‘SNL’ to make history with post-
    presidential election show

Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris, Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump, Kate McKinnon as Savannah Guthrie and Jim Carrey as Joe Biden.

“Saturday Night Live” is milking the 2020 presidential election.

The late-night sketch show revealed plans Thursday to air an original episode on Nov. 7, just days after the Tuesday, Nov. 3, election. It will mark the 46th season’s sixth consecutive show — a scheduling first in the show’s history.

Neither a host nor a musical guest was announced yet.

“SNL” was sidelined in the spring due to the coronavirus and produced several virtual episodes to close out the 45th season.

The show returned to Studio 8H on Oct. 3 with some familiar faces: Alec Baldwin as President Trump and Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris. But creator Lorne Michaels also brought in an even bigger name, Jim Carrey, to play Joe Biden — to lackluster effect. A week later, the show even flopped when lampooning the wayward fly that took refuge on the head of Mike Pence (Beck Bennett) during the vice presidential debate the previous week. Thankfully, Carrey redeemed himself in his most recent at-bat last weekend.

Singer Adele will host this Saturday’s episode with musical guest H.E.R., though the guest lineup has not been revealed for the Oct. 31 show.

    Richard Linklater on why he
    made a docuseries about animal
    rescue

    By Lauren Sarner

    October 23, 2020

[B]That Animal Rescue Show" follows the animal rescue community in and around Austin, Texas, where Richard Linklater lives.[/B

"Richard Linklater is pivoting from suburban ennui to man’s four-legged friends in “That Animal Rescue Show.”

Premiering Thursday, Oct. 29 on CBS All Access, each episode of the docuseries looks at a different animal rescue organization around Linklater’s hometown of Austin, TX.

“I hadn’t really done any TV or anything, and I wasn’t really trying to,” Linklater, 60, tells The Post.

“But I was getting to know some animal rescue people, and thought, ‘What an interesting subculture.’ It’s the same impulse you’d have to make a movie and put some story or characters that you care about out into the world. I think people would get a lot out of it. People want to be closer to animals. We have our dogs and cats and pet birds, but people are generally far removed from farm animals and wildlife — urban America in particular.”

The Oscar-nominated filmmaker is best known for his slice-of-life movies capturing youth and longing such as 1993 cult hit “Dazed and Confused” (which launched Matthew Matthew McConaughey’s infamous ‘Alright’ catchphrase), the Golden Globe winning “Boyhood,” The “Before” trilogy, and “School of Rock,” among others.

Executive producing an unscripted small screen series is a change of pace for him, but one that felt natural, since Linklater himself has a bevy of four-legged friends.

“I think the current headcount is 4 pigs, 3 donkeys, 3 goats, a lot of ducks, 8 hens, and 2 turkeys recently. [‘That Animal Rescue Show’ is] so night and day different from what I usually do. Documentary…is not how I think naturally, but it was right for this show. Ultimately, TV is a producer medium more than a director medium.”

However, as much as the show’s format was an adjustment for Linklater, the setting came naturally to the native Texan.

“This was where I got to know people, and one group led to another, and we were able to round out the show,” he says. “You could probably drop into a lot of communities around the world and do the same show. It’s certainly not exclusive to central Texas. This work is being done everywhere. But it was familiar to me, and it is the home of the only pig pageant in the world. Austin is a little quirky.”

Organizations featured in “That Animal Rescue Show” include Safe In Austin; Central Texas Pig Rescue; and Paws In Prison, which takes dogs to a women’s correctional facility for the inmates to train."

"The show also covers the stories of people such as Central Texas Pig Rescue founder Dan Illescas, who says onscreen that he feels a connection to the often neglected animal because he spent his own childhood in and out of foster care.

“If you really think about the show, it’s sort of a 180 degree opposite of ‘Tiger King’ or something where you get these sleazy people exploiting the animals for money,” says Linklater.

“This is the opposite. There are some saintly people who are really spending their days helping people and animals and really putting time and energy into saving animals’ lives. I just think the people behind [animal rescue organizations] are the best kinds of people — just giving of themselves.”

    Boucher's story is very interesting.

I wonder if crap happened like that in my college. I was enough of an outsider that I may have graduated unscathed. I wouldn't have been 'with the group'.

this is kind of bizarre but one time i was looking at my girlfriend (when I was in high school) and i thought she looked very weird, if you know what I mean. I was drunk and high, it was night and I was sneaking a visit, so that probably had something to do with it. lol! nah, couldn't have been!

    Question

    Trump's America
    DW Documentary

The US in the 2020 election year is a country deep in crisis. It’s been torn apart by the debate on racism, and millions have been infected with the coronavirus. On top of that, its president is pouring oil on the flames with his Twitter tirades.

At the beginning of the year, things were looking good for Donald Trump: the economy was doing well, unemployment figures were at a 50-year low, his job approval rating was rising, and the Democrats were preoccupied with themselves. But then came the coronavirus, a hazard that the president initially made light of, saying it would miraculously disappear. Instead of a miracle, the crisis hit the United States harder than any other country. The economy is in the doldrums. And COVID-19 is making the shortcomings of the health care system glaringly obvious.

Black Americans have been hit harder by the coronavirus than most. A higher proportion of them work in low-wage jobs that offer little protection against the virus, and they are less likely to have health insurance. The rage expressed in demonstrations against racism is being fuelled by the corona crisis and the mass unemployment it has triggered across the US.

It is hard to imagine that the economy will recover quickly - despite the trillions of dollars Trump is giving to companies. It is also hard to imagine that the millions of unemployed will have jobs again by the time the election is held.

Filmmakers Claudia Buckenmaier and Marion Schmickler traveled through the swing states of Arizona, Wisconsin and Michigan and asked people how the economic and health crisis is affecting them. What hopes do voters have going into November’s election? The bitter dispute between Republicans and Democrats and Donald Trump’s divisive style of government has brought democracy in the US to brink of the abyss. The distrust is so great that the Democrats even expect that Trump will reject the election result if he loses. Unimaginable? The Democrats seem to be preparing for exactly this scenario.

Impatience: Why we don't want to wait

    CBS Sunday Morning

The phrase "patience is a virtue" is often easier spoken than practiced, especially in our exasperating times. Barry Petersen set out before the COVID-19 pandemic hit to learn just why we dislike waiting so much, and what we can do to keep our cool in an impatient world. He spoke to one researcher about the science behind impatience.
