The 2nd largest city in Latin America, Mexico city is freaking, unbelievably HUGE, it dwarfs Houston, TX and Houston is huge.

My Great-Uncle (removed a couple of times), Lazaro Cardenas would have done better, much better for the people.

my bio paternal line is Cardenas...I always manage to make it about myself don't I. I'm an open person and don't mind discussing my life...so forgive me my indiscretions.

Incidentally, this kind of stupidity is as contagious as the virus...Brazil is another example...I really think these types believe, maybe they know, that emulating Trump will garner them political capital.

I was just reading the Harris County new cases from a national source (Houston, TX)...The national source reported 225 new cases today.
The Harris County Health organization is reporting under 10 new cases...Gotta be a mistake?

that guy sounded pretty freaked out...he's pretty much right though...all I know is that I'm staying at home and always stressing to my daughter to stay safe...that's pretty much all i can do...

I think they deliberately changed policy on the updating of the daily case tracker from the public health service...gotta be a Texas political move, though Houston, Harris county is not a stronghold of political Red...conservative.

No... its not a hoax... or is it?

    Yesterday -
CDC now says coronavirus ‘does not spread easily’ via contaminated surfaces -
    https://fox6now.com/2020/05/20/cdc-n...ated-surfaces/

Coronavirus can live in the air for hours and on surfaces for days, study finds
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...dy/2863287001/
info from this study by the NIH
    https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-...-surfaces-days

NIH and CDC are joined at the hip (in case you didn't know that).

So which is the hoax and which is the truth? You can't wiggle off the hook by saying that there's no contradiction. But it's not about word parsing... it is about the message people "receive"

The truth is in the name - COVID-19(84)

one is the air, the other is contaminated surface...I would say that is good news that came with updated information, if if it is accurate, winds change and we bend or break...it ain't rocket science.

    But perhaps it should be?

On the other hand, we can always drink a pint of bleach and mix it with Lysol...just in case.

That's my view as well... use common sense regarding the whole of life which now involves a new component, COVID-19.

I refrained from quoting the rest of your post but just some friendly advice... don't "drink a pint of bleach and mix it with Lysol."

This remains a learning process with the novel coronavirus and will for many months and years. With something like this it's better to err on the side of caution.

We could have done a hell of a lot better flattening the curve.

In my book at least, less illness and loss of lives is a good thing. For everyone, not just the economy.

Even if you kill multiples more in the process? That's what's at stake and... oh yeah, an election (conveniently).

Those are deaths that could have been avoided if the USA had had a decent public healthcare system, a decent education system and a less corporate-fascism-oriented policy with a carefully programmed-in and deeply embedded aversion to all things socialism.

But it didn't and it doesn't. So any deaths that are to come as the result of the impact of the pandemic on the US economy are in fact only the US's karma coming round to bite them in the ass for consistently spending over 60% of the annual gross national income on the US military-industrial complex, instead of on those aspects of society where that money is needed the most.

One only reaps what one sows. But recognizing that takes a wisdom and intellectual maturity that by definition is diametrically opposed to the reactionary anti-intellectual movement that has been dominating US culture since at least as early as the 1940s.

And before good old Fred Steeves feels the itch coming up to put me in my place again on account of my criticism of the United States, these are not my words, but those of the late and great Isaac Asimov.

I agree with your post overall, but you got your figures wrong. The US economy is about 20-trillion in size and of that roughly 1 trillion is spent on the military in various ways (including department of energy spending on nuclear weapons, etc...). So, it's probably more like 5-6 percent, but that is still very high by international comparison, only North Korea and perhaps Greece spends as much on the military proportionally and they're both essentially on a constant war footing. Japan, Germany, etc... spend only 1 percent of their economy on the military, though of course they don't have an empire to maintain.

But, the overall picture is actually worse, because of the federal system in the US and much lower federal taxes than comparable nations. Federal Tax receipts are only about 3-4 trillion annually, so the US spends close to a third of the federal budget on "defence" a pretty unprecedented number amongst modern nations.

And therein lies the problem, Chris. It's frightening that Americans would rather gear up for stomping on the whole f*cking world than take care of the innocent. It's highly disturbed and a deeply embedded American archetype.

To be fair, those foreign adventures hardly ever serve actual American interests. Those forces are mostly there as a world army and are entirely global in their outlook and reach. If the US army served the interests of the population, it'd mostly be at home and would only have a few naval outposts in faraway places to keep the world's shipping lanes safe for US interests, much like it did in the 19th century.

Helping people is a Christian value, not a socialist value.

But with the advent and growing popularity of the prosperity doctrine, chasing wealth at the expense of others has now become a 'Christian' value. It's not a thing that will make the country great, or even good.
