Wasn't the secret with the Ori that they were not fully ascended but were hijacking the process? They were somehow making themselves the gateway to ascension but then just sucking energy out of those...
'Twasn't only the good guys, though. Anubis had also ascended, and the Ori were an ascended species as well.
