Although much of Lady Gaga's work, especially on video or recording, leaves me unmoved, I know she is the real deal as a musician. A few years back I saw a video of her working on harmonies with her back-up singers. Not only can she sing really well, she was playing excellent piano during the rehearsal. Even the guitars she chose for herself and others, speaks to knowing "tone".

She is more like Aretha Franklin than Madonna when it comes to actual talent.

To watch what is going on here was fascinating for me. The smaller domestic cat would appear to be the original, or alpha cat. The ocelot is clearly the more physically dominant animal. This was a "war" of placement. When it was obvious to the domestic cat that it would be allowed to drink, the alpha designation was maintained. Almost immediately, the domestic showed kindness/friendship and offered the milk to the ocelot. The ocelot behaved in feral form deferring to the alpha animal. With a little coaxing, it looks like the ocelot accepted the offer.

Earlier this morning my neighbor and her boyfriend apparently came home
under the influence (s) and got into a physical altercation. She apparently
seriously assaulted him during an argument ... All's well though, he was
taken to the hospital and she well ... Talked her way out of being arrested ...

Watch the moon shadow the sun with an eclipse seen from space

"Get on board with the Solar Dynamics Observatory for a close look at a spectacular partial solar eclipse.

It's always an event when we can see a solar eclipse on Earth, but NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory gets a much better view of the sun from its vantage point in space. The SDO caught sight of a lovely partial solar eclipse on Sunday when the moon blocked out a good chunk of our closest star.

NASA posted a GIF of the action on Monday, noting "the shadow's edge is sharp and distinct, since the moon has no atmosphere which would distort sunlight." The lunar transit lasted for one hour.

There's slight shimmy to the sun in the animated image. NASA assures us the sun was not "spooked by this near-Halloween sight," but that the shaking comes from small adjustments in the SDO's guidance system triggered by the shadow covering part of the sun.

The SDO sees the sun in extreme ultraviolet light. The red colorization helps to translate the image into something human eyes can understand. It also simply looks cool to see the sun represented as a blazing ball of fire."

People from Melanesia, a region in the South Pacific encompassing Papua New Guinea and surrounding islands, may carry genetic evidence of a previously unknown extinct hominid species, Ryan Bohlender reported October 20 at the annual meeting of the American Society of Human Genetics. That species is probably not Neandertal or Denisovan, but a different, related hominid group, said Bohlender, a statistical geneticist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. “We’re missing a population or we’re misunderstanding something about the relationships,” he said ...

The comic book Sorcerer Surpreme comes to the big screen –
and his origin story is a psychedelic stunner !

What Robert Downey, Jr. is to Iron Man and Ryan Reynolds is to Deadpool – that's what Benedict Cumberbatch is to Doctor Strange. By that I mean, he's everything. The British actor, flashing an American accent eons away from the plummy tones of Sherlock or Hamlet, is the creative spark that ignites this bracing new entry in the Marvel cinematic universe. That's no knock on the movie itself, which director Scott Derrickson – the horror guy from Deliver Us from Evil, Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose – has kicked up a notch with a visual dazzle and wit unseen around these parts since The Matrix and Inception. See it in 3-D IMAX, people, and you're in for the hallucinatory headtrip of the year. And having Cumberbatch around really raises the bar on what's possible in comic-book fantasy.

Doctor Strange, the first in what looks to be a killer film franchise, is an origin story. And even if it feels carved out of the Marvel playbook of arrogant assholes who see the light (read Tony Stark), Cumberbatch plays it fresh, funny and fierce. His Stephen Strange is a neurosurgeon with miracle hands and a grand ambition to match his gargantuan ego; he won't even treat patients he thinks he can't cure. Rachel McAdams plays Christine Palmer, the ER doc who loves him, despite the fact that Strange thinks a romantic evening is inviting her to hear him deliver a lecture. Then, one dark night, Strange – texting while driving – crashes his Lamborghini Huracán, emerges with his hands mangled into useless digits and preps for a lifetime pity-party.

