    Articulation

A thread for sharing various attempts at the often voiceless communication between people and cultures. Whether it be great intellectual messages, simple hand shakes, or messages of peace or something else.

First off I have been trying to remember the following person's name for a few hours or more and have managed to do so.

He is one of the artists who I feel visually and conceptually inspired by in the recent few years, in that he is making paintings that have components of an area I have wished to explore, and once I start painting again, I will likely be visiting this site again. :-)

Please feel welcome to post images or links to material that relates to this fairly broad subject.

Another website of interest which I found out about while listening to a recording of an interview with Graham Hancock.
The artwork of Alex Grey, the husband part of the couple involved with this 'institution', might be recognisable as the artist who features in a number of album covers and videos of the band, Tool.

I love the outrageous architecture of the 'chapel' they are creating, and if I didn't live at the other end of the earth would have already visited.

    The Remarkable Miss North

I saw a documentary of this incredible woman of 19th century and thought to share this here with you Nothing. She was a true pioneer for her time and I don't think a lot of people know about her.

    Marianne North (1830–1890)
Marianne North was an unmarried Victorian woman of comfortable means. Following the death of her father (in 1871) she set off on a series of trips to make a pictorial record of the tropical and exotic plants of the world.
She travelled to areas that the 'establishment' thought she shouldn't visit and it was this independence of spirit that made her journeys one of the most reported subjects in the British newspapers of the period.
North had no formal training in illustration but possessed a natural talent and was very prolific. Painting with a palette of bold colours, she sketched rapidly in pen and ink on heavy paper then used oils straight from the tube.
Unlike the tradition in Victorian flower painting, she liked to paint plants in their natural settings.

Thanks Elen, I hadn't heard of her. I am not a huge library of art history though, but I would imagine even if I were I would not have heard of Marianne North.
This is very interesting, I will have a look online for some images to investigate further. Thanks!
The story is most pleasing, such was the climate up until those times that it was frowned upon for women to be artists. There are many tales of wives of artists exhibiting under their husbands names and such work-arounds.

On the note of botanical art, an interesting fellow, also related to the era of Darwin, is Ernst Haeckel. The books of lithographs are charming and a great reference for design. Some of the images have been used in furniture, lampshades, sci-fi films, and tattoos.

    Nope, because then...

    • There would be a "Last edited by" line from the staff member in question; and
    • The staff member in question would have reported it in the mod room.

My guess is that you copied a different link into your clipboard from the one you thought you had copied.

I remembered about this set of time lapse recordings, some are pretty funny as they get wiped off for no apparent reason. It was actually the first time I had done marbling this way so the efficiency evolves. There's a video for about half of the number required for the job. They dry off slightly differently as can be seen in the photo.
I have posted this to share some of the excitement one involves themselves in while throwing paint around, almost like surfing I'd imagine.

Thanks so much for that! Seeing that photo for the first time in many years stopped me in my tracks - many, many years ago
when we were first married, we used to live just down the river from Kew, and every Sunday we'd go there for a walk and a
cuppa. It used to cost something like 5p in those days ...

The Marianne North gallery was one of our favourite haunts: to see the paintings was amazing, but to watch the reactions
of people coming through the door for the first time was priceless. It really is quite a body of work. The whole room glowed.
I've never seen the video - I'm looking forward to that
