High Schoolers Awarded for Inventing Inexpensive Device That Generates Electricity From Sound

A team of high school students have developed an inexpensive device that can generate electricity from sound.

The eleventh grade students from the Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus (PSHS-WVC) say that the generator is like the opposite of a standard musical speaker; rather than using power to emit sound, the inside of the speaker is equipped with magnets and coils that generate electricity whenever they are hit by sound waves.

According to the Manila Bulletin, their “S-Light” invention only cost about $4 (P200 pesos), most of which was spent on capacitors.

The gadget typically only generates enough electricity to power a small light, but it could prove to be an invaluable source of energy and lighting for rural communities.

Additionally, the device’s technology can be scaled up to generate larger amounts of energy from noisy areas such as airport runways.

The five students and their invention were awarded the Silver Award for the 2019 Young Inventors Challenge. They now hope to use their education and technological experience to further develop the device and use it to help the Filipino people.

World first face transplant: meeting the man who wears 'my brother's face'

    8 Feb 2020

    20:47 mins

When Joshua Aversano was hit and killed in a car accident, his sister Rebekah and her family were asked an impossible question, to donate his face to save the life of another man. Incredibly, they said yes. As a result, Richard Norris is probably the greatest medical miracle in the world right now. His face, bones, teeth, tongue, skin and hair are another man's – they belong to Joshua. Richard is the recipient of the world's first full face transplant. On 60 Minutes, Richard, his family, and his new love tell their remarkable story to Allison Langdon. And after 3 years, Rebekah Aversano meets Richard – the man who now wears her brother’s face.

For those who don't understand that there is community in the big city, take a look at New York and their daily 7PM tribute to first responders and health care workers.

And there was a rainbow over the city at just that time after the storms went through.

There can be very strong community bonds in the big city, never forget.

New Mathematical Formula Unveiled to Prevent AI From Making Unethical Decisions

Researchers from the UK and Switzerland have found a mathematical means of helping regulators and business police Artificial Intelligence systems’ biases towards making unethical, and potentially very costly and damaging choices.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly deployed in commercial situations. Consider for example using AI to set prices of insurance products to be sold to a particular customer. There are legitimate reasons for setting different prices for different people, but it may also be more profitable to make certain decisions that end up hurting the company.

The AI has a vast number of potential strategies to choose from, but some are unethical and will incur not just moral cost but a significant potential penalty if regulators levy hefty fines or customers boycott you – or both.

That’s why these mathematicians and statisticians came together: to help business and regulators by creating a new “Unethical Optimization Principle” that would provide a simple formula to estimate the impact of AI decisions.

They have laid out the full details in a paper bearing the name “An unethical optimization principle”, published in Royal Society Open Science on Wednesday 1st July 2020.

I think this is good news...

Kidding aside, that looks like a really interesting article, DT.

Biologists have Found a Way to Regenerate Neurons in Mice with Parkinson’s Using CRISPR Gene Editing

Scientists have found a way to use CRISPR to create new neurons in mice with Parkinson’s disease—and the new method could also be used for other neurodegenerative diseases, offering hope of a cure or treatment for potentially millions of people.

Now, scientists from China and the U.S. have discovered that deleting the RNA-binding protein Ptbp-1 in a specific type of brain cell—glial cells called astrocytes—causes them to turn into useful neurons.

This year a Chinese study published in Cell was also able to achieve glial-neuronal conversion using CRISPR, this time turning Müller glial cells into retinal ganglion cells, and demonstrated an alleviation of associated symptoms.

The RNA-binding protein prevents astrocytes from becoming neurons, so using the CRISPR tool, they edited the genetics of the astrocyte RNA in mice before injecting the cells back into various parts of the brains. Three of four mice showed “significant restoration of dopamine release,” according to the corresponding paper published in Nature.

Furthermore, when testing mice aged 1 year, the equivalent of a 60-year old human there was a marked and aging-correlated reduction in the number of CRISPR-altered astrocytes that became neurons; as many as 60% in some cases.

“This mouse study is just the beginning,” Xiang-Dong Fu, a biologist at UC Berkeley, told South China Morning Post. “It’s the proof of a concept.”

Yes, but it has also very recently come to light that humans who've been subjected to CRISPR intervention are now all exhibiting very serious neurological defects.

A new way to purify water is being developed.

This is some pretty slick stuff from Chunlei Guo’s lab at the University of Rochester (N.Y.).

Published July 13 in Nature Sustainability, they took a simple piece of cheapo aluminum, and with some quick laser etching turned it into a super-wicking, super-light-absorbing, super-water-evaporating surface that provides easy water purification, using only light from the Sun. I mean, they hit the trifecta.

Guo’s lab started with some simple aluminum squares. Aluminum, of course, reflects sunlight very well, and it doesn’t wick up any water at all.

But then they etched the aluminum with femtosecond-length (that’s one quadrillionth of a second) bursts of laser light, actually with the same type of laser used in Lasik surgery.

But in this case they produced regular grooves in the aluminum, as well as tinier nanostructures inside the grooves.

Bar length, from left to right: 0.1 mm, 0.01 mm, and 0.0000002 mm.

These little grooves act like capillaries, with rough-surfaced insides, to wick up water really quickly. Here water gets pulled up the surface of a laser-treated aluminum square in a fraction of a second, against the force of gravity:

But the etching not only does that; it also turns silvery reflective aluminum into a jet-black super absorber of light. This new material absorbs photons from the entire solar spectrum, which means it heats up quite nicely when exposed to sunlight.

Then the crazy trifecta part is that this material, when water clings to it, actually alters the way the water molecules are attracted to each other. It enables water molecules to evaporate off the surface in groups rather than individually, the way they escape a normal body of water. So you don’t need to pull each and every water molecule apart to get them to evaporate, and that means you require less energy to get evaporation to happen from this surface than from conventional surfaces.

So then the idea is to place a chip like this into a clear container, set it up at whatever angle is best to capture sunlight, and suspend it in the water you need to purify. Then you collect the clean water as it comes off the chip and condenses on the container.

In practice, the researchers showed excellent purification of not only bacteria-laden water, as in the main diary image, but also removal of dyes and heavy metals, which are things that boiling will not get rid of.

Because it’s got an open-capillary structure, it’s easy to clean and doesn’t clog! Closed capillaries, by contrast, are nearly impossible to keep clear over time as they get stopped up with scale and particles.
