That's because they've (ab)used Javascript to make it copy-protected, and modern browsers don't allow you to disable Javascript anymore. However, with the KDE Konqueror browser, I was able to switch off Javascript, so here's my best effort...

These days we are very fascinated by crystals and they connect certain crystal with a specific meaning, such as diamonds as a symbol for partnership or ‘healing’ gems. Were ancient people familiar with crystals and how did they viewed these transparent rocks? We can only imagine.

In the megalithic tombs of southwestern Spain was discovered a “remarkable set” of ‘crystal weapons’ found. Archaeologists have uncovered crystal arrowheads at the site of Valencina de la Concepcion.

An exquisite dagger blade, and cores used for creating the artifacts, that date to the 3rd millennium BCE were discovered in the area.

According to archaeologists, the Montelirio tholos which was excavated between 2007 and 2010, is “a great megalithic construction…which extends over 43.75 m in total”, constructed out of large slabs of slate.

Approximately 25 individuals were buried within the structure, along with “an extraordinary set of sumptuous grave goods…the most notable of which is an unspecified number of shrouds or clothes made of tens of thousands of perforated beads and decorated with amber beads”.

Moreover, a large number of crystal arrowheads were found together with the individuals. This may suggest that a ritual offering at an altar was performed.

Even though the arrowheads have the characteristic long lateral appendices of flint arrowheads from the area, investigators remarked that “even greater skill must have been required to produce these unique features when using rock crystal.”

Structure 10.042-10.049 is another large two-chambered megalithic construction made from slate slabs. Archaeologists found the body of a young male aged between 17 and 25 in the second chamber.

The male was found lying in the fetal position, along with a large set of grave goods. These included a set of 23 flint blades, an undecorated elephant tusk laid above the young man’s head, and numerous ivory objects.

Moreover, the body and the objects surrounding it had been sprayed with red pigment made from cinnabar. However, the “remarkable crystal dagger blade”was not found with these grave goods. Instead, it was found in the upper level of this chamber.

In the paper about this archaeological discovery it is written that: “The rock crystal dagger blade appeared in the upper level of Structure 10.049 of the PP4-Montelirio sector, in association with an ivory hilt and sheath, which renders it an exceptional object in Late Prehistoric Europe… The blade is 214 mm in length, a maximum of 59 mm in width and 13 mm thick. Its morphology is not unheard of in the Iberian Peninsula, although all the samples recorded thus far were made from flint and not rock crystal…

The manufacture of the rock crystal dagger blade must have been based on an accumulation of transmitted empirical knowledge and skill taken from the production of flint dagger blades as well from know-how of rock-crystal smaller foliaceous bifacial objects, such as Ontiveros and Montelirio arrowheads…

It was obtained from a large monocrystal at least 220 mm in length and 60 mm in width. Given that these single crystals are hexagonal, they would have a similar width along all their different axes.”

The rock crystal source that was used in creating the crystal weaponry has not been pinpointed exactly at this stage. However, analysis suggests two potential sources, and they are “both located several hundred km away from Valencina”.

Image 3– Objects studied in this paper. A: Ontiveros arrowheads; B: Montelirio tholos arrowheads; C: PP4-Montelirio dagger blade, D: Montelirio tholos core…

Researchers believe the motives behind the construction of these crystal objects must have been very specific. When it comes to the technical skill and difficulties involved in creating the objects from crystal, as well as their location of where these objects were found, they say:

“The more technically sophisticated items, however, were deposited in the larger megalithic structures…As such, it is reasonable to assume that although the raw material was relatively available throughout the community…only the kin groups, factions or individuals who were buried in megaliths were able to afford the added value that allowed the production of sophisticated objects such as arrow heads or dagger blades.

In this respect, however, it is important to note that, paradoxically, none of the most sophisticated artefacts studied in this paper can be ascribed to any particular individual: the rock crystal dagger from Structure 10.042-10.049 was found in the upper level of the main chamber (10.049) in which no human bones were identified; in Montelirio, neither the core nor the arrowheads can be ascribed to any on 20 individuals found in the main chamber; lastly, in the case of Ontiveros, the only available publication offers no evidence that the 16 arrow heads were associated to any particular individual.

It seems therefore reasonable to suggest that rock crystal may have had a dual significance for the Chalcolithic society of Valencina. On the one hand, it had a social significance due to the exoticism of the material and the fact that its transformation required very specific skills and probably some degree of technical specialisation.

These objects would have had a “surplus value” based on the exoticism and rarity of the raw material, the techno-economic investment of their manufacture (a know-how limited to very few people) and their use linked to the world of beliefs and funerary practices. They probably represent funerary paraphernalia only accessible to the elite of this time-period.

On the other hand, rock crystal must have had a symbolic significance as a raw material invested with special meanings and connotations.

The literature provides examples of societies in which rock crystal and quartz as raw materials symbolise vitality, magical powers and a connection with ancestors In her analysis of European Neolithic religion, Marija Gimbutas linked the ritual and votive use of white quartz nodules to a symbol of death and regeneration often associated with funerary spaces.

