    Question

How does touch affect our mental and physical health?

    DW Documentary

Touch shapes us as humans. Indeed, touch is fundamental to what makes us social beings. Touch influences how we perceive stress and pain, who we trust and who we fear. How does this work? And what happens to us in the absence of touch?

Gentle touch is vital for us humans. It creates the first contact with the world for newborns, giving us a sense of security and belonging. Touch influences our immune system, and on our feelings for our fellow human beings. Especially strong feelings, such as love or compassion, can be better conveyed through touch than through words, facial expressions or gestures.

Given how important touch is, it’s no surprise that humans have a highly specialized system devoted exclusively to perceiving gentle touch stimuli. Why does the touch of a stranger feel so different to that of someone we are emotionally close to? What is happening in our brain - and what role does the brain play in all this?

In an era of social distancing, touch research is becoming increasingly relevant. How does it affect us, and our relationships, when we are required to keep our distance? Researchers explore what role touch plays in our physical and emotional well-being, and what the consequences are when touch is missing.

Benjamin Franklin | Inside Look | Ken Burns Documentary

    PBS

Ken Burns’s two-part, four-hour documentary, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, explores the revolutionary life of one of the 18th Century’s most consequential and compelling personalities, whose work and words unlocked the mystery of electricity and helped create the United States. Franklin’s 84 years (1706-1790) spanned an epoch of momentous change in science, technology, literature, politics, and government—fields he himself advanced through a lifelong commitment to societal and self-improvement. Over the course of seven impossibly prolific decades, Franklin ascended professional and social ladders, rising from a printer’s apprentice in provincial Boston to the most popular man in Paris, France.

He wrote influential essays, coined words and phrases still used today, established enduring institutions in his adopted Philadelphia, introduced groundbreaking theories about the natural world, developed life-saving inventions, and contributed as much as anyone to the foundation of the American Republic. But Franklin’s life was full of contradictions, and his success came at a cost. Achievements as a writer, printer, scientist, and statesman brought him worldwide acclaim but divided him from his family. Though he would later speak out against slavery, he owned and enslaved people in his middle age. He denounced the white men who killed native people indiscriminately while also championing the expansion of white settlements onto indigenous lands. He did all he could to enhance the British Empire, then gave everything he had to win America’s independence.

Franklin’s influence was unmatched in his time, and his impact remains with us today. “If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead and rotten,” he said in Poor Richard’s Almanack, “either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing.” Benjamin Franklin did both.

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, directed and executive produced by Ken Burns, written by Dayton Duncan, and produced by David Schmidt and Ken Burns, premieres April 4-5, 2022.

world on the cusp of change."

Inside Israel's Closed Off Ultra-Orthodox Communities

    Foreign Correspondent

In the modern State of Israel, the ultra-Orthodox – or Haredi – communities live a world apart.

Rejecting the secular, they live according to ancient religious principles. Many Haredi men spend their days in religious schools studying the Jewish bible.

“People here focus on the essentials: on the Torah. Material things are irrelevant here,” says Yossef, a member of a Haredi community on the edge of Tel Aviv.

“On Shabbat, cars stand still, everyone observes Shabbat. The women show restraint outdoors.”

Yossef’s wife, Esther, supports her husband.

“Man was created to study day and night. As a woman, I support that and benefit from it as well.”

The Israeli government subsidises this lifestyle, exempting community members from compulsory military service.

It’s lead to resentment among secular Jews, tensions which have deepened during COVID.

“This is a state within a state,” says one Israeli MP. “Many Haredi movements want to integrate into Israeli society…the only problem is that some Haredi leaders strongly hinder this integration.”

Presented by Eric Campbell, this Arte documentary explores how pressures from outside are forcing many Haredim to integrate more with the modern world.

Moshe is one who’s pushing the boundaries. He’s set up a tech company which adheres to religious rules, including providing separate workspaces for men and women.

“In the business world, the sexes share a space and many Haredim don't deal well with that. So, we founded this place, so the Haredim feel comfortable in the high-tech world.”

Chira dreams of becoming a professional singer, but as a Haredi woman she’s not allowed to perform for men. She’s decided she wants to be a performer, but only for other women.

