Never underestimate the stupidity of people. Here's Trump's "success".

The Americas are not doing well in their fight against Covid-19. A second wave is already on the way. This next surge is going to cost a lot of lives.

It's still part of the first wave and yes, there will be a high cost of lives. The first wave has to crash before the second one comes. The first one hasn't crashed yet. The chart at 8:50 shows this.

My brother was observing that the spikes are in the warm states. His idea is that it's getting too hot and people are going back inside into close quarters.

Trump just wants to stop testing. Then the numbers will go down. Not the deaths of course. But those don't seem to be what he cares about.

One of the funny things going on is that everybody is freaking out about the 'real' total numbers of cases but if anything I find that irrelevant if not advantageous. If there were 300 million cases in the U.S. that wouldn't change the number of deaths and that is the true measure of the pandemic.

Regarding Japan, the mask wearing would be mostly cultural, imo. The Japanese, and other asian cultures, place great importance in showing respect to others. It's respectful to wear a mask to show others that you do not wish to harm or endanger them or society. There isn't the need for a law to make people do it. And the proof is in the pudding.

In America, many folks don't seem to care about respecting others' health. They are about themselves. Some say, "Well I'm not sick". This is a very weak argument. The possibility of being pre-symptomatic for several days precludes that excuse. A person could get infected five minutes after taking the test that shows them to be clear.

The fact that there is such a profound lack of respect for fellow countrymen here is pretty pathetic.

I applaud all my fellow Americans who show each other and their country respect by wearing a mask to help prevent spread of a deadly virus.

    Bravo to them.

The chart at 8:50 shows just how pathetic we are. I use that word because we, as a nation, should know better. We're supposed to be smarter than that.

My sister-in law says that her new phrase is "You can't fix stupid." I told her that it appears to be fixing itself. Unfortunately other folks will get caught up in that as collateral damage. It's very sad and rather embarrassing.

My husband talks about wanting to move away. We'll be American wherever we go. And we'll be recognized as such. And respect for 'our kind' is not going up these days.

I wrote about this back in February. Americans' hyperindividualistic attitude was always going to be a hindrance in fighting a pandemic effectively. With all due respect to those present, who are excepted, most American are like petulant children, unable to follow basic rules in a rational manner, which benefit all of society. Just look at how they drive on highways, compared to say, Germany.

Now, this extreme individualism has some benefits of course, just not during a pandemic, when society has to act as a whole.

Dmitry Orlov has long theorised that when the US collapses, it will be far more swift and brutal than anything seen in previous history, because social and cultural collapse has already happened a long time ago, the edifice is basically held together by dollar hegemony. Once that goes away, the whole edifice will implode in a nanosecond, taking most institutions and social, cultural norms with it.

I'm in conservative San Diego right now. No problems with wearing masks. People are being very careful. No one is yelling at anyone about it that I see.

This is a tale of a day in the life and times, DT ... so, I hope you're not flying .... The last time I was there was the day of the airliner crash...one of the weirdest days of my life and I've had a few...that same day i saw a car on the freeway on its hood, and downtown i saw police holding a hysterical mother as paramedics worked on her young child in the middle of the street, he had been hit by a car...this was all in a single day and really was my first foray into a large city beyond just passing through...it was enough to sour me on the city life notion forever...but then i landed in Houston.

This is my area of deepest interest, Covid wise. The next wave may be worse, in that, if numbers of fatalities drop and people feel more assured that they may get temporarily sick but NOT die, society may be setting itself up for a tsunami of M.E/CFS post viral infections that last a life time. Post viral infections are extremely debilitating. Imagine a world where possibly half the population or more can only work, at most, 2 hours per day.

"ME/CFS is typically diagnosed when symptoms persist for six months or more, and the new coronavirus has barely been infecting humans for that long. Still, many of the long-haulers’ symptoms “sound exactly like those that patients in our community experience,” says Jennifer Brea, the executive director of the advocacy group #MEAction.

LeClerc, Akrami, and others have noted that their symptoms reappear when they try to regain a measure of agency by cleaning, working out, or even doing yoga. This is post-exertional malaise—the defining feature of ME/CFS. It’s a severe multi-organ crash that follows activity as light as a short walk. It’s also distinct from mere exhaustion: You can’t just push through it, and you’ll feel much worse if you try. The ME/CFS community has learned that resting as much as possible in the early months of postviral fatigue is crucial. Garner learned that lesson the hard way. After writing that “my disease has lifted,” he did a high-intensity workout, and was bedridden for three days. He is now reading literature about ME/CFS and listening to his sister, who has had the disease. “We have much to learn from that community,” he says.

The symptoms of ME/CFS have long been trivialized; its patients disbelieved; its researchers underfunded. The condition is especially underdiagnosed among black and brown communities, who are also disproportionately likely to be infected and killed by COVID-19. If the pandemic creates a large population of people who have symptoms that are similar to those of ME/CFS, it might trigger research into this and other overlooked diseases. Several teams of scientists are already planning studies of COVID-19 patients to see if any become ME/CFS patients—and why. Brea says she would welcome such a development. But she also feels “a lot of grief for people who may have to walk that path, [and] grief for the time we could have spent over the last four decades researching this so we’d have a better understanding of how to treat patients now.”

"...the bacterium behind Q fever..." Ah hah! I see now.

That's a joke. But the paragraph containing that phrase begins with this: "That clusters of ME/CFS have followed many infectious outbreaks is noteworthy."

I can see why this interests you, OG.

My sister-in-law's long term babysitter ended up developing these symptoms. I don't know what might have precipitated the onset but at the time it was questioned a lot. Some people thought she might be faking.
