Ismail Haniyeh, a senior leader of the polit bureau of Hamas was allegedly assassinated in Iran’s capital Tehran on July 31. The news of his death was confirmed by the Palestinian group that governs Gaza as well as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or IRGC. While both Hamas and IRGC blamed Israel for Haniyeh’s killing, Tel Aviv has maintained a stony silence on the incident. It has neither accepted nor denied responsibility for the killing.
Haniyeh’s reported assassination came less than 24 hours after three people were killed in an Israeli strike in Lebanon’s Beirut. The Israeli military described the attack as a “targeted assassination operation” against Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr.
What does Haniyeh’s assassination mean for Hamas and its war against Israel? Could these two deadly attacks push the Middle East to the brink of war?