As the comic book, created in 1963 by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee points out, he finds salvation in the Eastern mysticism of Kathmandu, where he meets the Ancient One, played by Tilda Swinton in a role originally conceived as an Asian man. There have been protests, and there will be more, but Swinton – radiating otherworldly power – is a world-class mesmerizer. And cheers for the mystery Chiwetel Ejiofor brings to Mordo, one of the masters in the Ancient One's service. Just don't call it a cult. Strange does. Bad move.

Can our hero learn humility and the inner power to heal himself? Can he bend and fold time into shapes with an out-of-body wizardry his hands can no longer provide? You bet your ass. Cumberbatch, Swinton, and Ejiofer are not slumming at all here, and these top-of-the-line actors giving the blockbuster a riveting, resonant send-off, whooshed along by Michael Giacchino's propulsive score. Add Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius, the Ancient One's traitorous former disciple and Benedict Wong as Wong, the protector of the Ancient One's secret books. "What, just one name," asks Strange sarcastically. "Like Adele or Beyonce." Not like them at all, actually, something unique.

Doctor Strange is similarly unique, deviating just enough from the cookie-cutter Marvel pattern to become its own living, breathing, thrilling thing – wait until you see his Cloak of Levitation, his encounter with the Dark Dimension, and the fight scene on the streets of New York that melts into a kaleidoscope of melting images scary enough to haunt your nightmares. Through it all, there's Strange, a character that Cumberbatch catches in the fascinating act of inventing of himself as a new sorcerer supreme. Stick through the film's final credits and you'll see a bonus scene that suggests Strange inching into the world of the Avengers. But for right now, Doctor Strange creates its own world. And it's a badass beauty."

I would just eat out of the trash, sleep on the ground," a squatter named Dawn Louden told VICE News correspondent Michael Moynihan about life before squatting. "You do what you have to do to survive."

Las Vegas was hit harder by the 2007 economic downturn than most cities, and evicting squatters from previously foreclosed houses has become a priority for the Las Vegas Metro Police. "What we've typically seen is a direct correlation to a squatter house being the nucleus of crime for that neighborhood," Lt. Nick Farese said. The Crystal Serenity in August became the largest cruise liner to ever traverse the Northwest Passage. More than 1,700 passengers and crew toured the Canadian Arctic and visited Pond Inlet, disrupting the lifestyle of its local community, comprising about 1,300 residents.

"They're in our hunting zone. There's hardly any narwhales coming by," community health worker Ena Maktar said. "If the marine mammals are not there any more, that means we're going to have to travel further to go hunt for our food."

Since the 1980s, Northwest Passage transits have quadrupled. Increased rates of Arctic tourism are threatening the food security of local communities.

"Before the [outsiders] arrived, Inuit fended for themselves by using the animals." Pond Inlet elder Elijah Panikpakochoo told VICE News correspondent Arielle Duhaime-Ross. "We survived by ourselves."

Our analyses of the chronology and history opened a striking circumstance. Based on the applied by us mathematical methods it was proved, that the Scaligerian chronology, and therefore also the Scaligerian history of the "antiquity" and the Middle Ages, is totally wrong. Moreover, it appeared that our history right up to the end of the XVI century was consciously falsified at the epoch of the XVII-XVIII centuries.

I have read it too. There is so much flux of movement lately that it is hard to get a definitive reading on things. Probabilities are the best we can do and Schrodinger's Cat comes to mind. The Trump that entered the race may not be the same one today. His language has changed and I think it indicates a changed heart. I think he is almost over his head with the challenges he faces but, something in "The Force" feels different about him in the past two weeks. He might have made an inner decision he did not know he was going to make. He might not even be fully conscious about it. Just musing.

I am also hearing certain phrases differently that many but, not all. I tend to view the human body and its many organs and systems working together as the ideal template for us to follow on the Earth. When I hear Trump saying "make America" great again, it is not nationalism, per se, that my ears hear. I like to think of each nation as having a discreet but integrated part to play in the Earth body. What ever that role is, being great, or in full healthy integration, works for me.

Whether Trump "gets" that is another story but, I will add that thought form into the Noosphere with the intent for it to get some 'tread'.:wiz:

Just three weeks after commissioning the USS Zumwalt, the U.S. Navy has admitted it is canceling ammunition specially developed for the ship's high-tech gun systems because the rounds are too expensive. The guns, tailor made for the destroyer, will be unable to fire until the Navy chooses a cheaper replacement round.

