I would say that this is actually the mainstream narrative about colonisation that they teach in schools. Of course colonisers benefited massively from exploiting their colonies, why else would they go to all the effort of building up a colony? The views of Niall Ferguson (some of whose books I've read) actually go against the mainstream, claiming that colonisation also had benefits, which in the case of Singapore or Hong Kong for Instance, are undeniable.

I've met quite a few Singaporeans and Malaysians who were quite grateful for the British for their relative fairness and the development they brought, in stark contrast to the Dutch in Indonesia for instance. There are also many in South India, who resent the rule by the North and look back at colonial times with perhaps a misplaced nostalgia and fondness. They also refuse to learn to Hindi and want to keep English as the main official language of India.

Then you've got the Vatican, Pope, Cardinals, Bishops, Canons and Priests raking in from the poor and not doing a thing to help them, which goes against that reiigion. Somehow they have managed to put blinkers on their public.