“I will never be able to sing on a stage where everyone can see me. But a new female audience is emerging. They organise parties, celebrations for young girls, festivals for women.”

Moshe feels his community’s traditions can help drive innovation.

“Some think if you preserve tradition, you stay stuck in the past, but the future is innovation… The talent for innovation comes precisely from reflection…This legacy enables us to look forward and invent new things.”

    A backstory ...

"The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is a church in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. According to traditions dating back to the fourth century, it contains the two holiest sites in Christianity: the site where Jesus was crucified, at a place known as Calvary or Golgotha, and Jesus's empty tomb, where he is believed by Christians to have been buried and resurrected. The tomb is enclosed by a 19th-century shrine called the Aedicula. The Status Quo, an understanding between religious communities dating to 1757, applies to the site.

Within the church proper are the last four stations of the Cross of the Via Dolorosa, representing the final episodes of the Passion of Jesus. The church has been a major Christian pilgrimage destination since its creation in the fourth century, as the traditional site of the resurrection of Christ, thus its original Greek name, Church of the Anastasis ('Resurrection').

Today, the wider complex around the Church of the Holy Sepulchre also serves as the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem, while control of the church itself is shared, a simultaneum, among several Christian denominations and secular entities in complicated arrangements essentially unchanged for over 160 years, and some for much longer.

The main denominations sharing property over parts of the church are the Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Armenian Apostolic, and to a lesser degree the Coptic Orthodox, Syriac Orthodox, and Ethiopian Orthodox.

Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic have the lion share in Church ownership. Besides, almost all Holy Relics belong to the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church from the bodies, remains of all 13 Apostles, parts of original Cross, Nails, the Sign INRI, Crown of Thorns, Lance of Longinus, remains of Sts. Mark and Luke, Church Fathers, some of Christianity oldest Manuscript etc. Now tell which the true Christian Church out of 40,000 plus and still growing is true and fought for Holy Land 1000 yrs ago."
Church of the Holy Sepulchre -
    The site of Christ’s tomb

    DW Documentary

Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the holiest sites in the Christian world. Despite rules governing its shared use amongst different denominations, conflicts arise time and again.

Members of six Christian denominations — Greek Orthodox, Catholic, Armenian, Coptic, Syrian Orthodox and Ethiopian — live and pray in Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which was consecrated in 335 AD. There are different prayer times and precise divisions within the church. The authority known as the Power of the Keys is shared by two Muslim families. One keeps the ancient key, the other opens the gate. Time and again, there are disputes between different religious communities over the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, sometimes resulting in physical altercations. Armenian Father Samuel calls the church his home, saying he must "defend" it against the neighboring Greek Orthodox community. The film also features Coptic priest Antonius and Ethiopian Father Zion, between whose sects there is an ongoing conflict. Israeli police are responsible for security and respecting the fragile status quo between Christian groups, Muslims and the state of Israel, under the leadership of Christian police officer Johnny Kassabri. The film takes viewers behind the scenes of the church, showing the people for whom this place of worship has become home.

The more I've learned about ultra-orthodox communities, the less I trust them. My orthodox friend already crosses some lines when it comes to lack of compassion for 'outsiders'. I can only imagine those dynamics taken to the extreme.

Closed religious societies, be they LDS, orthodox or other, always end up with controlling, cult-like tendencies. And the women and children usually suffer.

Will also share this here ..

    An overview ...

Burnout: The truth about overwork and what we can do about it

    DW Documentary

Why do we work, and why are we working more than ever? Overwork is damaging our lives and the planet. This film takes a look at the past and also asks how we can change the future of work.

Why do we feel pressure to be busy, and where did this pressure come from? Some answers lie with the influences of the church, monarchies, 15th-16th Century colonialism and the effect of industrialization on modern-day consumerism and work ethics. Faced with the widespread problem of burnout, many modern companies respond with "mindfulness" in the workplace. Unions and the fight for labor justice are being replaced by therapies and office yoga. And yet, people who are unemployed are worse off than those with jobs — why?

