The Lightyear One is a prototype ‘solar car’ with 450 miles of range

Although I don't own an electric car, I'm quite obsessed by them. The below article talks about a new type of electric car, which has a roughly 450 mile / 700 km range (under ideal conditions). It looks good, but the real party piece is that they managed to integrate 5 Square metres of solar panels into the body work (roof and hood), which is very impressive. From what Youtube Channel Fully Charged reported, this means the solar panels can recharge at about a rate of 1,5 kw per hour, good for 12 km of range per hour, or roughly the same rate as your typical European 220 V household plug. It may not sound like much, but it is a gamechanger, and I'll explain why.

The typical daily trip a car owner takes is usually less than 50 km or 30 miles. This comes to around 18000 km / 12000 miles annually. A Solar-powered car can easily provide that much charge, provided you don't go on trips longer than the car's overall range and in those rare cases, you can just use a public fast charger to top up. A typical California or Australia day will easily provide the car with 100 miles / 160 km of range just by parking it outside in the sun. Basically, this means that once you pay for your solar-powered car, you'll never have to pay to fuel it up again, except for very rare occasions, where you're taking a road trip. The era of free energy is officially here and it seems Solar has won the day.

... Provided that it doesn't get covered from top to bottom with bird poo in that time, because birds love shiny cars, and their aim is very good.

Yes, that is a big problem with solar roofs in general. They have to be kept clean, otherwise their efficiency can fall drastically. Maybe we'll have to use a built-in scarecrow app to keep Corey Goode's blue chickins away...

Those damned Blue Chickens, they come all the way over from another galaxy in the 37th dimension just to shit on my freshly washed Aragorn Mobile. I'm not happy about that!

We'll let the hound deal with those chickins... they won't stand a chance once he gets going

I'm glad others thought that scene was funny. The Hound was a funny guy. The rapport between him and Arya just got better and better over the series.

GOT is the only series where I could tolerate the c word. It's vile generally, but it fits in that world.

And just in case there are chickens left over, there is always another hero...

    Bah, Humbug.

Obelix would laugh at your chickin

Has to be at least a wild boar for him.

Regarding the c-word, it is a term of endearment in the UK and people use it quite a lot, often with affection. Nobody would be offended if you called them a silly Kant.

Not among any British people I know, Chris.

Chris...I must apologize on behalf of the Mod-team the way your thread has been de-railed this way.

Solar-cars looks very interesting, especially in some places...anywhere but Scotland. C-word...hmmm not so much!

No worries, it's all in good fun. This is a single news item anyways, not an ongoing thread.

I am quite interested in alternative energy, electric cars and that sort of thing, so I was thinking about starting a thread in that mould, but I'm not sure there is really a demand for it on this forum. To most people it is quite a boring and technical subject. I mean if you start droning on about Kilowatthours, 97 percent efficiency and induction motors, most people's eyes glaze over...

Blue Chickens are very bold though, they are righteously indignant...Where is Corey Goode when you REALLY need him.
