I'm seeing reports of a 7.1 which happened Friday evening. Near Ridgecrest.

The fault lines through Ridgecrest look really straight.
I might be headed out to Ridgecrest in a month or so, with some deep-earth-sensing equipment to look at precursors to quakes. Should provide 24 hours warning, maybe.. the theory is solid, and the electrokinetic (electricity/electromagnetics from seismic movement) monitoring is possible..
What is not possible at the moment is safe discharging of faults under tension. When they slip, the tendency is to be a dramatic jerk, inducing then jello-like jostling waves in the surroundings...
Only 5 km deep, what sort of quake I ponder.

They called it a strike-slip type of quake:
Two geological blocks were grinding against each other, side-by-side, as one moves (roughly speaking) horizontally in the opposite direction to the other.
That type of activity does release electro-kinetic energy that radiates upwards (and all around the contact locations. It is conjectured that sensitive people can pick this up as well as animals with their feet on the ground (feeling the electric charges or sensations).
This is a interesting effect: Loosely packed sediments shake more, and if they are wet, they can behave like a fluid.Quote:

The shallower the quake, the more shaking and the greater the damage it will cause if we happen to be in the way.

This has happened in Alaska too, where mostly a whole town disappeared as the ground liquefied. Saturated sand with water can be a dangerous combination when the ground shakes..
