Not the happiest situation, but we actually remembered to record one of our "rescue calls"

Thanks, we do try our best and a lot of my spare time goes to this type of stuff; I'm trying to get back into making more videos on the stuff that we do. I learned how to weld so I can make the various items we need around the rescue; mostly gates, saddle and tack racks, cages for small animals (making a mongoose cage right now, we have 3 babies that we are hand raising) etc.

It's certainly been an educational experience (Learned that horses are psychologically very similar to dogs etc.. and apparently the inspiration for "wolverine" these things heal like crazy fast) and in such a small community we have gotten a ton of positive feed back (we work a lot with kids from the projects as they are the most common horse owner that needs our services down here).

I've gotten to get deep and dirty in abdominal surgery when we worked on a horse that had been stuck on barbwire all night and gutted himself (had to use a silicone mesh to hold his intestines in and some very creative "shoe lace" stitches to keep the shredded abdominal wall together) and counter intuitive things, like when castrating a horse, a torn wound heals far better than a cut (our emasculator basically "crushes" their testicals off, not cuts).

Plus the sociological aspect of dealing with the individuals surviving in extreme poverty, yet still with ego, pride and (often hidden deep) compassion and care. Oh and I'm an 15% minority as well as an "outsider", which is a whole new fun aspect as well.

Not gonna lie, a big part of my motivation is just that (and, that I can't talk about "doing" while not actually doing it... too many people already fill that role).

A big part of my participation on PA is due to this same type of motivation (there's a touch of my archetypes dark side in that, but at least i recognize it).

What happened to the horse in the video? Who are the owners? It's wonderful and heartbreaking at the same time.

Being a white minority must be interesting. Of course, it's not the same as being a black or colored minority, mostly because of the history of the caribbean. Your ancestors would have been the slavers and former masters.

You would be an outsider and maybe even feared, but I imagine not looked at as a useless kind of human.

It's very good then for you to be getting down and dirty and working with these people. Good for the rest of us whiteys who are quite often seen as disconnected from the 'real' world.

Aianawa, you were on a doomsday forum? Hilarious. You have such a positive outlook, did they all think you were nuts?

The damage was just cosmetic, the mother horse didn't loose her eye and her baby is doing fine (the biggest concern was the mother dropping weight while nursing due to pain) so it all ended well. Luckily horses heal insanely fast (you'll see in t he video how little bleeding there is when the chain is out of the wounds and pressure is released, a human would have had sheets of blood covering their face in the same situation) so fast that you have to handle wounds differently; we've dealt with situations where a horse has impaled itself on metal leaving a deep hole with a narrow opening, these are dangerous because the horse will heal so fast that the out side of the wound closes far faster than it should causing abscesses and potential a septic situation, so you have to keep the wound open and let it heal from the inside out.

I'll do a video on the baby we put it's intestines back in, and show the minimal scaring after healing... it's crazy, the horse had literally gutted itself on barbwire and now there's barely a scar.

I don't remember which one of the boys in the video owned her, but I'm pretty sure he was 14 or 15. It's pretty common down here that the parents of these kids won't even be aware that they are taking care of a horse.

I have a weird take on racism as I grew up in the pacific north west and never really saw it, I'm sure it exists; but I don't think "whitey" is the biggest (in a "per capita" sense) "hater" at this point in time.

I also think it's ridiculous to attribute other people's actions to people who have never done anything similar (which is kind of ironic, because I do feel that trepidation when dealing with certain subsets of Islam is justified). I don't have white guilt, I have "I'm tired of everyone with white guilt" disgruntlement.

Even here the "slave owner" resentment isn't really applied to individuals, the most friction I find is just being an "outsider", race doesn't matter for that prejudiced outlook and many black and Hispanic folks from the states are treated just like I am because they weren't "Bahn Heya". I would say there's far less racism (in either direction) here than in LA or Harlem due to the "outsider" zeitgeist. It's so bad that I've seen federal law violated to keep "outsiders" out, and "bahn heya" folks in; which naturally leads to rampant nepotism (since the motivation for both is very similar) which then leads to corruption (rules don't apply, why follow them ever?).

So the socioeconomic lessons I've had here have been quite fascinating. It's a very interesting culture.

I don't give much energy into racism, or even outsider-ism; we go in and out of the projects freely and with out fear, I think that attitude alone is both refreshing to their residents and "sets the right tone" for our interactions. Now that we've been a common sight for 3 years, I kind of forget the stigma placed on these places until I'm telling my "middle class friends" what and where we do/go at times.

We used to have a lot of the kids come back to our place from the projects and help out (really they were just wanting to ride horses &/or learn to ride better) when we weren't as busy (and some still come by from time to time) plus we assist with horse issues for free (that's how this video was made) and provide "at cost" horse medicine (we have a credit card, they don't, & the local places mark up is like 200%+) which I'm sure has all facilitated to us being accepted (plus we own very distinct vehicles, easy to remember).

Thanks, TargeT. And god bless the baby mongooses. (And I hope I didn't offend anyone w/the term 'whitey')

You won't be an outsider after a while. And that's a good thing. I've experienced being an outsider with very orthodox Jews who didn't even want to touch me or look me in the eye. And of course religion is a very big breeder of the outsider mentality. See recently posted video of Megan Phelps-Roper w/Joe Rogan.

I will go places that many in my family would never step foot in. Like up to the grocery store where it's 90% black. I can go down just a couple more miles more to where it's mostly white. For me it's six of one, a half dozen of the other. When I talked about it, my brother straight out said he'd always be going to the white neighborhood. I really believe he gets scared being around mostly black people. And that's really stupid, imo. But he lives in AZ, where there are very few blacks and the Mexicans speak a different language.

A friend of mine used to go to Hawaii for business frequently. He made a point of going to places the locals would go and got to know many. He was quite pleased when they told him that they no longer considered him a Hauli. (outsider)

Probably true, I don't let it bother me either way; luckily I'm an ENTP so I just crack a few jokes, complement or get them to talk about themselves and I've over come what ever trepidation there previously was.

I find it quite funny, the locals here will give you some attitude to see if you will push back; like they WANT a confrontation or expect it. Caribbean confrontations are very heated and often turn deadly violent as ego's clash and "honor" (ego really...) must be upheld, but when you do the opposite it totally disarms (those few that do this) them and is surprisingly easy to (at least on the surface) over come.

Comedy works with bullies, who are also ego driven. Makes sense to me.

I looked up ENTP and found this phrase: "...thriving on the process of shredding arguments and beliefs and letting the ribbons drift in the wind for all to see."

Devil's advocate, or Doubting Thomas. It's good to intersperse the humor to, hopefully, dispel tension as not all others relish taking arguments so far.

The horizontal word on my tatoo is Iconoclast, I think it sums ENTP up nicely
