rented a tour bus to pick up all the party-goers and take them to the pertinent location. Others hire Uber to go and pick up the cretins.

Every single day, my friend. Every single day.

Anyone can go on the internet these days and say anything they want, without vetting or verification, which then leads to completely unverified information being picked up by people and treated as truth.

I have a massive problem with my Girlfriend over this, which is honestly increasingly a deal-breaker for me. Even though I spent over two weeks in hospital with SARS, my sister was also infected and sick, plus a relative died of the disease, she still doesn't believe in Covid and thinks it is all a hoax that was made up for political ends. I tried to explain it to her, but she is impervious to any information on this topic that doesn't confirm her existing biases. She lives in some sort of facebook bubble, where she gets all of her news and information from "friends" who also believe this utter bull. I told her she should read reliable news sources, but since she doesn't speak English and interacts mostly with Russians and Ukrainians, there is just a huge gap between us intellectually, that cannot be bridged. I may very well have to let her go over this as it is driving me mad.

She just assumes that I had a cold which turned bad and I ended up in the hospital with Pneumonia, but not due to covid. The virus apparently doesn't exist...

Chris, Extreme covid conspiracy nonsense is a litmus test. It reveals a person's world view. And in this case, opposites certainly don't attract. They repel. Consider splitting with woman as if you have dodged a bullet. People who live in facebook land and never venture out, have suffered a virtual brain abduction.

NAP, I wouldn't blow off ivermectin. If you listen closely to the debunking video, there seems to be strong evidence that it works. Big pharma will work overtime to dismiss any claims that out of patent drugs work. There are several different kinds of kool-aide. Two of the current ones are anti social media, and pro social media. The truth is really hard to decipher in this kind of environment.

I have actually drilled down a bit on ivermectin and found that there is something there.

I thought this was good, I think he mentions ivermectin when I listened to it when it came out I was not familiar though, so could be wrong:

I am sorry, Octopus Garden, but Amanda will not be able to reply to that question, nor will she even see it. She has been banned from this thread because of her insistence on posting misinformation, denial that Covid-19 would be a real disease, and fanning the flames with fear porn about a global tyranny.

I see your point, but I'm not automatically opposed to conspiracy theories, some of them are true, even if most are Bullshit.

It is just that the intellectual gap between us is so big, that we can only ever talk about trivial stuff (family, friends, work, food, etc...) and this becomes a problem the longer we are together. My problem isn't that she is misinformed, but that she doesn't trust or respect me enough to even consider that her information is wrong and that I have better information than she does.

Like I said before, my big frustration is that in many parts of Asia, life goes on pretty much like normal, whereas here we have to suffer under wartime restrictions. The only thing they haven't done yet is order us into the basement, but that's probably coming too...

Of course the difference being that Asians were already fastidious mask-wearers even before the pandemic hit and they had the experience with first SARS epidemic back in the noughties to prepare for this second, less deadly but more infectious one. I am still amazed at how well Singapore handled it for instance, they never had to go into lockdown and you can still lead a pretty normal life over there as long as you take some precautions. It's the first time since I left, that I genuinely want to move back to Singapore and I'm truly envious of life over there. Not only is it 30 degrees (celsius) over there right now with a balmy breeze under the palm trees, they can actually go and have a drink, eat a meal, go to the cinema or a cafe, meet friends, etc...

Meanwhile I (and most of you lot, to be fair) am stuck here in freezing weather living under what is essentially house arrest. Normally, you would have to commit a pretty serious crime to be put under house arrest, but it has now become the new normal. And yes, it is because we are all so damn individualistic, that we simply can't (collectively) follow some simple rules and take precautions.

    Hi OG,

Agreed, but science is cautious ... call it a fault and certainly pedantic ... but it isn't like a conspiracy to discount it either.

Sounds like my ex, Chris ... proceed with caution, but don't write it off prematurely ... some things are never easy ... like relationships. Impossible for me ... which is why I went into hiding after my divorce ... for my own happiness, self-respect, sanity, and peace ... but overtime that has its downside too. And when children are involved a lot of heartache.

Hi Chris I think the world operates on a loose framework of law, woven together with organized opportunism and within that structure there are bound to be conspiracies. Where I differ with covidiots, as Aragorn calls them, is believing that there is a massive genocidal program in play, initiated by Bill Gates, Prince Charles, and various other 'elites.'
There is some evidence that suggests the vaccine could have been the result of 'gain of function' experimentation that went sideways. But, it's all a big maybe. It's the certainty about covid origins and how it fits into a greater global conspiracy that leaves me cold. When does, "I wonder if," become "I believe that" ?

Some people are more impervious to hardened belief, and it's usually, in my experience, people who have always read a lot on different subjects across a wide spectrum and have enough emotional intelligence to get a sense of when they are being played.

So though it may be just an intellectual divide, it will be expressed in an individual being more susceptible to propaganda and social media. It's not a lack of respect for you on the part of your girlfriend, it is cognitive and emotional predisposition, together with her social milieu that have created a perfect storm of hardened belief.

Anyway, imho, that might be what is occurring.
