Just because someone filed a patent for it doesn't mean that it actually works, Bro. A patent only outlines a certain method of doing something, whether it works or not. Anyone can patent just about anything they can think of, as long as it hasn't been patented before by someone else.

The idea behind patents is that a patent gives you some legal protection in case somebody comes up with a contraption or idea that works exactly as the one you invented. So it's a bit similar to copyright, but whereas the copyright applies to literal works — a story; a name, a melody, and so on — a patent specifically describes a technical design.

All kinds of strange and bizarre things have been patented in the past. Otis Carr even patented his (supposedly) flying saucer, and he even obtained government subsidies for it. Of course, it was a sham and he was convicted for having conned the government out of money, but the patent was registered.

i've always been under the impression that a working prototype needed to exist (I think we've had this convo before). Because if not, I need to get busy doing up some patents. It takes resources to have a working model?

No, you do not need a working prototype. You only need a clear description — preferably with schematics — of how it's supposed to work.
