ahh Nietzsche...my dad gave me a book when I was a kid called from "Nietzsche to Hegel". What a card that Nietzsche! I guess he never heard of the UFC.

There is no pride in animalism. Animals while worthy in their own right are animals, we are homo sapiens sapiens...it's time for a better solution.

That's not to suggest that animals are less than homo sapiens sapiens. I would tend to believe that they are equal in their own creation. Both man and animal should strive to do best what it does best. The one caveat is that hss have a consciousness or at least the speculation is that it does, so man is required to 'reason' his way to right or wrong. Some seem to gravitate to the wrong choices.

Just for the record, the word "homo" has two meanings, because it is a word that exists in two different languages. The "homo" in "homo sapiens" is Latin and means "man". It lies at the etymological roots of several similar words in the modern derivatives of Latin, e.g.:

    • in French: "homme"
    • in Spanish: "hombre"
    • in Italian: "uomo"

However, next to the Latin word "homo", the word also exists in Greek, and there it has a completely different meaning. The Greek word "homo" means "the same", as in...:

    • homogenous
    • homonym
    • homosexual

That said and keeping the — ahem — bottom* word of that last triplet of bullet points in mind, I think we all know that there is indeed such a thing as a "homo homo sapiens", and then one of those two instances of "homo" will be Latin while the other one will be Greek. And the ancient Greeks sure knew all about being homo.

    * Seriously, the pun was unintended. But it's still funny.

P.S.: Speaking of bottoms, this reminds me of a funny pun once uttered by the unfortunately deceased British singer, songwriter and radio host Lynsey de Paul. Apart from having penned many songs for other artists that would become hits later and having had a couple of chart successes on her own account, she was also quite appreciated for her sultry looks and her sharp sense of humor.

At one point, she was nominated in a contest regarding what celebrity had the prettiest buttocks, and she won that award. When she went on stage to take reception of the award, she said to the microphone, "I thank you all from the heart of my bottom."

If her name doesn't mean anything to you, then maybe this video clip will. (Confession: I had a crush on her when I was about 9 years old. )

    And now...

She was only 24 or so in that video, and that was back in 1972. She died — of a brain hemorrhage, I believe — in 2004. She had never smoked, she didn't drink, she had never used drugs, and she had also never been married, although she had been in romantic relationships with some quite notable people, among whom Sean Connery and Warren Beatty.

She was a very special kind of woman.

People who perfect the art of being seen are called celebrities... there is nothing there except the skill of being seen....you have to become a spectacle. Sam vatkin has become known as an expert in narcissism (and he is famous for BEING a narcissist. Lately he has been saying that in his opinion narcissism is actually adaptive, a deep phenomenon for this present time. He considers that we have transitioned into a social construct where NOT being narcissistic is perhaps maladaptive ? In the following video he states the case starting at 35:34

    Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ0Qdle_uxg

This video is a discussion of reality making a transition from substance and essence to that of "spectacle". For instance to accept "the quantum observer" as the way we are structuring and organizing reality is narcissistic..... ???? They refer to Guy Debord. This is actually a very provocative conversation.

    Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHxI7eDHWVI

Guy Debord predicted our distracted society
    John Harris

The Society of the Spectacle offered in 1967 an eerily accurate portrait of our image-saturated, mediated times

"In societies where modern conditions of production prevail, all life presents as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Everything that was directly lived has moved away into a representation."

With echoes of the most rapier-like prose written by Marx and Engels (eg "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles"), so begins Guy Debord's The Society of the Spectacle, the treatise on the modern human condition he published in 1967. It quickly came to be seen as the set text of the Parisian événements of the following year, and has long since bled into the culture via no end of people, from the Sex Pistols to the Canadian troublemakers who call themselves Adbusters.

Its title alone is now used as shorthand for the image-saturated, comprehensively mediated way of life that defines all supposedly advanced cultures: relative to what Debord meant by it, the term usually ends up sounding banal, but the frequency with which it's used still speaks volumes about the power of his insights. Put another way, there are not many copyright-free monographs associated with arcane leftist sects that predicted where western societies would end up at 40 years' distance, but this one did exactly that.

The Society of the Spectacle maps out some aspects of the 21st century directly: not least, so-called celebrity culture and its portrayal of lives whose freedom and dazzle suggest almost the opposite of life as most of us actually live it. Try this: "As specialists of apparent life, stars serve as superficial objects that people can identify with in order to compensate for the fragmented productive specialisations that they actually live." The book's take on the driving-out of meaning from politics is also pretty much beyond question, as are its warnings about "purely spectacular rebellion" and the fact that at some unspecified point in the recent(ish) past, "dissatisfaction itself became a commodity" (so throw away that Che Guevara T-shirt, and quick).

But there are also very modern phenomena that fit its view of the world: when Debord writes about how "behind the masks of total choice, different forms of the same alienation confront each other", I now think of social media, and the white noise of most online life. All told, the book is full of sentences that describe something simple, but profound: the way that just about everything that we consume – and, if we're not careful, most of what we do – embodies a mixture of distraction and reinforcement that serves to reproduce the mode of society and economy that has taken the idea of the spectacle to an almost surreal extreme. Not that Debord ever used the word, but his ideas were essentially pointing to the basis of what we now know as neoliberalism.https://www.theguardian.com/commenti...iety-spectacle

I'm inclined to agree with that. And as a matter of fact, only two days ago and in another corner of the internet ─ i.e. on Usenet ─ I spoke about how for the last twenty years or so, I've been seeing a disturbing social trend develop here in real life, in which it is considered cool to be mean. The meaner and the more cynical you are, the more you are respected. This trend already existed in in the city where I went to school during my high school days, but back in the 1990s I also began noticing this trend among twenty- and thirty-somethings here in town.

But apparently it's not a local phenomenon, given that I have also been seeing it on Usenet for a couple of years now, and specifically in an international but primarily USA'n-populated discussion group ─ actually, two groups, but they're largely populated by the same people. There's a guy in there whose only purpose for residing in that group is to chide and insult the newbies. This guy is a US American, ex-Navy, and his political preferences are somewhere to the far right of the far right. Pardon my language, but he's got the American flag so far up his ass that the shit starts coming out of his mouth ─ or in this case, his keyboard. He's a textbook schoolyard bully.

And so whenever a newbie posts in that newsgroup and they happen to be posting by way of a newsreader for Microsoft Windows ─ it's a GNU/Linux newsgroup ─ he will throw in his "Bugger off, Win-droid" mantra. But the newbies are not the only ones he attacks. He'll also attack other regulars, and he will then often throw in the assumption that "they must be libtards" or that they voted for Hillary, even if the people he attacks aren't even US American. He also refers to Europeans as "Euro-commies".

Now here's the thing... When the guy starts attacking someone, others will often chime in with derogatory comments of their own toward the same victim, albeit not quite as harsh yet as the guy I just spoke of. And it's contagious too, because those same people will then often on their own account start posting sarcastic or cynical replies to posts from newbies, whereby they also jump to conclusions regarding the newbies' identity and motives. See, if they can label the newbie a troll and enough of them would agree that this is indeed the case, then that gives them a free pass for mobbing. And the underlying energy beneath all of that invective is narcissism. "Look at what a bad-ass I am. Ain't I cool?"

I strongly suspect that somebody poured a few barrels of vinegar into the gene pool a while ago.
