For all of his popularity, Tolle labored away in obscurity for many years, so not exactly a depraved money grubbing, applause junkie, imo. And Tolle definitely reworked a lot of his platitudes from work that was already out there, but that's hardly a red flag of a conman.
His criticism of Tolle, who is a gentle soul was vicious, like beating a hedgehog to death with a shovel. That was it for me. His take on David Fravor and other pilot's ufo sightings struck me as being completely blinkered. He is steeped in an outmoded scientific status quo. Plus, his 'humor' about the events is strange, like he did the entire thing for clicks. Not a good look.
I also get the strong sense that he has zero emotional empathy but plenty of cognitive empathy. His take on some of his subjects is insightful but also dry and dogmatic. In other words if you want Spock as a therapist, it might work. He is actually an excellent diagnostician, but one on one, I would find him hard to take. He helped me understand psychopathy, narcissism and other cluster b types, though. He excels at that.
