NATO to increase presence in Baltic Sea following suspected cable sabotage

The head of NATO has announced that the alliance will enhance its military presence in the Baltic Sea. The move comes after the suspected sabotage of the Estlink 2 undersea power cable linking Finland and Estonia earlier this week. Finland has detained the vessel suspected to have damaged the cable, which could belong to the so-called Russian shadow fleet. Estonia has already said it will launch a naval operation to protect the Estlink 1 cable.

These incidents are quite interesting. Thinking it through here, it's very apparent why the US blew the Nord Stream, they never even wanted it built in the first place and were quite vocal about it. And, had thus threatened to destroy it on multiple occasions.

But how might it be in Russia's interest, to be shooting down aircraft and dragging anchors over underwater cables?

Other than to just start committing random acts of terrorism, I can't think of any.

It might depend on what exactly they are disrupting when they do it. The other one went pretty much, oh well. Ths one is a little different. And, in any case, a little random vandalism always felt good to me...when frustrated. I started early but also gave it up early after watching my older brother just smash shit for kicks. It was funny until he started in on me. It occurred to me at that point there must be a better way.

Oh, and Finland is a bit of a sore spot for Putin and potentially strategically important to the U.S. Maybe he was just practicing.

Russia's Vladimir Putin on Saturday apologised to Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, for a "tragic incident" which happened in Russian airspace involving an Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane that crashed on Wednesday.

Flight J2-8243 crashed on Wednesday in a ball of fire near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan after diverting from southern Russia where Ukrainian drones were reported to be attacking several cities. At least 38 people were killed while 29 survived.

Al Jazeera's Dorsa Jabbari joins live from Moscow.