The Zumwalt-class destroyers were conceived in the late 1990s as the first of a new generation of stealthy warships. The radar signature of the 610 foot long warship is that of a 50-foot fishing boat, making the Zumwalts great for getting in close to an enemy coastline and then using the 155-millimeter Advanced Gun Systems mounted on the front of the hull. The guns were designed to fire the advanced Long Range Land Attack Projectile, a GPS guided shell with a range of 60 miles.

The result would have been a destroyer that could rain shells down on enemy targets incredible accuracy, clearing a path for U.S. Marines as they advance inland. Alternately, they could strike targets such as terrorist training camps, military bases, and other static targets. The two Advanced Gun System howitzers are fed by a magazine containing 600 rounds of ammunition, making it capable destroying hundreds of targets at a rate of up to ten per minute ...

'Arrival' serves up alien invasion with brains

Los Angeles (AFP) - "Are we alone in the universe? It is a question that has preoccupied filmmakers since "A Trip to the Moon" announced itself as the world's first alien movie in 1902.

In the century or so following the 17-minute silent French film, Hollywood's extraterrestrials have visited in all shapes and sizes, from threatening tripods and genocidal lizards to benign humanoids.

While these films have traditionally been effects-laden potboilers, a subgenre of cerebral, lower budget movie has quietly insinuated itself into the mainstream.

Leading the charge this year is Canadian director Denis Villeneuve's "Arrival," which hits theaters on Friday following a Golden Lion nomination at the Venice Film Festival and tips for Oscar success.

Taking its cue from classics such as "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977) and "Contact" (1997), "Arrival" challenges the notion that alien visitation equals loud, expensive armageddon.

Villeneuve, the director of "Sicario" (2015) and next year's much-anticipated sequel to iconic sci-fi favorite "Blade Runner," does not stint on the spaceships and extraterrestrials.

But he uses them in the service of such weighty ontological and epistemological themes as the nature of space-time, how language and memory work, and what happens when you cannot communicate.

"There will always be trends in movies but I believe people are -- I don't want to say bored -- but less enamored by gigantic visual effects driven films," says "Arrival" producer Aaron Ryder.

"I also think that there may be, perhaps, a little bit of fatigue within the superhero genre. You wouldn't be able to tell by the box office but I think there is."

- 'Anti-Independence Day' -

Ryder may be thinking of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," which delighted the accountants at Warner Bros. earlier this year but was panned by the critics.

Amy Adams, one of the stars in the film, takes the lead role in "Arrival" as Louise Banks, a linguist enlisted by the army after alien pods pop up worldwide, to help figure out what their "heptapod" occupants want.

The global powers argue among themselves and a group of nations led by China decides that in order to save humanity they should blow these gentle, enormous creatures out of the sky.

It's up to Banks, a mother who has loved and lost, to put her life on the line by reaching out to the extraterrestrials.

The picture pairs Adams with fellow "American Hustle" star Jeremy Renner, playing against type as a shy, soft-spoken mathematician in a generous performance that allows his co-star space to shine.

Set in Montana, "Arrival" was filmed in Villeneuve's native Quebec for a reported $50 million -- a small budget for a leading sci-fi movie.

David Linde, a co-producer with Ryder and Dan Levine, said his team and the director set out from the start to make a film that felt "really distinct," despite the familiar genre.

"I'd like to believe certainly that people who perhaps just want to go to the movies on a Saturday afternoon and have popcorn are going to be really entertained," he said.

But he added that the emotional heart of the film ought to be particularly resonant in a year which has seen Brexit, a divisive US election and a resurgence of the Syrian refugee crisis.

"These are all serious issues and at their core if we could communicate better about them, with each other, I think probably they would feel less contentious and less scary," he said."

I searched for a map like this earlier today, and thought that the upper map might be the one I was looking for, but it turned out to be the map for 2012, with red representing Romney and blue representing Obama. I agree that there's a correlation between blue and crime. I also read somewhere that there is a correlation between blue and sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants. This map is a very important piece of data.

Sorry about the "map-thing", Myst. I thought I had found the 2016 model when I published the one I did.

The 'blue' areas remain predominantly the same from one to the other. The crime map overlays on either electoral map with a similar consequence.
