I saw a video of one of their most recent live concerts two days ago. The sound quality was awful, because it was filmed from all the way at the back of the concert hall, and with the built-in microphone of the camera. But there was one cover — an Alicia Keys song — that was sung by Kat Jade this time. Earlier it was sung by another female, but since the split-up between Con and Darren, that original singer has gone with Darren and his crew, so that very same song is now performed by Kat Jade — note: Kat is not the woman in the video above; that's Lesley Williams. Kat is the one who does all the Michael Jackson covers.
Despite the crappy sound quality of that concert video, that performance by Kat was nothing short of chilling. It still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. It's a multiple-octave song with many key changes, and the way that petite girl — she's the shortest one of the three — squeezed every last bit of passion out of her vocal chords, and then at the end of the song, rushed into the arms of her husband/boyfriend, that was really very intense. I almost had tears in my eyes, and I'm not kidding.
And what baffles me is that up until these people appeared on YouTube now about four years ago, nobody had ever even heard of these artists, all of whom are simply amazing. I can understand that the instrumentalists would have had careers earlier doing session work, but the vocalists? The three ladies — Pina Del Re, Kat Jade and Lesley Williams — are simply phenomenal, and the same is true for the other ladies from before the split, i.e. Sarah Lloyde and Nikki Heuskes.
And the male vocalists are just as impressive. Danny Lopresto is the guy who did the lead vocal on the George Michael song higher up, and Jordan Lennon did the backing vocals together with Pina in that song. I've seen them do "Under Pressure" (by Queen and David Bowie) together, and Danny can handle just about everything you throw at him, while Jordan excels in the higher registers and the falsettos. Danny's also an excellent guitarist — he's actually a heavy metal guy — and Jordan also plays percussion, plus that he's got his own studio, which is where many of the more recent videos were recorded. And then there's Dusty Stephenson, whose performance of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" was simply fantastic — he also did the male vocal on the Stevie Nicks & Tom Petty cover in the video of Lesley above.
And what's even more astonishing is that each of their videos was recorded live, with only three takes. Lesley wrote on YouTube that it's really literally like that: they arrive at the studio or whatever other venue where the video will be shot, the cameras start rolling, they do the three takes, and then they pick the best one. The whole thing is over in less than an hour, and then Dave Ross — the keyboard player — mixes the sound while the video guy picks the right shots, and then Con — the bass player and band leader — uploads it to YouTube. And yet the level of perfection and professionalism of these people is just incredible, and you can tell that they're all having a great time doing it.
Being a musician myself, I can only look up to these people in awe. :belief:
How this song has been playing in my head in the recent days all the time? I've not even heard it before!

Here's another one for our disco-loving brother Wind. I had heard this before, but it must not have been a great success when it was released, because I had already long forgotten all about it. Still, it's a goodie, and another demonstration of what set Chic apart from most other disco bands at the time. Their lyrics were good, and their arrangements — with violinists as part of their regular lineup — were always superb. :)
Noice! That of course is one of my many favorite Chic songs too.
This week's HSCC upload... ;)
