Facebook has suspended Donald Trump’s data operations team for misusing people’s personal information

    Source: THE VERGE

Cambridge Analytica played a key role in the 2016 presidential election campaign

Facebook said late Friday that it had suspended Strategic Communication Laboratories (SCL), along with its political data analytics firm, Cambridge Analytica, for violating its policies around data collection and retention. The companies, which ran data operations for Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential election campaign, are widely credited with helping Trump more effectively target voters on Facebook than his rival, Hillary Clinton. While the exact nature of their role remains somewhat mysterious, Facebook’s disclosure suggests that the company improperly obtained user data that could have given it an unfair advantage in reaching voters.

Facebook said it cannot determine whether or how the data in question could have been used in conjunction with election ad campaigns. Cambridge Analytica did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a blog post, Facebook deputy general counsel Paul Grewal laid out how SCL came into possession of the user data. In 2015, Aleksandr Kogan, a psychology professor at the University of Cambridge, created an app named “thisisyourdigitallife” that promised to predict aspects of users’ personalities. About 270,000 people downloaded it and logged in through Facebook, giving Kogan access to information about their city of residence, Facebook content they had liked, and information about their friends.

Kogan passed the data to SCL and a man named Christopher Wylie from a data harvesting firm known as Eunoia Technologies, in violation of Facebook rules that prevent app developers from giving away or selling users’ personal information. Facebook learned of the violation that year and removed his app from Facebook. It also asked Kogan and his associates to certify that they had destroyed the improperly collected data. Everyone said that they did.

Several days ago, we received reports that, contrary to the certifications we were given, not all data was deleted,” Grewal wrote. “We are moving aggressively to determine the accuracy of these claims. If true, this is another unacceptable violation of trust and the commitments they made. We are suspending SCL/Cambridge Analytica, Wylie and Kogan from Facebook, pending further information.”

The suspension is not permanent, a Facebook spokesman said. But the suspended users would need to take unspecified steps to certify that they would comply with Facebook’s terms of service.

The Trump campaign hired Cambridge Analytica in June 2016 to run its data operations. Separately, it had hired a digital marketing firm named Giles-Parscale to run its online advertising campaigns. Parscale designed the ads; Cambridge data helped Parscale to target voters. Sean Illing laid out the connection at Vox:

Kushner hired a man named Brad Parscale, a Texas-based digital expert who had worked previously for team Trump. According to Confessore and Hakim, Cambridge Analytica convinced Parscale (who has since agreed to be interviewed by the House Intelligence Committee) to “try out the firm.” The decision was reinforced by Trump’s campaign manager, Steve Bannon, who is also a former vice president of Cambridge Analytica.

It’s not clear to what extent Cambridge Analytica helped (Parscale denied that Cambridge was of any use in a recent 60 Minutes interview), but we do know that Trump’s digital operation was shockingly effective. Samuel Woolley, who heads the Computational Propaganda project at Oxford’s Internet Institute, found that a disproportionate amount of pro-Trump messaging was spread via automated bots and anti-Hillary propaganda. Trump’s bots, they reported at the time of the election, outnumbered Clinton’s five to one.

More and more glad I stopped using that social media network many years ago. Made some friends and family mad. Too bad.

You made a good choice Dreamtimer. I think this year is projected to be the year that Facebook has more dead than live people on its site.

As a follow-up to the original post, according to this article on Slashdot, a whistleblower named Christopher Wylie claims that Cambridge Analytica harvested some 50 million Facebook profiles of U.S. American voters — that's almost a quarter of all potential U.S. voters — in order to manipulate them into voting for The Donald™.

The Slashdot article has links to the original articles at The New York Times and The Guardian, so I'm not going to be duplicating those sources here.

Donk Donk on the head, you grup. (stop fantasizing about my implants, DKD )

I wonder how my page would fit into their algorithms (or whatever it's called)? I don't personally do anything on it, and mostly people will link to it or post pictures from a show or festival we were at. Maybe it's not such useful data. But there are a lot of families with children that I know. Facebook shouldn't be data mining me.

I'm not a cog on the warehouse floor to be swept away. I'm not a piece of data.

Do we see yet how little these very large but private, not the government, entities just don't care about us as people?

You know Zuck has to be a pretty vile sort to create a site where guys can rate the “hotness” of women using a Elo ratings system while occasionally throwing in the random animal as a comparison.

As far as dirty tricks are concerned, I WONDER if when Bernie Sanders candidacy was destroyed, wouldn't that have suited Trump too as IMO IF Sanders had been the Democratic candidate, he would have been a serious opponent? For ME he would have been a possible where as Clinton was a huge NO! I went for Jill Stein because the other choices were BOTH odious prospects. I did assume Clinton would win. Then I was really surprised Trump won.

I don't see how the propaganda CAUSED Trump to be elected but the idea that CA is actually running these elections is scary though NOT SURPRISING.

    Hummm. Hopes and fears unspoken....

Just days after Facebook suspended Cambridge Analytica for illegally harvesting data from 50 million profiles, executives from the firm have been caught on tape bragging about how they secretly ran campaigns in elections across the world—including Kenya’s 2013 and 2017 polls.

For over four months, an undercover reporter for the UK’s Channel 4 News posed as a fixer for a wealthy client hoping to get candidates elected in Sri Lanka, meeting with senior Cambridge Analytica officials in London. During the meetings, executives, among them CEO Alexander Nix, spoke about how the company operated, including offering bribes and entrapping public officials using sex workers.

During one of the meetings, the managing director of Cambridge Analytica’s political division, Mark Turnbull, speaks about the company’s role in Kenya’s elections. Turnbull boasts about working with president Uhuru Kenyatta’s campaign in the last two elections, helping provide research and targeted messaging. The company had previously acknowledged it worked for a “leading Kenyan political party” in 2013 to conduct and implement the largest political research project in East Africa, but refused to confirm or deny whether it had worked on Kenyatta’s campaign in 2017. https://qz.com/1233084/channel-4-new...tta-elections/

An investigation by Channel 4 News has revealed how Cambridge Analytica claims it ran ‘all’ of President Trump’s digital campaign - and may have broken election law. Executives were secretly filmed saying they leave ‘no paper trail’.

According to this article at CNBC, Facebook has now suspended another data analytics company for essentially doing the same thing as what Cambridge Analytica was doing.

I think it's also high time that people start looking into Google, which is probably the biggest private data collector in the world at this point.
