Joe Rogan, in one of his interviews was talking about how hard it is to get into Canada to work. If you have a record, including DUI or DWI, they won't allow you in. I don't know how hardcore they are, but a lot of Americans talk about moving to Canada for various reasons, so, who knows.

Forget about working in Canada if you have any kind of record - you cannot enter the country if you want to take a vacation there. They will stop you at the border. You can apply for a temporary permit to enter but need to do that through immigration.

My understanding it is pretty well the same way also when Canadians are entering USA border...if you have a record for DWI, you are turned back too...can't even fly through never mind land for a plane change in the States if you have an inditeable offense on record, unless you get a pardon and or special permission.
