Kids these days: Why the youth of today seem lacking

This is an interesting article about how previous generations always seem to think the newer generations are lacking, and it repeats over and over with ever new generation

In five preregistered studies, we assess people’s tendency to believe “kids these days” are deficient relative to those of previous generations. Across three traits, American adults (N = 3458; Mage = 33 to 51 years) believe today’s youth are in decline; however, these perceptions are associated with people’s standing on those traits. Authoritarian people especially think youth are less respectful of their elders, intelligent people especially think youth are less intelligent, and well-read people especially think youth enjoy reading less. These beliefs are not predicted by irrelevant traits. Two mechanisms contribute to humanity’s perennial tendency to denigrate kids: a person-specific tendency to notice the limitations of others where one excels and a memory bias projecting one’s current qualities onto the youth of the past. When observing current children, we compare our biased memory to the present and a decline appears. This may explain why the kids these days effect has been happening for millennia.

Another aspect of it is that people constantly remember things from their past but they don't remember the actual first time they experienced that moment, they remember the last time they thought about it. So the recollection may change over time and there is no way for the person to know since they keep adding to it every other time they remember that experience. This adds to the problem because you end up 'remembering' things in a way that suits your current person and how you see yourself. And not how you really experienced it way back

Is there anything which explores the reverse of this - How the perception of older adults by youth has changed over time?

Yes there are source kun, however think about this, the problem is as such

Studies like the one i posted, are prepared and executed by adults, so they have two sides of it, they were kids and now they are adults and they can see both sides

You cannot find the same in kids, since they have not seen both sides yet. it is very different and hard to figure out a sample based on that

    But there are some studies

    https://www.sciencedaily.com/release...0913153630.htm
    https://www.kon.org/urc/horgan.html

In the end, it's like we asking our moms why are they like they are, do you see? How you can figure out an adult mind, without becoming an adult yourself?

If you run too fast to become one, you will no longer have the background to know how a kid sees the world. If you don't spend the proper time being a kid, you will also won't have the background to know how to be a proper adult.

And this is a problem for that study, because if you think about it, at what time will you ask the kids to explain how adults are being "lacking"? If they don't have a clue what being an adult is?

It's hard to figure out, there's mostly always a disconnection between adult and kid

Thomas Jefferson was likely not the 1st adult to make that statement but he certainly was one of them. Today's youth are the only hope for the survival of the species and they are prepared for the task. They will make the rest of us that have gone before them look like the idiots we are.