Quartz and rock crystal were even portrayed as rocks with great supernatural powers in European Christian tradition. In his Lapidarium, King Alfonso X the Wise of Castile (1276-1279 CE) emphasised its power to connect human beings with the spiritual world, as well as its ability to protect them from danger.”

Crystal implements have being found relatively frequently in burials of the 4th and 3rd millennia BCE.

However, it interesting that these crystal implements disappear from later funerary monuments in the Early Bronze Age ( which is the period from the beginning of the 2nd millennium BCE).

As researchers say, it’s a “truly striking” development, and as it would seem “the use of this raw material as grave goods was almost entirely abandoned”, although the reason still remains a mystery.

    Crystal Weapons Discovered In Tomb

Amazing Crystal Weapons Discovered Within 5,000-Year-Old Megalithic Tomb
    in Spain

Archaeologists in Spain have unearthed an extremely rare set of weapons, including a long dagger blade, twenty-five arrowheads and cores used for creating the artifacts, all made of crystal! The finding was made inside megalithic tombs dating to the 3 rd millennium BC in the southwest of Spain.

An excavation of megalithic tombs in Valencina de la Concepción in Spain led to the dramatic discovery of the rare relics, which experts described as exceptional and magnificently well-preserved. The objects are estimated to be over five thousand years old (dating back to at least 3000 BC). The Montelirio tholos, excavated between 2007 and 2010, is a great megalithic construction which extends nearly 44 meters (144 ft) in total, constructed out of large slabs of slate. At least 25 individuals were found within the structure. Analyses suggested that there was one male and numerous females who had drunk a poison substance. The remains of the women sit in a circle in a chamber adjacent to the bones believed to be of their chief.

    Incredible Crystal Arrowheads

They also found "an extraordinary set of sumptuous grave goods...the most notable of which is an unspecified number of shrouds or clothes made of tens of thousands of perforated beads and decorated with amber beads,” according to the study.

In addition to the human remains and textiles, the archaeologists found the large hoard of crystal arrowheads. The fact that they were discovered altogether indicates that they could have been a ritual offering at an altar. The arrowheads have the distinctive long lateral appendices of flint arrowheads from the region, but archaeologists noted that even greater skill must have been required to produce these unique features when using rock crystal.

Corpse of a Young Male Discovered in Second Structure

In a second structure, also constructed from slate slabs and dubbed 10.042-10.049, archaeologists discovered the corpse of a young individual estimated to have been between 17 and 25 years of age at the time of his death. The body was lying in a fetal position encircled by a large set of valuable objects. These included an elephant tusk laid above the young man’s head, a set of twenty-three flint blades, and several ivory artifacts. The rock crystal dagger blade appeared in the upper level of Structure 10.049 of the PP4-Montelirio sector, in association with an ivory hilt and sheath, which renders it an exceptional object in Late Prehistoric Europe… The blade is 214 mm in length, a maximum of 59 mm in width and 13 mm thick. Its morphology is not unheard of in the Iberian Peninsula, although all the samples recorded thus far were made from flint and not rock crystal.

    The crystal dagger blade.

Crystal Weapons Belonged to a Few Elite Individuals

After examining the finds closely, archaeologists observed that the weapons are almost of the same shape as the flint arrowheads that were pretty common in that region during that time. However, the fact that there are not any crystal mines near the area, implies that the skillful builders of the crystal weapons possibly traveled for many miles to find the material they needed for the construction of their weapons and tools. The shortage of crystal also suggests that these weapons were destined for a select group of people. The more technically sophisticated items, however, were deposited in the larger megalithic structures…As such, it is reasonable to assume that although the raw material was relatively available throughout the community…only the kin groups, factions or individuals who were buried in megaliths were able to afford the added value that allowed the production of sophisticated objects such as arrow heads or dagger blades.

In conclusion, the experts taking part in the study concerning rock crystal, confirmed Valencina's status as an exceptional location with a high concentration of exotic raw materials and rare products coming from all over Iberia.

I've merged skywizard's thread with Aianawa's original thread on this subject. Both threads were about the same archeological find, so we don't need to have two separate threads going about it.

Proof that humans have always sought "exclusivity"... I wonder if those crystal weapons belonged to the "Bankers" of that society.

There's probably some deep lesson to be learned here, not sure what that is though.

Not sure about these crystals but imo they could transfer and receive data/memory with crystals back in time.

I recall very clearly when I was a younger person - radios were actually called a 'Crystal Set.' My thoughts - on browsing this thread are wondering what else was discovered. Crystals are known for a variety of properties. I wonder whether the weaponry is just the 'tip of the iceberg' as they say ... hmmm ....

Perhaps there are other artefacts that accompany the weapons. I sense more to this particular 'discovery' than what is being shared ... just thinking out aloud ...

    Much Peace - Amanda