Predictions that digitalization would make people’s work easier and that machines and artificial intelligence would replace us as workers don’t seem to add up. After all, the priority of automation is not to give people more freedom, but to make production more efficient and therefore increase profits.

So how can we free ourselves from the vicious cycle of overwork and consumerism, and learn to relax again?

Here is a good example of what happens when power dynamics within closed societies become distorted and perverted.

    Thumbs Up

A short but comprehensive historical closer look ...

Iran: History, Geography, Economy & Culture

    Geodiode

This is the story of Iran, once known as Persia. In this video, I explore the long history of Iran through to the controversial present, the diverse geography of Iran of deserts and mountains, the surprisingly complex Iranian Economy and the remarkably rich Iranian culture that has influenced the world in so many ways.

A history as old and rich as any, it has endured the battering of invasions and competing influences over millennia, to survive until the present day. This is the country that spawned the world’s first great empire, the Achaemenid Empire, and despite defeat at the hands of the Macedonian Greeks under Alexander, rose again under the Parthian Empire and Sassanid Empire. It was conquered by Muslim Arabs in the 7th Century AD, and over the next 200 years the original population that practiced the home-grown religion of Zoroastrianism was converted to Islam.

During the Golden Age of Islam it became a hotbed of artistic and scientific genius, and the Iranian language, Farsi, was beautiful written down by such poets as Ferdowsi in the epic piece of Persian Poetry, the Shahnameh (Book of Kings). In later centuries, Iran struggled on, maintaining its independence under the Safavids and The Qajar Dynasty, before coming under the influence of Russia and Great Britain in the Great Game of the 19th Century.

The discovery of Iranian Oil marked further influence by Western Powers, who later installed Shah Mohammed Reza ("The Shah"), whose rule turned corrupt and autocratic. He was finally deposed in the 1979 Iranian Revolution by Ayatollah Khomeini and the Islamic Republic of Iran was born. But this further continued troubles for the country, as it became internationally isolated over the Iran Nuclear Program and Iran's promise to destroy the State of Israel.

The geography of Iran comprises mostly mountains and deserts, and yet nonetheless houses a surprisingly large population of 80 million, who are mostly ethnic Persians with Azeris making up the largest minority.

Iranian culture has influenced the world with many words from the Persian language, Farsi, finding their way into English and other European languages. The games of chess and backgammon either emerged from, or were heavily shaped by Persia. And Persian carpets are regarded as the finest in the world, in a tradition that goes back millenia.

Spies, informants and new enemies -
    Today’s intelligence agencies

    DW Documentary

Intelligence agencies are influencing governments and spying on countries with no regard for the law. And they are able to remain nearly invisible, in the process. Are they the new superpowers?

The last time intelligence agencies commanded as much power as they do today was during the Cold War. Technological innovations mean that more sophisticated warfare is now a reality. It is not just about Russia and the USA anymore. We may be entering a new era of unrest.

The U.S. has lost more spies and informants since 2010 than at any other time since the Cold War. Leaders of German intelligence agencies also acknowledge that they have once again fallen upon tough times. Money, data and access are proving to be major factors in determining who actually wields power. The 2016 U.S. election made this clear: U.S. intelligence agencies are certain that Russian intelligence helped elect Donald Trump.

But the U.S. has lost old spheres of influence and allies are increasingly pursuing their own agendas. Can President Biden make his country a force for order in the world, again? And what does that mean for political hot spots and potential conflicts with China, Iran, and Russia? And for allies like Saudi Arabia and Turkey? Will Western intelligence agencies regain the power they once exerted? Wars fought with drone and hacker attacks, increasingly delegated power, and surveillance could push these conflicts to their tipping point.

The Fight To Take Back Hawaii

    ABC News In-depth

For over a century, the destiny of this island paradise has been in the hands of outsiders. Now native Hawaiians are reclaiming their culture, language and land.

“Hawaii is being sold to the global elite. It's not give and take. It’s just take, take, take, take.” Filmmaker Chris Kahunahana

“They took it away in three generations. We’re going to get it back in one. Whatever it takes.” Waterman Pomai Hoapili.

