    Florence the Machine

Hurricane Florence is now cat 2, and will still be devastating. I'm on the west coast now, due to fly home tomorrow.

She's so big, the space station had to use a wide angle lens.

So far my flight hasn't been cancelled. I may just sneak in before Florence turns north towards Maryland.

Up until July 17 we were on course for the driest July on record. By the end of the month it was the wettest! These are supposed to be our dry months. Usually the only rain we get is from tropical storms. As of a couple weeks ago we'd already reached our yearly average rainfall. This will be a record wet year for us.

We have a stream that rarely goes over its banks. It's done so several times this year. It won't flood us, but it becomes a raging beast which would sweep you away if you fell in. It's normally only a foot deep in it's deep spots.

This will be Trump's second Katrina.

Regardless of whether or not Florence moves inland swiftly or stalls, dangerous surf conditions will extend as far to the north as Nova Scotia, as far to the south as the east-central Florida coast and the northeast-facing shoreline of the Bahamas and as far to the east as Bermuda. Few, if any, lifeguards are on duty to come to the rescue after Labor Day.

The rainfall forecast was for coastal North Carolina into far northeastern South Carolina to see 20 to 30 inches, with isolated areas of 40 inches. "This rainfall would produce catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding," the center warns.

Now it's Michael bearing down on Florida. It's still very intense close to shore. People there haven't seen such a hurricane in decades. It reached category four so high winds are expected.

Michael strengthened all the way to land and the eye persisted over land. It hit just shy of category five. The wind sheer didn't show up to break up the storm.

It's still Category three going over land. This image is from when it made landfall, it's further inland now.

Whew, I was watching that thing still intensifying as it moved in, and it was damn spooky. It reminded me of Andrew, and his kid sister Katrina. He came ashore right at a quaint little beach town called Mexico Beach, where my wife and I spent a nice beach holiday several years ago. Beautiful place with great fishing, or it was... I doubt the cottage we stayed in made it for instance.

I helped build big custom homes further down south in the St. Pete/Clearwater area of the Gulf Coast from the mid 80's through the late 2000's, most either near, or right on the beaches, and in general whether a structure lives or dies in a monster like this depends heavily on how and when they were built. In Florida anyway.

Florida radically upgraded their state building codes after the catastrophic damage from Andrew back in '92, a complete overhaul of how we used to do it, with an especially heavy focus on roof framing, and extensive tie downs from roof down to the foundation. I think the ones built after these changes were implemented will fare well, I personally would have ridden out a monster storm like this in any one of those that we built (after the changes that is), but the ones built before '92 are in deep ka ka...

THere's some footage coming out. Lot's of damage. And the Carolina's are going to get more rain from it. Not what they need.

My freshman college roommate was from Waycross. It's a town that borders Florida. I don't know if she's there now. No doubt she has family that is.

This storm chasing video shows entire neighborhoods obliterated in some clips. What I find interesting from a purely clinical point of view, is seeing nearby structures in those same clips totally intact, that would signify they were built after the new building codes were put in place.

My understanding is that Scott Walker really loosened those codes.

I was hearing that storm chasers said this was one of the worst hurricanes they've experienced anywhere.

Scott Walker is governor of Wisconsin, I take it you mean Rick Scott. Anyway, not according to this piece. Ranked #1.