It’s a slice of paradise for some but behind the postcard façade, native Hawaiians have a different story to tell.

Theirs is a stuggle for land, language and culture, forcibly taken from them by the United States of America.

Housing prices in Hawaii were already sky high, but in the midst of the pandemic they exploded as mainland Americans bought up island boltholes. The housing crisis is hitting native Hawaiians hardest, forcing many out of their own homes. The state of Hawaii now has the third highest homeless rate in the USA.

This is one of many problems facing native locals who are fighting to ʻKeep Hawaii Hawaiian’.

Reporter Matt Davis visits the Hawaiian Islands to hear from the people fighting to keep their culture alive. In a visually stunning journey, Davis explores the lives of people on the frontline of this modern-day native Hawaiian rennaisance.

“Resistance is not only how we get our land back,” says school principal Kalehua Krug. “But it is also medicine – that resistance is how we heal.”

At his school on the island of Oahu, the curriculum focuses on redsicovering the modern story of Hawaii after the kingdom was overthrown in 1893. The students study the Hawaiian language, hula dancing and other cultural practices alongside the mainstream curriculum.

Davis takes a tour around the back streets of Waikiki with celebrated filmmaker Chris Kahunahana, the first native Hawaiian to direct a feature film.

“Hawaii was seen as Hollywood’s back drop. It served as a beautiful location for a Caucasian centred hero,” he tells Davis.

His movie Waikiki shows the darker side of these tropical islands – the reality for many native Hawaiians.

Davis visits the powerhouse community leader Twinkle Borge who has set up a permanent camp to provide shelter for Hawaiians who are sleeping rough. She reveals an extraordinary plan to reclaim land and build a village for her community.

And he goes out on the jet ski with waterman Pomai Hoapili in the middle of the worldʻs most famous surfing competition – the Pipeline Pro.

Between surfing on the North Shore and rescuing people caught in the giant waves, Pomai has enrolled in Hawaiian language classes. He practices speaking with his 10-year-old daughter, who’s also learning.

He says it’s urgent for native Hawaiians to practice their culture.

“Be Hawaiian, speak Hawaiian live Hawaiian…If we stop down the line, people stop talking about us, we disappear...we’ve got to keep practicing.”

In Hawaii to compete in the Pipeline surfing competition, the world’s most famous surfer Kelly Slater asks the world to pay respect.

“Everyone who comes Hawaiian should, should take care of this place and really respect the culture and the locals,” says Slater. “It's their home and it's your place to visit, but, you know, take care of it and look after it and ever one can enjoy it.”

Dancing, drugs and death - The excesses of Berlin’s club culture

    DW Documentary

Berlin is the unofficial nightlife capital of the world. This makes it a magnet for partygoers looking for hedonistic release. But that excitement sometimes ends in tragedy, as in the case of a young American woman who died of a drug overdose at Berghain, the city’s most iconic club.

Are recreational drugs tolerated within club culture? If so, what responsibility lies with the clubs themselves? What responsibility lies with police and policymakers? When Jenifer and Carlo manage to get into Berghain, they can hardly believe their luck. Like many in the club that night, the two young Americans take ecstasy. A few hours’ later, Jenifer dies from multiple organ failure.
Carla Röthig’s documentary centers on interviews with people at the heart of this party scene. Roman Shamov worked as a barkeeper at Berghain for many years and is shocked at the young woman’s death. He and other Berlin nightlife protagonists explore the fascination of the city’s club scene - and that of Berghain in particular.

Raimund Reintjes is spokesman for the Berlin Clubcommission, a mouthpiece for Berlin’s clubs and event organizers. Together with Olaf Schremm, head of the capital’s police narcotics squad, he explains the allure of Berlin’s nightlife and the challenges posed by the drug scene.

Why do people take drugs in the first place? What are the risks involved? Dr. Andrea Jungaberle is an emergency room doctor who’s dealt with a wide range of drug-related cases. The filmmaker also speaks to Rüdiger Schmolke from the Berlin drug prevention project SONAR. Can cases like the Berghain death be avoided in future? And could on-site drug testing programs be a way to make Berlin’s nightlife just a little bit safer?
